piper sketch that i will probably colour but don't really know what i'm doing (http://www.thebackalleys.com/dump/files/2093/110lS9_piperprogress.jpg).

that redm doodle (http://i.imgur.com/hcXSz.jpg).

first (http://www.thebackalleys.com/dump/files/2093/874Lb5_page%201.jpg) and second (http://www.thebackalleys.com/dump/files/2093/232o2E_page%202.jpg) pages of a random comic, just playing around

also first attempt (http://www.thebackalleys.com/dump/files/2093/6245mH_page%201.jpg) at screentoning a page. it didn't turn out so well.

oh and i guess i might as well post this (http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ln79dpIgLe1qeodmso1_500.jpg) too. i don't really like it all that much but it was the first thing i did digitally and the only thing i did solely with my tablet.
i put pretty much all the drawings here in links 'cause i didn't want to have a massive first post.
coloring and inking a sketch you like without losing the sketch's charm can be really difficult. it will take a while to find your 'groove' in ps , what brushes give you a comfortable feeling. just keep practicing and experimenting and it will come to you over time.

I like what you've done so far, so I think you should stick with that.
Maybe only add as much detail as you need to get the point across
As you go on with your comic, maybe make some changes here to show some development as you will no doubt improve over time, seeing what works and what doesn't
As dilly said, I like your style

Don't worry about being messy with posts
Productivity should take top shelf in primary goals imo so keep up the good stuff

Hey, we're pretty similar!
I'm in the midst of planning a comic, and I asked myself the style question, too.
I came to the conclusion, that the simpler I can make it, the better. It's good to be able to crank out comics quickly, and not be  unmotivated to work  on it, because it takes too much effort.
Impressionist art was so popular, because it was accessible. People didn't need to be artists in order to understand it.
So, I say simple is the way to go. There's really no need for all the extra detail, the people who read aren't going to notice half the time anyway, they want the story. Story and updates.
Just look at Nedroid. (http://nedroid.com)

Anyway, I'm curious about toning, can anybody help me out with that?
I'm most inspired by THISSSS. (http://www.johnnywander.com/)

I'd really appreciate the help. Sorry to come asking on your show-thread, haha.

honestly, i just went out and looked it up.  this (http://psychobob.xepher.net/screentonez/) is the first thing that comes up when you search 'screentones'.

more than anything, i'd love to be able to do something like this (http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/112/5/9/Scott_Pilgrim_Tones_and_BGs_by_Inkmo.jpg) in the future. i think the tones that artist used are really awesome. i think part of it is actually that I just am really inexperienced and part is that i don't know where to go about finding a whole lot of tones. this should improve with time, like most things.

this is exactly what i wanted to hear, haha. i just really want to get better. drawing is the only thing i actually really like to do and i already planned to practice like crazy during my last year of high school.

okay so apparently i can't spoiler the images for some reason so get ready for some REALLY big images

so i got accepted to the school i wanted to go to today, and atomickomix asked to see my portfolio so i thought i might as well scan most of it. none of it's anything amazing though, it's all just mostly stuff they asked me to draw for them, so i wouldn't really use it as an example of an acceptable portfolio. anyway most of the pictures look like crap when scanned, (this is actually true) so sorry about that.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FY9m9o.jpg&hash=58d82a786f95b4ab2683569334d13d4dfdd13bea) simple object from 3 points of view

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FELjIy.jpg&hash=37791fe8c12a321a953d9d0edd2049c31e7ca40b) crappy little comic page. i was supposed to show a character entering a building and interacting with another character, but most of my transitions are pretty abrupt. it also looks like a flashback in that one panel.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FtWJNs.jpg&hash=5f9dc87b5c5602516945c8c78563e3abe2a00867) hand

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F0vcxX.jpg&hash=93fab9849b7a2637a6182eec3482604cd86c7755) and this sketchbook page. also haha i just noticed lenko's character is in there.

i also happened upon a really old comic of mine that i only drew like a page and a half of when i was 7 or so, but i thought it was pretty funny so i scanned that too.

i havent heard of this game until now. i like the challenging angle you picked, but i'm not so much a fan of the soft shading and blurry lines you drew on the buildings. i think a more cel shaded approach would have workd better here. but the girl is cute

i actually agree wtih both of these things. originally i did the shading differently but thought it looked off so i just blurred it. :/ in the future i definitely want to get around to actually painting instead of just throwing shadows on top of things.

as for the buildings it was kind of a copout 'cause i just coloured over the sketch and never drew the lines.

for her back arm it looks like you ran out of canvas space. i would add some more width so you have more breathing room. i think the arm is getting there but it looks like her shoulder is missing. i think if you color this piece it may make the depth a little more convincing.

as for the front arm, i can see the first half of the arm working, but the forearm feels too small. you may want to work on another layer until you nail this part cuz it looks like you're having to erase around everything to continue editing it and that can be a real chore that you have no reason to burden yourself with in digital art.

a solution i see would be to push the elbow much further to the right, allowing you to extend the arm without having to move the hand.

for her back arm it looks like you ran out of canvas space. i would add some more width so you have more breathing room. i think the arm is getting there but it looks like her shoulder is missing. i think if you color this piece it may make the depth a little more convincing.

didn't even know i could change the canvas size during until now

Quote from: rtil on April 17, 2012 10:33 PM
as for the front arm, i can see the first half of the arm working, but the forearm feels too small. you may want to work on another layer until you nail this part cuz it looks like you're having to erase around everything to continue editing it and that can be a real chore that you have no reason to burden yourself with in digital art.

i actually am working on another layer it just doesn't look that way 'cause i erased some stuff so you could see what i'm doing better

Quote from: rtil on April 17, 2012 10:33 PM
a solution i see would be to push the elbow much further to the right, allowing you to extend the arm without having to move the hand.

good idea.

thanks again for the advice, i appreciate it.

i work very large because i used to work very small and by the time i would finish a drawing i would realize that the resolution is terrible. also just incase i ever want to add any smaller details without them looking bad. maybe i'm just comfortable with huge right now. if it begins to be a problem i'll probably try other stuff.

you might not wanna make the lineart so light than the color, or things start to fade away. what you sohould try is colorizing your lineart by locking transparency on the lineart layer and going back after you have colored and paint over your lines with a slightly darker version of the colors beneath it. i like to use a soft brush for this so i can do some blending and ambient stuff. then sometimes i will merge the lines and color and paint over it where line isnt needed anymore
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on April 25, 2012 03:26 PM
i'll definitely try to mess around with that too but i also realized i forgot to readjust the opacity on the lines.

seems like you enjoy the more earthy colors. watch out for colors being too close to eachother, like the sky and the cliff in the moonlight shot. you'd probably want a little more contrast there, and not so much influence of color from the night ambience
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on April 27, 2012 05:02 AM
tbh i don't really like the colours i was playing around with that much. it just came out that way. i was just kind of messing with the brush tool which i don't really know that well. my favourite picture that i coloured is the potions one which i did with the marker tool but that took me way too long and way too many layers. i'm getting more used to drawing digitally but painting is like learning to draw all over again for me.

i just need to play around a lot more before i can find a way to paint and get the colours i like. the artist in my sig is pretty close to my ideal painting style but i have no idea how to go about painting like that properly. i love his work but i feel like i'll never be that good. then again a few years ago i thought i would never be able to draw lilith from borderlands. i don't think i have a great eye for painting yet either. i'm kind of a mess when it comes to it and i think i'm just really gonna have to do a lot of trial and error paintings. with critique of course.

also good point about the cliff, i didn't really notice it until i looked back at it.
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: rtil on April 27, 2012 05:08 AM
do you know anything about color theory? warm and cool colors, stuff like that? if not i could probably find something online for you but i really don't know any good places for tutorials and stuff so i'd have to go looking for something unless i demonstrate it myself.

if you want to paint like the person in your sig you need to be more bold with your color choices. dont afraid to start super saturated and work your way down. since photoshop does subtractive blending (colors get muddier as you pile them on), you'll want to be going back to your color picker a lot, trying different brush modes and avoid using the eyedropper too much. a good thing would be to have a layer where you have blobs of color you'd like to refer back to
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on April 27, 2012 05:21 AM
i get the premise of warm and cool colours but i don't really know how well i'd hold up trying them out. they talked about it in my art class in grade 9 but my art class was kind of a joke so i never really took it seriously. i also remember this pic

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc08.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Ff%2F2011%2F314%2Ff%2F7%2Fwarm_cool_by_rtil-d4fpakn.png&hash=083e6dc132f6f7c941b512339009f6676f15495c)

i think working super saturated is a better idea 'cause i like really saturated stuff but whatever i would choose on the scale when i was painting last time always ended up looking dimmer when i put it on. i assume it had something to do with my brush settings because i don't really know what all the scales do, like opacity mix and persistence. i work in sai btw and i'm not really sure if that gives me a handicap but i've just grown way too comfortable with all the hotkeys i've made. everytime i try to use photoshop i get scared or frustrated and just jump back into sai. when i try to paint i get a similar feeling though. i've seen some really cool paintings made in sai though so i know it's not just the fact that sai isn't capable of some of the things i want to do, i'm just not really going about it the right way.

going back to the colour picker and avoiding using the eyedrop tool is most likely great advice, because i think that might've been on of the mistakes i made with those. the only frustrating thing i find with sai is that you can't save your brush settings as your own preset as far as i can tell, and it can be annoying because i use the brush tool to paint and sketch.

i'm playing katamari right now but hopefully i'll get around to doing some stuff later or if not tomorrow 'cause i really want to provide more examples so i can get through this super early stage quickly.
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: rtil on April 27, 2012 05:27 AM
it doesnt matter what you work in. it's the artist not the tool that matters. sai has superior color blending to photoshop, it even has a palette window iirc

the only thing i would suggest fixing is her left foot, which although is twisting, looks like a stump. maybe try making the front part of her foot more prominent?

as far as the eye goes, you could do the following

looking at the audience: "i-is this what you want master?"
looking to the left or right makes it look like she's looking for someone
looking down: "wtf am i wearing"

your sketches are great, much much better than your digital work. if you could translate the line quality and life you have in your sketches to digital it would be amazing. all it will take is some more practice and studying color, since you already have the drawing skill.

i think you may be struggling with completing pieces because of how large of scale you make them , making them intimidating to you. you may want to start smaller for finished pieces, and work your way up to larger and more complicated compositions as you go

i was actually thinking about that yesterday.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc00.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2Ff%2F2012%2F347%2F2%2Fa%2Fwhat_was_missing_by_stusader-d5nxy5x.jpg&hash=e1ff7983ec1b479437fff5700b07ed5152f4318c)

i took your advice.

i still don't really like how my art looks after i paint it right now.

a decent scanner will run you about $80. a good investment if you plan on scanning out of your sketchbook a lot.

well considering how much better it would look, i'd definitely like to get a decent one sooner or later

i have a bad habit of not realizing the problems of my resolution until i'm too far into the drawing, usually when i start to try to draw details. drawing her face was like drawing with pixels.

this is less pencily than the other brush i was using but it does have a bit of that look after all. thanks!

Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: rtil on February 19, 2014 12:44 AM
maybe try skipping the clean line part and do some color wash in the back of your sketches, and do a more 'organic' approach. you don't seem to enjoy doing lineart or 'filling in' of colors like a coloring book. and that method doesn't work for some people, anyway. you might just be approaching it from the wrong angle.

make a layer behind the sketch and do some big splashes of color. figure out what the background is gonna be like, the temperature of the colors and the light source, maybe make a 2nd layer for your character color . then transparency lock the line layer, add some color to it to match your bg colors, then merge the lines with the paint and start adding definition where necessary. don't worry about making everything "clean", just worry about making it look good. i think it would better suit your tastes. there's a guy who paints like this on dA, and i kind of paint like this, too. i find that i get better results and more interesting compositions by not sweating the small stuff. here's one of alchemaniac's progressions:
(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc08.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Ff%2F2014%2F048%2Fc%2F2%2Fstep_by_step___kiki_delivery_service_by_alchemaniac-d76ucwz.jpg&hash=79c609d5ea4587e0577298659be22f9f1f057634)
obviously he goes into some extreme detail, but you can see how he carves out certain shapes just by painting organically. and eventually just paints over his original sketch and doesn't even bother to do clean linework or anything. by step 4 it's almost completely gone.
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on February 19, 2014 02:14 AM
i'm pretty surprised i had never even heard of alchemaniac until today. the amount of step-by-steps he has on his dA is pretty cool. he seems to use a lot of different approaches but the kiki example seems to be the most organic considering he doesn't seem to be relying on his lines like he does in a lot of the other ones. do you have any advice for brush settings for painting? i try to mess with opacity, persistence and etc when i can but i seem to suck at getting a good balance.

i appreciate the example and the advice, i'll try to put it to good use.
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: rtil on February 19, 2014 04:13 AM
i like to use only opacity pressure sensitive brushes , using the selection or eraser tool to carve out hard edges if i need to. i also have some blocky brushes for hard edges, or 'slice' brushes for things like hair. but i think opacity brushes are best for doing blending. if you're always using 'linework' brushes you're never getting much variety of color since you're always painting completely over another color.

so i'm 100% positive there's an easier way to do the stars than the way i'm doing it and probably a way to make it look a lot better too but i'm really not sure how to get a good effect like that in sai. any advice would be appreciated.
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: rtil on March 22, 2014 01:04 AM
i could easily answer that question if you had said photoshop. but i barely know anything about sai brushes. if it has any featuers like scatter and brush distance then you could make a very simple and effective star brush.
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on March 22, 2014 01:10 AM
i can actually just save it as a psd file (sai's cool like that) and open it up in photoshop too because i want to learn how to use both effectively anyway

afaik it doesn't really have any scatter-like brush options but i could be wrong
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: rtil on March 22, 2014 01:30 AM
just take the hard round brush in photoshop, mess with spacing , scattering and size jitter, maybe color jitter as well between foreground and background and set fg to white and bg to a blue and you'll get some differently varied star shapes and intensities, then i might go over it again with a blur brush so some stars look further away than others, overall though it won't take longer than 5 minutes you can get a very nice starscape
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on March 22, 2014 03:39 AM
for some reason i couldn't find spacing options under the brush settings which is weird but i was able to kind of get the kind of effect you were talking about. mostly just played around with it so it's still nothing perfect.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebackalleys.com%2Fdump%2Ffiles%2F2093%2F4201Ui_rosegalaxy.jpg&hash=37c5f304140ea940e5df447de0fc6ca0f2c48d4f)

i still want to be able to make the middle shine so it actually looks something like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/Ssc2003-06c.jpg) if i can. i don't really expect it to be anything close but i was looking at your adrift painting and really liked how it turned out but couldn't really figure out how to replicate the effect at all.

i have a lot of 'space-y' brushes. for things like nebulas and stuff i use cloud brushes mostly.

spacing is at the bottom here on the 'brush tip shape' tab. the % is how far apart from eachother every brush application is. so 200% would leave a single width brush size gap apart from eachother. for stars you can set it pretty high.

be careful in some areas things start to blend into eachother because it's so light. places like her hair and face, and her fingers. you can play with lighting and outlines to help separate them so you dont' lose details
Title: Re: stusader's show and tell
Post by: naturally on March 23, 2014 04:11 AM
thanks for the info. that's actually funny because i knew i had seen the spacing option before but i thought i was looking through all the options that were there so i was confused. the only one i didn't try clicking was brush tip shape because it didn't have the box i guess.

i think before you start coloring you should work some more on finishing the linework. the angle you've chosen is really difficult, too. you'll need to use color to imply depth

tried animating pixels. the left/right ones aren't too great.

the bobbing up and down motion is right, but the legs are not. looks more like shuffling or walking in place. you need to have the leg opposite of the leading to lift up off the ground. for the front-facing walk cycle, you'd have to be really subtle about it but it can still be done.

i actually really appreciate that advice because i was pretty much looking at it the same way. i've been tweaking them a lot but it's difficult for me to get it not to look like he's just shuffling/skating. the first frame leading the foot off the ground on each end looks a bit awkward.

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebackalleys.com%2Fdump%2Ffiles%2F2093%2F788P9w_z.jpg&hash=f756b68c0cc0445e778cb432dc3aea73ee10b32d)

i'll keep working at it because i'd like to have it look presentable on all sides. the left/right ones look especially glidey to me.

since you're working in a very limited space with this pixel art you'll probably have to try it a few times until you get it right. if the character is walking on a flat surface, you'll probably have to have one frame where the lower part of the leg is bigger than the other part . if the camera is lifted above the ground a bit then it might be 1 pixel elongated on the first step. front-facing walk cycles are not easy to begin with so it might take a few tries until you find a something that just looks right.

i actually was using it at the time but erased it before i took the screenshot. i haven't actually used to it to blend colours though so i guess the for shame still applies.

this may be terrible advice and feel free not to listen to me, but i notice you like really big pretty paintings with wide color palettes — why don't you try stealing borrowing colors from a piece or artist you really like when you color a piece? might give you some good color ideas yo

i know it's a bit off so any critique is welcome

the foreground stuff is good but the house in the distance is on a different grid so it breaks the illusion. lazy nezumi (http://lazynezumi.com/) has a built-in live perspective grid that follows your cursor as you draw, and lets you draw on the grid as you move your brush. it's saved me countless hours of work doing perspective-based pieces, you should give it a shot.

that definitely seems like a handy tool, thanks. i was actually just asked to draw a room with a desk and a chair in one point perspective but i just felt like doing something different. unfortunately it's pretty noticeable at the house and the path off to the right that it's not perfect. i'm happy with it as homework but i want to try using that line art tool next time.

lazynezumi confirmed for handy

(https://thebackalleys.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebackalleys.com%2Fdump%2Ffiles%2F2093%2F885b6Z_trainyard.jpg&hash=b64696f020a1ea4fb72fa33b6a17f62c7c64d373)

although i don't have to i kind of want to keep working on this. lighting and colour are still terrifying to me though. i've tried grayscaling it twice but it's looked kind of bleh both times.

thats a pretty cool little scene took me a second tho to realise i was looking at a pyramid and not a vanishing point tho

also ill have to look into this lazynezumi thing it sounds neat
Title: Re: stu thread
Post by: naturally on September 15, 2014 08:12 PM
yeah i realize the pyramid seems a bit out of place. we were assigned to draw a 2 point perspective scene using a bunch of different shapes and people to get an idea of the scale. a pyramid was one, along with a sphere, cone, ramp and cube/rectangle so i tried to be a little creative.

i definitely recommend trying out lazynezumi but i'm almost sad it's just a trial.

And I got the inspiration for it from this video, which might help you out, idk.
