i think the government has the right to fine or even prohibit full-face veils in public places because in this modern society, you need to show your face for identification and such. besides, the full-face veil is a choice in islam, unlike the veil that only covers the hair and neck, which is a must for every woman after they reach the age of consent.

that being said, there are governments that even want to prohibit the normal hair-veils in public places and some already have done that (tunesia), and that is in my opinion fucking bullshit

Apart of the fact that full face veils are just as retarded as this decision by the french Government (since veils aren't even mentioned as a rule of clothing in the Quran and actually are a huge symbol of the suppression of muslim females by males and yet many muslim women refuse this -for some of them- helping hand of the western countries they live in, coming in form of a prohibition, because of the way they were raised and suppressed and sometimes actually think it's a way to express their pride for their religion, their loyalty to their husband/father and their freedom as a muslim woman), I think that everyone should have the right to dress himself like he or she wants.

Even if I wore a sombrero made of squirrel foreskin in public I shouldn't be punished or fined for that. it's a basic human right and I can dress however I want to...
I can understand that you can expect legal consequences if you run around on German streets in an SS Uniform but that's something completely different

On the other hand, if you live in a country with a different culture than the country of your origin or roots, you should fucking accept the culture of that country and not try establish your own one. If an American couple would move to Saudi Arabia -for whatever reason- the woman would have to wear a veil as well.
Of course, forcing someone to assimilate the country's culture isn't the right thing as well but immigrants should not fanatically try to keep up standarts and rules, common in their religions or countries of origin if it makes them completely different from their environment as full face veils in countries as France do.
As chicken said a full face veil's gonna conflict with some necessary identification processes which would be a more adequate reason than just saying "it could be a danger for our own traditions", therefore this law is rather ridiculous.

Fuck, I love long-ass embedded sentences!

Yet, this "I know better anyway because I believe in this religion" attitude is not the right one for a discussion. If people talk bullshit, correct them!

Quote from: chicken[...] the veil that only covers the hair and neck, which is a must for every woman after they reach the age of consent.
This is not said in the Quran.

Just returned from sports and I've made up my mind... I think I overacted a little.
We have plenty of muslims in Germany and barely any Muslim girl in my age or below even wears a normal a hair-veil. Some of the older Muslim women, such as those girls' mothers do, but only some. Even most of them abandoned this tradition.

For instance, there are a lot of housewives working together with me at my part time job and many of the people there are Turkish. One thing that I often notice when I talk to those who actually wear a hair-veil is, that they barely know any German. Those without a hair-veil seem to be much more integrated in society and I've had some great conversations with most of them during work.
From these experiences I have made my conclusion that moving away from those -nowadays in my opinion redundant- traditions is somehow improving people's way to better get along with their social environment. The reason for this could either be a lack of interest or a kind of suppression and in the past religion has been used a lot to supress certain groups and women definitely were one of them. I don't think this happens too often in high developed countries as the Netherlands, Germany or the US but I kow that there will always be people who abuse their religion for certain things and it happens anytime, everywhere and in every religion.

So Chicken, you aren't even a muslim yourself?

banning the burka has less to do with the garment itself and more with the overall negative impact the influx of islam has had on europe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlkxlzTZc48

billy

it has nothing to do with islam but if i want to wear a big pink suit of armor made of pillows i should damn well be allowed to wear it

rtil

you clearly don't understand the history of the burka at all, then

billy

i understand the history of the burka but i do not think that it's the government's job to ban self-demeaning practices
