the beginning of a series of north korean paintings. this one is about children in the NK army. in the NK army, medals are passed down through the family. so if your father fought in the Korean War, you would get all his medals when you start out in the military. some kids even have more medals than this

Interesting theme.

Ever seen the "A State of Mind" documentary? I'm curious if you're gonna try something related to the Mass Games.

by armature I meant the sketch skeleton to grow details off of. I hardly use my mannequin.

yea, and the mass games are really cool. the 3rd painting i have planned is about the mass games, more specifically the giant pictures with the people with color cards.

this one reflects on the propaganda machine that NK injects at a very young age. anti-american history and cartoons for the young ones, violent too. even though conscription age is 17, children are still taught at a young age to be ready to fight and kill for their country.

The uniforms totally make me think of the personality cult they have going on there

#3: mass games

"HELP"

North Korea - the last standing remnant of communism in the cold war era.

the most prevalent visual icon of their dedication to their Juche socialist movement is the Mass Games, a yearly event held at the Kim Il-Sung Stadium.

comprised of over 80,000 gymnasts, athletes, dancers and card-turners, the Mass Games are a sight to behold, where performers synchronized by the tens of thousands pay tribute to Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong Il, and all comrades in a literal display of the principals of communism where the masses unify to embody one.

thousands of dancers wave, spin and turn on the field, while on the opposite side of the stadium, every seat is filled with a card-turner. from afar it gives the illusion of a "human jumbotron", where each person is a synchronized color given by signals to make moving pictures the height of ten-story buildings.

preparation for this event takes months. many children are part of this event. most schooltime is set aside for practicing for the mass games, making sure every element is perfect, to honor the kim family and to show off the fabricated power and glory of north korea to the world.

while things like the mass games are practiced in other places of the world, there is nothing quite like this event in north korea in scale, beauty and perfection. if you have never seen it before, please take a look at these videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg4h2sl-zFU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76aOdbaR_io http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1A47IoR1t8

and there are many more examples in the related videos.

all the spectacles aside, the mass games are nothing but a veil over the desolate state of the country.

after the mass games, many of these children will go back to lives of starvation absolute poverty and periodic electricity if any at all. they are deemed by the government as "expendable", as the country's poor population continues to dwindle while its hypocritical leadership further isolates itself and purposely harms its people.

the few tourists who are allowed to enter north korea typically are let in for these mass events games. in this picture, one card-turner girl simply holds up a card that says "help" in korean. the next time she may see decent food and shelter could be months from now on kim jong il's birthday.

isn't cuba still communist too?
btw i like this picture alot. its very haunting

cuba calls itself socialist
north korea calls itself communist
but in reality it's just a dictatorship
they simply idealize communism

MarcK

I like your korean paintings so far. How many of them do you plan on doing and what brought on your doing them?

Hnilmik

I really like the color card piece. It really gets the message across without being a crazy-busy picture, especially with how the girl is looking over her card book. I even figured that "HELP" was written there before reading the description. I have to agree about how haunting it is too.

North Korea's Taepodong-II is an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads. It was first tested successfuly in 2006, and again in 2009 to launch a satellite into space.

Despite pressure from its allies and promises of backlash from detractors against the 2009 test, it went ahead anyway.

While shortly after the launch the North Korean government issued a statement saying the satellite deployment was a success and that the satellite was broadcasting North Korean songs from space to earth, it was clear to other nations that the satellite was simply not there. it is widely accepted that the missile failed to reach orbit and its payload fell into the pacific ocean.

because of the criticism of the launch from many nations, North Korea threatened to pull out of six-country talks of nuclear disarmament and vowed it would continue its nuclear program.

while deemed a "nuclear power" of the world, it has yet to be seen if north korea actually harbors any nuclear weapons. there is one functioning north korean nuclear reactor, which was originally going to be dismantled completely in return for aid.

like many leaders of small nations, Kim Jong Il believes it is his country's right to defend itself and develop nuclear technology and weapons. the United States - a nation with nearly ten thousand nuclear warheads - disagrees.

here Kim Jong Il hugs a taepodong-II missile on a mountain watching the sunset. in many north korean propaganda paintings, Kim Jong Il and his father are often portrayed on the tops of mountains ( http://static.guim.co.uk/Guardian/world/ga...276056-4751.jpg , http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bGSc2xyuxvs/SiCQ...il_painting.jpg , http://pyongyang-painters.com/editor/uploads/Pic%201_1.jpg , http://evilmonito.com/wp-content/uploads/2...kin-410x230.jpg ). North Korean legend says that Kim Jong Il was born on Mount Baekdu - the iconic mountain of North Korea.

Soviet records indicate he was born in a small fishing village in the USSR a year later.

I really enjoy these history lessons. Thank you for expanding my mind rtil!
