i've been trying to make the calves smaller i really don't think they're that far off from reality. i do tend to make them larger if that makes them gross then so be it

what kind of pencils do you use? try to draw from left to right to keep the side of your hand from smudging the paper

  Usually though I'll smear it over for a more shaded look and then clean up whatever's left, but whiteboards...

This might not really count coming from a girl but I think the way he draws the legs/hips is way more fun and attractive to look at than a 'skinnier' counterpart. It's not really drawn in a fat way either, it's more of a pudge, or a curvier way, while still being totally average... if that makes sense.

Well I normally use H or 2H pencils whenever I can, and then go back over it with an HB. Doesn't smudge much whenever I leave it alone with the light outlines, but I should try the left-to-right method more often. Either that, or cover the side of my hand with scratch paper or whatever.

try using 2B and 3B. you're only going to get a certain level of darkness with HB. anything lower than 2B, at least for me, doesn't give me a good looking dark line. they have this sort of waxy look to them that i can't stand

I smudge a lot but it's been pounded into my brain to work strictly general to specific and I can't really grow an image from one part. There must be an armature for me so I know that the image looks like.

try sketching a very light silhouette of what you're going to draw first before you do it then . at some point you want to be able to create things from your head. little pose dolls can only do so much for you
