I don't know about Soup, but I've already voted Yes. British politics is really stupid, but basically Scotland gets all its money as pocket change from Westminster, in England. Scotland is far stronger and far more resourceful than it's given credit for. However, the press have been 100% biased against it, and the same mantra of 'too wee, too poor, and too stupid' is what every single one of the papers have been saying. There was a huge debate on that all the schools in Scotland were sent to, and they didn't televise ANYONE saying that they were voting yes.

The three main political parties (Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrats)* need Scotland for their own reasons. The Conservatives/Liberal Democrats are in government at the moment and need Scotland to stay with them due to the financial power that it brings to the table. Labour, however, have an ulterior motive for keeping the union: They are almost assured never to get back into power if just England are voting. Northern England almost always votes Conservative, and so does the south, and the middle-england counties that tend to sway either way will never vote enough for Labour. Scotland, however, ever since the late 1970's/early 1980's has always had a strong Labour vote.

But now? Labour is trying to fit all their eggs in one basket, they're no longer the working man's party, and trying to please the elitist north/south England has meant that disaffected Labour voters are now voting SNP - Scottish nationalist party, not like the Nazis of the same way, at all, don't worry. The SNP aren't against immigration, they aren't racist, and are extremely socialist, but they have one main thing that they want: Independence from the corruption that plagues Westminster.

Another major reason for voting Yes is that people don't want to be associated with the growing UKIP/BNP (UK independence party/ British National Party) who are rapidly gaining popularity in England. Those two parties are full of racist, homophobic, misogynistic, dinosaurs that frankly don't even deserve to breathe let alone to sit in parliament. They have NO support whatsoever in Scotland, but in England, their anti-immigration policies have won them quite a few seats.

Also 99% of the things reported by the BBC are completely bullshit and/or things from 2006. They used pictures from a Muse concert in Finland, saying 'a gathering of No Voters in Glasgow'. FUCKING STUPID.

i've only learned about this situation over the last couple of days, but based on what i've learned if i was voting i'd also vote yes. any temporary inconvenience it might cause doesn't outweigh the long-term benefits

Thanks for typing all that out. It's pretty much the same here except our Labour equivalent died as a recognized party with McCarthyism and now we're mostly bipartisan with some fringes on either extreme.

When I was in Edinburgh a few months ago a policeman was giving me directions and I asked him what he thought of Scottish independence and he was like "Well I'm not really supposed to say... but I'm 100% for it." It was the same with everyone else I talked to so I figured the support would be pretty strong, but I guess in hindsight most of them were pretty young so my sample was a bit skewed.

Good luck with the tally.

you cant compare labor with democrats or any other mainstream party in the usa

what you consider left wing in the us would be ascribed the term 'centre right' in europe at least when it comes to economic policies, social garbage like gay marriages etc is a different story though

That's exactly what I was saying. We used to have a recognized socialist presence in the US but it died with the second Red Scare. I would never delineate our liberals as falling anywhere other than center right.

Also maybe you or someone could give reasons for being against Scottish independence, though I have trouble figuring why anyone living outside the UK would care.
