if part of the traditions/demands of my religion were to wear a veil/hat/etc I would probably fight agaisnt this ban as well.

yes the burka may look ridiculous and it may make the women stand out more, but no one bothers the orthodox jews for having the curly tendrils and the kippah, and no one bothers hindu women who wear the a sari/dhoti and have a bindi. to say that these women are traitors to their gender is totally out of line. these muslim women are standing up for their right to choose what they want to wear. they are taking away these womens' choices and it is incredibly intolerant.  i understand the security reasons behind banning the face veil, but i highly doubt that sarkozy gives two shits about women's rights. i would bet anything that sarkozy hates the veil simply because it is non-french and doesn't mesh with the french culture

a majority of europeans - not just sarkozy - are sick of islamist fanatics coming into middle and western europe and trying to impose their lifestyles, laws and barbaric social ideologies into their modern world. the ban of the burka is symbolic of that.

i'm not saying they do - but i'm just trying to explain to you why most europeans feel the way they do about it. the burka comes from societies where children will have their arms run over by cars by force for stealing a loaf of bread. where you can be put to death for not following islam. where you are raised to believe that anyone who doesn't believe what they do deserves to be killed. that is brainwashing and most of these women come from this kind of background.
