one thing i think you could improve on quite a bit is the head. particularly noses, eyes, and the chin region - really the facial structure in general. you tend to default to the L-shaped nose from any and every angle, the eyes look a bit floaty, and you always draw the chin's undercarriage in an awkward way even if we should be seing the point instead. some resources to consider:

::huggles!!::

Thanks! It's the different angles that get me the most, so I definitely appreciate the references!

yeah there are some very challenging angles of the head. it's not easy. have fun!

SO I HEARD THAT THE ANIMATORS AT DISNEY MAKE THEIR INTERNS DRAW 100 HANDS TO BUFF THEIR SKILLS. TRUE OR NOT, I SUCK AT DRAWING HANDS, SO I DECIDED TO DO THE "100 HANDS CHALLENGE" TO STUDY.

6-7 hours total for 50 hands. Referenced photographs and my own hands (especially the right hand 'cause I'm a lefty), tried figuring out the basic shapes and proportions this time around 'cause I HIGHLY doubt I'm good enough to use those gesture sites (yet), battled through pointy fingers and yaoi hands. I STARTED GOING INSANE AROUND HAND #30 AND MY FACEBOOK BUDDIES SAW ME LOSE MY SANITY THE MORE HANDS I DREW.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 100 SKULLS CHALLENGE AFTER THIS HAHAHAHAHA NOOOOO PLEASE NOOOOOOO--::sobs:: /after i get a better sense of form

some of these are really great! there's some good motion here. and it wouldn't surprise me if that were true - at art school we were tasked of drawing hundreds of the same thing many times. practice makes perfect, and you have to do it wrong hundreds of times before you start doing it right.

Hnilmik

My 100 hand challenge continues.

These are hands #051 - 080.

Some pairs of hands I count as 1 to make up for the badly drawn hands I did, hahaha... ha... Half of these I drew while out and about with friends of mine~ WAY messier than my first batch of hands since... I'm still trying to get the hang of drawing fast, and from living, breathing, ever-moving people. I thought I'd be going insane the more I drew again, but it actually became peaceful the more I went and I'm paying more attention to hands now~

Some folks liked the clean-ness of my lines / line economy and gave me feedback to focus more on motion / (line of) action. I... Had no idea how to do that for hands, but I tried my best, so hopefully I did! Aaannddd I'm happy that I'm SLOWLY understanding perspective/foreshortening because the various different angles are forcing me to try drawing them.

Oh! Here's something I know that IS true, based on sitting in at animation panels with industry professionals from Disney, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Fox, and so on... From what I know, they like seeing characters interacting with props/objects, scenery, and other characters in portfolios. Yeah, I drew some hands interacting with objects last time, but my good friend Jii-Jii also featured hands interacting with other hands and ledges and stuff ... So I took her lead!

Hnilmik

I finished my 100 hand challenge! I even drew more hands because I could!

To sum things up, 5-ish days to draw roughly 100 hands + extra hands to make up for the really derpy ones. Along the way, I even got to practice perspective/foreshortening, and even a little shading/lighting! I learned a lot while doing this, even though I think I have more to learn, but I feel mighty accomplished~ I even think I probably DO have the patience to do FBF animation, if I really stuck with it! Probably!

xD NOW. TO CATCH UP ON OTHER WORK I OWE BEFORE EMBARKING ON ANOTHER ART CHALLENGE.

I drew a bunch of tribal designs while in high school, often as gifts for friends. I was proud enough to show them to a tattoo artist friend of mine in college. She said the lines were icky. Fast forward 2 years and I realized that she was right—They WERE icky. I said I'd clean them up someday. That someday never came because I too was busy.

Add 2 more years-ish. Decided to play with the pen tool and experiment with a Photoshop tutorial I found.

Well, at least the lines look a tad cleaner.

Oh man, I drew this in MAY!

Since I practically NEVER practice coloring, I decided to do so.

I learned a lot of do's and don'ts. Sooooo many don'ts...

%T I need to quit being lazy in Photoshop. I think that's the main reason why I forgot to maximize the sketch a tad, then redraw it at a larger size and carry on from there...

Oh my god, those hands are amazing, very well done and inspiring *w* I should draw more hands now..

Hnilmik

Thankoo~ I'm trying to set aside some time later to try drawing 100 heads/faces/bodies next, especially heads/faces after I get a better understanding of what Loomis is trying to get me to comprehend!

Forgetting how to draw my characters continues! Or rather, I'm fighting an art block by doodling redesigns, especially for characters with appearances that work against the story they're in.

For this character in particular... She wasn't born a cat person and in her society, people who turn into animals aren't welcome. In fact, they're often killed, a la "werewolves, werepeople, etc.", because the moment they're fully turned, they're practically feral/wild/homicidal beasts. So, she has to hide the fact that she's turning, and yet, she's not one to hide. At least, not in fear, anyways. In terms of how rich/what kind of lifestyle she lives, she definitely would be in the "poor, but gets by" category.

As a character, visually, I want her to look androgynous, at least in the face (her previous design had a bare midriff and a flat-ish chest) and be built like she could run/climb/punch things with relative ease (athletic and NOT like a stick, like her previous design). Initially, she didn't have cat ears, instead had goggles, and even had feathers. Too bad the goggles were a bit of a pain for me to draw, the feathers were confusing and detracted from the design, and I can make excuses that she just flattens or tucks away her ears into her hair.

Her previous design(s) had gigantic robo arms too, primarily because at some point, her arms needed to be replaced, and through "magical means". The problem was, not only did her cyberpunk look work against the other characters in the world, it even worked against the more magical folk who gave her her new arms—As "advanced" as the magic folk are, they aren't QUITE cyberpunk. So, giant robo arms got scrapped.

New Problem 1: Her arms STILL need to be replaced and "patched up", but odds are they'll be from other magical means.

New Problem 2: ...She used to have a unique-ish silhouette because of her big arms/hands. Either she'll be wearing gloves, or her hands get TIGER!big when occasion calls.

Ah well. Hopefully I'll have another "visual development" session with my pallys some time~ Maybe when I get back to working on improving my fundamental skills (I DO SEE THE ICKY ANATOMY, ESPECIALLY THE HEAD), I might do another "LOOK AT HOW MUCH THIS CHARACTER CHANGED!1!!" meme along the way.

space stuff is fun to make in ps. looks good

Like a lot of my characters, I drew her first, then made up their story... As I went along. But when I actually wrote the entire first draft of her story, SHE. KEPT. DOING THINGS. DIFFERENTLY. FROM HOW SHE WAS DESIGNED. So since then, there were a lot of tweaks and even throwing her entire design out the window to have her better match what she says, does, and how she behaves throughout her journey.

Man, I miss drawing her crazy and wacky poses. Oh her skull~
