This is an interesting documentary about ISIS. It's interesting how they seem so normal and used to all the violence, and it's even crazier how so many intelligent, bourgeois, and Western-educated people there are among them.

So basically they're the logical endgame of our occupation of Iraq, deliberate destabilization of Syria, and every other nefarious Christian military operation in the middle east dating back to the Crusades. Great going USA. Still, as the RayBan sporting, cellphone wielding denouement to the Islamic struggle against capitalist globalization, their jihad is of tragicomic flair, regardless if they succeed or not. That said, I do sympathize with their anger and found parts of this documentary pretty moving. Thanks for posting.

well erosion of the central power always entails the inception of a substitute that seeks to replace it

isis is neither new nor genuine

the mechanism of the iraqi revolution adheres to the same rigid rules every other one in history did

just like the french masses perceived louis xvi and the aristocracy as the culprits of the predicaments france had to face so arabs do in the christian/western invaders so in turn they have to find an ideology that would unite them and defy the oppressors

i think movements like xviii century liberalism/militant communism and militant islamism are akin to each other despite the formers belligerent atheism because of them emphasising egalitarianism and internationalism (spreading the red revolution, pan-sunnism)

I see how IS isn't new, and I agree with your points about the Red Terror and militant communism, but if western imperialism isn't the culprit of their predicament, then what is? An estimated 110,000 to 120,000 civilian deaths in Iraq alone sure convinces me.

It seems like jihadist organizations like IS are basically the dying breath of old world traditionalism and religion. It's like they're defending a culture and way of life that they know is just fucking gone with the wind. Do you think that's their problem? The erosion of the old world by so called capitalist advancement? Or are you speaking from a more economic standpoint (I think you said you were studying economics so that would make sense)?

It seems like jihadist organizations like IS are basically the dying breath of old world traditionalism and religion.

not necessarily

islamism we know today originated in  the  xix century

islam used to be a far more progressive religion than christianity and so were the arab societies in juxtaposition with western ones but thats another story

in the past terms such as nationality were vague and meaningless

rather than a pole i was merely the subject of the king of poland

following the conquest of the arab countries by europan powers/the ottomans the major factor that drove to unite the arab people against those who subjugated them was religion

nationalism we know in europe as in thausands years old NATION states are unknown to the arab people

the arab countries are untenable as they base on the legacy of various sultanates created in the past whose architects were the nobility. their citizens are probably devoid of patriotism because the contemporary arab world works exactly the same way, spearheaded by either intricate nomenklatura or ancient nobility that is still extant in countries such as saudi arabia or oman

hence the repudiation of them and the aim to create a pan sunni/pan arab caliphate which would probably be inherently more equitable and egalitarian

the way fox news talks so fervently about it i wouldn't be surprised, they talk about it like they're the #1 threat to america , the fear mongering effort is at an all time high. one of their anchors said something like "ISIS the first thing americans think of when they wake up in the morning"

icloud is one of the worst backup services, compound on the fact that its pay options get you less features and space for a higher price than other major competitors, it couldn't be a more typical apple product.

maybe this story will start to sway more of the general populace away from the myth that apple products are less prone to being hacked.

Worst Case Scenario: Society collapses in poor societies in about 10 years, in richer societies in about 15, and humans can't survive on earth in 20.

This is basically a bucket list with a time limit. Also probably should go in a dif thread but w/e.

On the topic of those leaked celebrity nudes, everyone seems to be (or seemed to have been) discussing the implications; that it was a breach of privacy, that it was theft, a sex crime, etc. No one was questioning whether we should even have celebrities in the first place, or talking about the dehumanizing effects of the public eye, because that would require, you know, actual critical thinking and examining of the status quo. Like, I mean it's the internet. If people just wanted to see iliac crests, they could find far more attractive ones elsewhere.

most of the news outlets crying foul over the leaks are hypocrites anyway. they're just mad because the leakers didn't give them exclusive access to the images first but instead leaked it for free so the gossip bloggers couldn't squeeze it for all it's worth. not only that but they're the ones who generate that kind of celebrity culture with the paparazzi and wanton invasion of celebrities' private lives in almost every other facet, but suddenly when they're not the ones doing it it's bad. they're more scum than those hackers will ever be. at least the hackers gave apple a reality check.

you do know that the exploitation of those areas in africa were condoned by the then ruling monarchs of said areas?
Yeah but you can't just (literally and metaphorically) carve up a continent for resources and expect the "countries" there to have solid infrastructure 150 years later.

omgod slavery was 1,000,000 years ago why cant blacks get over anything it's been like 1000 billion years jesus christ like 100000000000000000000000000000000000 years omg nobody else asks for handouts after 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years get over it

You do realize the biggest exporter of slaves were African kingdoms right? One big perpetrator was the kingdom of Dahomey, a shining star of African civilization, go ahead, look it up. Also I do believe since the people directly affected are long dead (And since slavery 95% of the time in north America was actually a decent life and not the shitfest it's painted as in northern schools") that yes, complaining that you or your ancestors were slaves is nothing more than a "GIB MONEY" thing. Thats like me complaining that the turks, who fucking destroyed my country and raped and pillaged it it for 500 hundred years need to make reparations to me or should I have a conversation with a turk should feel like shit for being turkish when I bring up my nationality. But I don't, and my people don't, because it's in the past.

If you do want a demographic of people to talk about that should get some right to complain or have affirmative action, look to the native americans in central and southern america who got fucking shitwreckt by the Spaniards.

Regardless of your or anyone's stance on reparations, you act as though once slavery was abolished, former slaves were suddenly regarded as first class citizens. I think you know that wasn't the case.

Also the thread ate the original post you were quoting so that's interesting.

In other news (I haven't really been keeping up with it) but I think this whole #GamerGate fiasco does really well to highlight the inanity of social media activism. Not only does nothing actually change, but the truly important issues are homogenized and assimilated into the same discursive platform as frivolous ones, to the point where people actually have to argue that Ferguson is more important than videogame journalism (not a swipe at zwimmy). This is a problem with the internet at large but I think it speaks to more general problems with Globalism. People tend not to care until the proverbial glacial melt is at their doorstep. It's hard to imagine a Sioux chief shouting "Stop talking about buffalo! Louis XIV was just beheaded!"

And I should have specified "once slavery was abolished in the US," because its modern equivalent still takes place in sweatshops and child labored mines across the world every day for our (consumers of technology's) benefit.

iirc that's what they've been doing as of late, they're more focused on spreading the message of #gamergate and #notyourshield, trying to combat the journalists trying to spin the truth rather than giving youtube personalities and attention whores the time of day

any time i've seen quinn mentioned in these threads people respond with "who?"

quinn is no stranger to /v/ though, and has responded by changing her twitter name to 'zoe "who?" quinn'

but wasn't the whole point of #gamergate to bring attention to zoe quinn and the whole five guys thing? what's the point of the hashtag now? fighting corrupt journalism? if it is i just think it's silly because it was never not corrupt and it was also never journalism. i guess new gaming journalism sites should rise up in their places, but honestly i don't know if there's really a need for them. gamers are incapable of having civil discourse.

Oh come now, that would be too easy...
After all, things like this don't just go away if you ignore them. In fact I'm sure they would feed from the lack of traffic and viewership they got.
By casting more attention to it by calling out/exposing and exercising one's rights to speech by weighing one's own opinion on it, the problem gets dealt with directly and won't end up on TV or some other medium gaining more exposure.

gamergate was a response to the media sources reporting on the situation trying to cover up the original point of quinn abusing her connections, flipping the blame onto the gamers with the red herring of misogyny and anti-feminism for not accepting this person simply because she is a woman.

I don't know about Soup, but I've already voted Yes. British politics is really stupid, but basically Scotland gets all its money as pocket change from Westminster, in England. Scotland is far stronger and far more resourceful than it's given credit for. However, the press have been 100% biased against it, and the same mantra of 'too wee, too poor, and too stupid' is what every single one of the papers have been saying. There was a huge debate on that all the schools in Scotland were sent to, and they didn't televise ANYONE saying that they were voting yes.

The three main political parties (Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrats)* need Scotland for their own reasons. The Conservatives/Liberal Democrats are in government at the moment and need Scotland to stay with them due to the financial power that it brings to the table. Labour, however, have an ulterior motive for keeping the union: They are almost assured never to get back into power if just England are voting. Northern England almost always votes Conservative, and so does the south, and the middle-england counties that tend to sway either way will never vote enough for Labour. Scotland, however, ever since the late 1970's/early 1980's has always had a strong Labour vote.

But now? Labour is trying to fit all their eggs in one basket, they're no longer the working man's party, and trying to please the elitist north/south England has meant that disaffected Labour voters are now voting SNP - Scottish nationalist party, not like the Nazis of the same way, at all, don't worry. The SNP aren't against immigration, they aren't racist, and are extremely socialist, but they have one main thing that they want: Independence from the corruption that plagues Westminster.

Another major reason for voting Yes is that people don't want to be associated with the growing UKIP/BNP (UK independence party/ British National Party) who are rapidly gaining popularity in England. Those two parties are full of racist, homophobic, misogynistic, dinosaurs that frankly don't even deserve to breathe let alone to sit in parliament. They have NO support whatsoever in Scotland, but in England, their anti-immigration policies have won them quite a few seats.

#VOTEYES

Also 99% of the things reported by the BBC are completely bullshit and/or things from 2006. They used pictures from a Muse concert in Finland, saying 'a gathering of No Voters in Glasgow'. FUCKING STUPID.

*Conservatives are like your Republicans, and Labour are a party that used to be socialist, but now are more in the middle, and Liberal Democrats are ineffectual, but are sort of right-wing/centred.

Thanks for typing all that out. It's pretty much the same here except our Labour equivalent died as a recognized party with McCarthyism and now we're mostly bipartisan with some fringes on either extreme.

When I was in Edinburgh a few months ago a policeman was giving me directions and I asked him what he thought of Scottish independence and he was like "Well I'm not really supposed to say... but I'm 100% for it." It was the same with everyone else I talked to so I figured the support would be pretty strong, but I guess in hindsight most of them were pretty young so my sample was a bit skewed.

Good luck with the tally.

Also that Russell Brand video was pretty informative thanks zwimmy.

That's exactly what I was saying. We used to have a recognized socialist presence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Party_of_America) in the US but it died with the second Red Scare. I would never delineate our liberals as falling anywhere other than center right.

And no haha, we live to the big mostly left of that, we're in the council of Argyll and Bute, which were a strong 60/40 No to Yes ratio, sadly. Most people here voted no due to there being the nuclear weapons base (Trident), and if we were to become independent all the jobs there were said to be lost by the scaremongering No campaign.

No point complaining though, next time we'll have our independence. Next time, for definite.

i read that scottish economy is shit despite sizable oil reservoirs etc cuz they all belong to natively english companies but i cant place my bet on that since ive never really immersed myself in the subject

as regards socialist party thooooooooooough

i recall reading about it yes

still even if it hadnt been for the red scare and the party would be extant now i dont think theyd have much validity anyway. the us is unequivocally a two party state with influence fluctuating but lets pretend all of a sudden there was a surge of support for socialists and the party would be elevated to the position of the party with MOST seats in the parliament etc. countries where there are 3+ parties generally rely on coalitions rather than one party rule because otherwise they wouldnt be able to forge any of their policies should they be a "minority" government. even if socialists won they wouldnt get more than 50% and theyd probably face virulent opposition inside the congress from both democrats and republicans i wouldnt be surprised if those two boycotted them effectively foiling any attempts to create a solid government. some people would lose tooooooo much money if guys like this were to rule. i surmise the reaction of most christian/traditionalist inclined societies would be equally aggressive anyway so red scare was pretty much a preemptive AND inevitable move it just goes by the rule better sooner than later i suppose

dundee's art and design community is ancient, including game design and development (DMA design aka Rockstar North haha) and a huge focus is normally on topical and contextual design work

i spoke to lecturers and peers far my senior, the inexperienced students fresh out of school like me are very much in the minority here

i'd love to see a breakdown of the vote demographic besides yes/no, like age group, political alignment, etc.

On the BBC they've released a couple of figures. Apparently before the postal votes, it was 50/50, but the Old age pensioners swung it round by a huge amount. Literally almost EVERY postal vote was for No (and there was around half a million of them)

Generally, 16-18 year olds are roughly 50/50 between no and yes.
18-25 year olds are in slight favour of Yes.
25-40 year olds are in slight favour of No.
40-55 year olds are categorically Yes (probably due to them being around for the 1979 referendum, which only didn't go through due to lack of turnout iirc)
55+ are categorically No, presumably over fear of losing their pensions and the like. Completely understandable.

Does anyone know the latest on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict?

Also dang crackers that sounds rough. We have similarly stark rural/urban voting divides in the states.

Also yeah michaell I agree with everything you're saying (regarding our socialist party, I have no opinion about Scotland aside feeling bad for our friends who voted yes).

Also what do you guys think about this supposed SJW changing of the guard on 4chan? Apparently a lot of people are migrating to 8chan so I wonder how long that will last. moot did compare #GamerGate to Project Chanology which I thought was fairly apt but even so we really need our Snacks back more than ever right now.

It's fucked, Moot is dating a pr rep for Gawker media, who has exerted her feminine wiles to get moot to kick all the old mods and bring in new SJW minded ones.
Over the past week 4chan went nuclear, with an explosion of "he does it for free" shitposting that started on /sp/ which quickly exploded over into /v/ and /pol/. Those boards are now dead, crushed under the weight of the censors. You can be banned for saying nigger or an offensive word, for mentioning GamerGate, or saying anything about the censoring.

Yeah I saw the screencapped posts from the supposed ex-/d/ mod.

I haven't browsed /v/ much recently but I guess something like this has been a long time coming. I haven't liked all the changes moot has made to the site recently to make it more streamlined and web 2.0-user accessible (namely delayed pruning, getting rid of the email field, invisible sage, not being able to delete your own threads, etc. But I thought all the 4chanX emulation was unnecessary too so maybe I'm overly conservative). Honestly the only thing that's kept me on certain boards has been the community, so I'm sad to see another sizable split for the first time in five or six years.

I honestly blame all the people involved in the July 4th raids more than I do the administration. It's not 2007 anymore and gorespamming tumblr was a really childish thing to do. A "friendly takeover" would have been much funnier and effective, but I guess that wouldn't have aligned with their ED ideals. 4chan and the internet in general were much more playful and harmless before ED so yeah I guess I blame them in the end.

But most of all I blame the Jews.

people will make the games they want to make and if they're dedicated nobody can stop them. gamers can whine about them but it won't ever change the fact that they exist

From my understanding, lamers weren't whining about the games themselves, but rather people who don't actually care about games subverting established norms in the name of spreading their SJ agenda (i.e. treating the symptom and not the cause), and people trying to "intellectualize" the medium by making primitive visual novels and art games, which then get undue praise by pseudo-intellectual journalists who also don't actually care about games.

But maybe that's what you meant.

it was more of how related media outlets and everyone involved with quinn handling criticism and scrutiny in the absolute worst way possible

yeah i get the cronyism part, but a lot of people are acting like this is the end of an era and the gaming industry is somehow dead as a result of all of this just because some noteworthy developers have decided to take a side. like nobody will make a game full of female tropes anymore because they'll be afraid of/taught a lesson by the twitter SJW bully brigade, and all games will now focus exclusively on appeasing their demands. the problem is that a majority of the gamers rallying behind the hashtag have absolutely zero understanding of how the industry works and why none of this bullshit matters. Kotaku and the gamer blog network has zero influence on the industry, Zoe Quinn is not a game developer, and social justice has no market value in games.

All the Canadian tabloids I'm reading about it sound exactly like Tom Clancy novels.

Quote from: Toronto Sun
The gunman stormed his way into Parliament Hill where Conservative and NDP MPs had just begun their respective weekly caucus meetings. The Prime Minister himself was in the building as well. There could be no better prize for a terrorist intent on making a terrifying impact.

The brazen gunman certainly managed to evoke a scene never before witnessed in this nation's 147-year history: A wild firefight erupted in the seat of Canada's government between the shooter and the guards bent on stopping him. In a chilling video recorded by a Globe and Mail reporter, the exchange of bullets could be heard echoing through the beautiful marble hallway of Centre Block.

"Will always remember the sound. Parliament will never be the same," tweeted NDP MP Ryan Cleary.

As the smell of gunpowder filled the air, frightened MPs barricaded themselves behind doors reinforced with furniture. "Shots fired during caucus meeting. at least 30 shots. MPs piled out. I'm safe with 2 colleagues but we're still at risk...," tweeted MP Tony Clement. "PM was in Caucus but now secure. Assuming it's not safe to venture out yet."

During the hail of gunfire that rang through the main Hall of Honour, one parliamentary guard was shot in the leg and another was grazed by a bullet. In all, three people were treated in hospital and released.

It's terrifying to think how high the body count may have been if not for the courage of Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers. The former Mountie is being widely praised as a hero after he shot and killed Zehaf-Bibeau just outside the parliamentary library before he managed to reach the MPs. "He was in his office and went out to deal with it," MP Julian Fantino told the Sun's Joe Warmington. "He is definitely a hero and there are a bunch of heroes here today."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was rushed out of Parliament to a secure location. A photo of him being briefed by security officials was released to the media to quell public fears he may have been injured in the terror attack.

While he was safe, his staff received an e-mail ordering them to remain in their offices and take cover under their desks. "There are currently active shooters in the Parliament Hill vicinity," they were warned.

Fear and panic filled the capital as authorities couldn't determine the number of accomplices still on the loose. The Rideau Centre mall, the U.S. embassy and other downtown buildings went into lockdown as rumours spread that at least one other gunman was still at large. Residents were warned to stay away from the area and if they were in the vicinity, they were to stay away from windows and not tweet police locations as the hunt continued for an "active shooter."

By evening, though, no other suspect had been apprehended.

More, though, was being learned about the dead gunman. Zehaf Bibeau had a long criminal history including convictions in Montreal and Vancouver. Wearing a black and white kiffeyeh similar to the one described by witnesses, his photo appeared on an #ISIS Twitter account, poised for battle.

Was he inspired by his fellow jihadist just a few days before?

This was the second attack on the Canadian military in three days — on Monday, extremist Martin Rouleau ran down one soldier and injured another in Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que. before he was shot dead. The radical convert had been under watch by the RCMP and had his passport seized when he tried to fly to Turkey this past summer to join ISIS — just as Zehaf Bibeau's travel documents had been revoked.

And they are just two of an estimated 90 potential terrorists in our midst.

It's not as if we had not been warned. Just last month, Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney tabled his report "2014 Public Report On The Terrorist Threat To Canada" and warned "Terrorism remains the leading threat to Canada's national security."

How prophetic those words now ring in Ottawa.

No one really paid much heed. On Oct. 8, NBC News reported that Canadian officials had thwarted an ISIS-inspired plot to carry out a "knife and gun" attack at a "public place" in Canada. It seemed the stuff of over-reacting Americans. Terrorism doesn't happen here.

It was admittedly alarming when two intelligence agencies told Parliament two weeks ago about their increasing concerns about radicalized jihadists. But still, they had assured us there was no imminent threat. How wrong they would be.

CSIS director Michel Coulombe told a Commons committee that they know of at least 80 violent radicals who have returned here after being involved in terrorism overseas.

"By the time I leave this room, it's going to change," he warned. "Are there some that we are not aware of? Probably. I don't want to speculate."

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson told the same committee that they had 90 Canadians under investigation for suspected terrorist leanings — and we've now learned that Rouleau and Zehaf-Bibeau were among them.

Known to the government, and yet nothing could stop them.

Last Friday, just days before the Quebec attack, the domestic terrorism threat level in Canada was quietly raised from low to medium for the first time in four years. Intelligence agencies had picked up increased "chatter" from radical Islamist groups about possible attacks after Canada announced this month that it was joining the battle against Islamic State fighters who have taken over parts of Iraq and Syria.

Despite this warning, two fatal attacks on Canadian soldiers have now followed. It proves the startling and terrifying truth we now must face — no matter how vigilant we may be, it will be incredibly difficult to protect ourselves from the radicals hidden among our own countrymen.

Now an innocent man's blood stains the granite Cenotaph, spilled not by a foreign enemy, but by an enemy within.

the lack of violence is from the troglodytification of the polish people due to all the sweet sweet kvass :^)
on a serious note though more violence in the u.s. is done with melee weapons or fists than with guns, and even with gun violence, a large percent of that is from illegal firearms not carried by responsible citizens.

They're focusing on creating a "safe space" for the wrong victims here. A lot of the discussions over the assaults see liberals and feminists trying to generalize the problem when it's pretty fucking clear where its coming from in this case. The two cultures are irreconcilable.
