Despite my frustrations in being unable to find many opportunities to draw from life (if you know ANYTHING about me, you'd know I always would if I could), I <3 how there're so many skilled/experienced artists willing to help me out~<3

Got the .pdf on my phone to read on the go now! Thanks!

Speaking of my "I would if I could"-ish personality...

ANIMATING FBF IS NOT SCARY ANYMORE.

My bestest best friend in the whole wide world took some time to teach me the basics of timing & spacing + squash & stretch. In the green ball .gif, her frames are the blue ones to help me understand that one shouldn't be afraid to add more frames when necessary—I had the toughest time understanding when gravity kicks in and when the object can resist it a little (even now I'm having trouble explaining it). I'm probably gonna animate little things every once in a while to get more practice so all this info will stick better in my skull.

As is, I already know how to tween: Rapture's Best&Brightest

Now I gotta practice a lot to even come close to the animators who inspired me to want to give animating a try to begin with!

...Yes, I totally agree that despite being a heavy ball (which I intended), it needs more bounce... A slight one near the end. The bounce was the hardest thing to figure out; Squash and stretch in and of itself, sorta. I also wish I animated it rolling off of the stage... It was always my personal pet peeve, so I'm shocked that I didn't.

...Now, for me to stop being scared of coloring.

rtil

i'd give the bouncing ball another shot, i dont think this one demonstrates squash and stretch as strongly as it could, nor does it demonstrate arcs, slow in/out or timing very well either. but it's a start

Hnilmik

I'll definitely give the bouncing ball another try or two. It bugs me every time I look at it now, yet I don't know why... But will have a better time figuring it out by trying.

I need to figure out what's up with my new scanner that's keeping me from scanning greyscale/B&W stuff instead of the pink notebook my "sketchbook" really is. I actually never intended my notebook to be a sketchbook—I meant it as a note-taking thingy for seminars and inspirational moments while on the go.

Speaking of on the go, I did a horrible job trying to turn shapes into structure/anatomy practice. Since I was at a restaurant at the time, I tried to sketch waiters, who did anything but wait around.

I sure felt like a loser for getting little more than super rough/scratchy outlines that barely resemble my subjects.

March 2nd, 2012

Warm up sketches during a recording session break at a studio. Foxies are fun, pika pika, and I hate how the "dragon" turned out.

Somehow later in the day, I ended up at a different restaurant and decided to sketch patrons/customers this time, after failing hardcore at sketching waiters. What am I learning again...? Ain't I supposed to be practicing structure instead of drawing flat shapes in space...?

Then I felt like a loser for being unable to draw a cup, which my sister had an easier time doing. And yet, to my siblings, I can draw cupcakes just fine (enough). Confusingly.

Sinitron

these all SUCK (unfinished sketches etc)

actually the fox is pretty neat i guess

Gladius

dragon and pikachu are kinda neat

rest aren't really noteworthy but you were just practicing i guess

This is kinda why I feel strange when people assume I'm not practicing in any sort of way whenever I don't upload crappy practicing attempts.

Especially of people.

::flips table whenever her animal gesture(?) drawings/studies look a lot more "complete" for some reason::

Nowadays I feel extra awkward about drawing anything that isn't from life, so to speak. I know what I draw shouldn't be dictated by my peers, but geeezz I sometimes feel like the only way to get some people to give me space is to upload "THERE. I'M DRAWING FROM LIFE AND DOING SHITTY STUDIES. HAPPY NOW?!" attempts. They're a smidge lucky that I'm really starting to see how my typical ways of drawing suck compared to the things I'm slowly learning, which are the intents and purposes behind these things. The unlucky bit? "Well, sorry if my drawings from life, as you said, suck."

Sinitron

well i mean

they're really vague

when drawing people moving around and stuff i guess it's better to just draw really fast then forget about it, or even draw without looking on the paper (we did this for a while at school) giving you more time to study the subject and transfer the rough outline and then fill in a few details

the fox is pretty nice though

Hnilmik

Hmmmm... I'll try to figure out what's going down.

My biggest issue has often been a case of "WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR (BEFORE THEY MOVE)?!" or "CRAP, I ONLY HAVE 0.00000007 SECONDS TO GET A LINE OR TWO DOWN BEFORE THE SUBJECT MOVES AGAIN!"

Hnilmik

I forgot how to draw my own characters.*

Crap. Have I forgotten how to draw random doodley creatures too!? 5-7 MINUTE DRAGON, GO!! WHADDYA MEAN I'M DRAWING ON COMPUTER PAPER?! NO, ARTIST BLOCK, NOOOOO!!

*Actually, more like the way I draw now differs from how I used to draw my characters, so it feels weird trying to redraw my characters while incorporating what I learned, while trying to avoid old bad habits. Expect lots of crappy attempts in the near future as I re-figure out how my characters are supposed to look.

March 9th, 2012

Tried to refresh my memory in drawing my own characters, before I break my arms out of art-fail raeg. It reminded me just how some characters were drawn more than others.

From right to left.

Melanie and Gerbault, the Rabbits/Hares - I used to draw them a lot because "ANIMULZ R ESSY 2 DRAW". Now, they're extremely inconsistent and look too similar to one another, but to be fair... I've yet to figure out if they're siblings, friends, or a couple. They're just... A pair of jerks, with Melanie being more on the smart side and Gerbault being the muscle.

Commodore Montag, the Crocodile [Pirate] - I used to draw him a LOT lot, even more than the rabbits/hares, because reptiles are fun to draw. Over the past year or so? I forgot how to draw him. Consistently. And enough to turn him around and still know what he looks like. CRAP. Especially since he's a main character later on. He used to be a pirate. Now I'm not sure if it'll work with his story. MAYBE, but I'll flesh him out more.

Scotty & Ajax - Scotty being the timid dude and Ajax being the sunglasses dude. I only drew both of these characters twice, ever. Ajax's face/skull/everything is a painful reminder of how I used to draw. It hurts to look at him. Conceptually, one of these dudes is a psychotic, murderous imaginary friend, trying to make himself real. Too bad in the first draft of the entire arc, I didn't really have time to properly flesh it out, so I'll have to develop them more and try another draft to see just HOW relevant they are to the story.

Dr. Evinrude - I think I only drew her 3-4 times. It's hard getting her overall design down, as the moment I think I get her face the right age-ish, the rest of her body doesn't work. She's supposed to be tall-ish and she still looks a bit too young here, since she's supposed to be in her late 20's or early 30's. As a scientist looking for a miracle cure to an incurable disease, I'm trying to figure out how on earth is she supposed to dress... Or if she should be "combat-practical"-y dressed at all. At best, she uses lots of potions, poisons, and alchemy-stuff.

Arlene Channing - A character I used to draw a lot, but drew a lot less often the more criticisms I got about her head being too round and the more I drew skulls. Her face is supposed to be round though, as I mean her to be a short character in general. 4'11" at tallest—She might even be shorter, and unlike most of the cast, she's supposed to be the LEAST stick/twig-like in terms of body-type. Had a tough time figuring out how to do an "anatomically correct round head", struggled, cut my losses with the second drawing. I need to study hair to make it make more sense. She's a magical writer, but the more I think about it, she might just be a witch.

Luciola (Lucy) - She has fiery/flowy hair and I went back and forth with it being big and everywhere or long and everywhere, but the latter reminded me too much of Adventure Time's Marceline. Later attempts may be flowy instead of messy if I try the long-hair idea again? As is, I decided to cut down on size, since it really threw off her balance to have hair so darn big. As a fire "imp/sprite", she's more like a ghost than anything.

Baihu - As a character made for action, I kinda drew her a lot, but the more I drew her, the more flawed/confusing her design turned out. She was initially really cyberpunk for a world that wasn't, for instance—Robot arms, goggles, and funky pants. Since she's kinda like a partially-turned animal person (think: man turning into a werewolf, but a young woman into a tiger in this case), I've been trying out other ways to draw her. Only to facepalm whenever she looked too uninteresting, or reminded me too much of Skullgirls's Ms. Fortune. It hurts. Of the girls, she's supposed to be more androgynous (especially with her face) because, quite frankly, there're enough "girl" girls doing awesome things. She's the "nobody" in the looks department, whereas the other girls are prettier by default.

This is pretty much "all of the good guys, including the supporting cast" of Arc 2. I actually finished the script of all of Arc 2 already, but as a first, get-crap-done draft, it'll be needing LOTS of edits and revisions before I'm satisfied.

With the exception of 1 and a half, I haven't drawn ANY of the antagonists of this arc. Still figuring out if I should minimize the number of villains, to focus the conflict.

Hnilmik

Trying to remind myself how to draw certain characters of mine, starting with Melanie. I'm still on the fence of having her be useless combat-wise or stick to her using Gambit-like card-throwing, since essentially, it's her partner who does most of the fighting. At most, she's just really fast and distracting and might use her abilities only if she has to... Which is almost like never.

Wow do the feet + balance confuse me.

'Cause technically, I just drew a digitigrade rabbit.  - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitigrade

...When rabbits are really plantigrade, like humans. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantigrade

I totally blame trying to avoid drawing furries as much as possible. I'm even getting the feet confused for the bipedal crocodile, Montag--The only large bipedal reptiles I can think of are dinosaurs and T-rex's are digitigrade, right? Then there's Priscilla, who's part bird (in a harpy sort of way)--Should I even bother with making her legs bird!anatomically correct? I don't even know anymore. The self-consciousness is breaking me. I'm also not sure if the pose is interesting enough, 'cause it looks kinda stiff.

I think I'm gonna record, now that this is out of my system.

Hnilmik

Aaanndd my friend wanted to help me, 'cause I was STILL having the toughest time figuring out why my drawing looked so lame/flat/stiff (as usual), aside from the typical "mistakes".

Stuff like this helps me a LOT.

March 17th, 2012

While sitting in on a Skype call, I drew a bunch of animals!

If this portrays depth/volume better than any of my other drawings, I still have no idea how I do it.

Sinitron

idk what to say it's more of the same except with more detail

i mean it's good and i don't know jack shit about drawing animals

but you know, they're still mainly sketches

Hnilmik

For a bit I had trouble understanding what you were getting at, but giving my drawings another look, I soooorta see what you mean, if you mean that there's still a lack of volume/structure. 'Cause details =/= depth. Unless, jdfghjkadghad

It's the bane of me. No matter how many ways it's explained, for some reason I'm not seeing things right just yet to make it work. I think at this point it's pen mileage until something clicks.

In other news, 'cause you weren't the only one getting tired of my sketches...

I had a headache and decided to take a break from recording to try something outside of my comfort zone: Cleaning/fixing up my sketches and coloring.

It was really relaxing and by 4 AM, my headache was gone~ I sketched this last year, so I'm iffy about how it looks (as in, flat), but if there's one thing I'm MOST worried about, it's whether or not I picked and used the right colors, especially since I'm slowly understanding the importance of contrast. I might touch it up later based on suggestions, since I'm not too sure if this properly pulled off the "child-like drawing" look I was going for. Especially since it looks too "filled in" and not simple enough to begin with.

At least coloring isn't "scary" anymore. I'll probably-maybe do it for often, if I ever get time or stop being lazy.

rtil

it is a bit flat, and the texture treatment you gave it makes it look like he's made out of something plastic, but it's not very easy to pull off a lizard like skin without a lot of extra work. coloring is tough stuff, you have to use color to suggest volume , understand how light and shadow wrap around things, and where bounce light is coming from. i'd suggest doing some light studies on spheres and working your way up to more complicated shapes , maybe you'll get a few good ideas from doing that

Hnilmik

Thanks~ Hopefully I'll be able to figure out a way to make the next coloring attempt not look as flat, based on what I've been getting across the board. It'll be interesting figuring out a way to make Pokemon in profile not look like a beveled surface.

Whoa, 1000 posts.

I went on an art adventure (the mall in this case) with my bestest best friend ever. We talked about art, she offered me tips, but in the end, it boiled down to getting tons of pen mileage until something finally clicks. She let me borrow one of her pens and a fancy kind of paper that beats my computer paper~

Since we spent a chunk of the day window-shopping and talking about all kinds of stuff, eventually, we had to go home. At her house, I tried applying some of the tips and insights she offered.

The blue line corrections and the demonstration below were done by my friend.

I blame this guy: http://ask-swag-onceler.tumblr.com/

The fandom is AWESOME-fun and that hilarious ask-blog finally pushed me into doing some impulse fanart, which I never do because I'm usually too busy practicing or drawing my own derpy characters. I wonder if I should practice painting with this... Probably not since I see all kinds of mistakes in this (ex: hands, waist/crotch/legs, sunglasses, and I'm seeing the hat mistake too now), and yet, Photoshop makes fixing mistakes possible...

[[ ...If there's any incentive to fix up my mistakes and color this in, it's so that the people reblogging this on Tumblr will reblog something less painful to look at the more I look at it, sheesh. ]]

RE: The movie... Oh yeah, the flaws are there and it wasn't able to make the most of the film's MAJOR potential (in Once-ler alone—the story wanted to be too many things and lost focus), but it was still enjoyable. Not an uber movie, but still fun. UGH do I want a remake...

March 26th, 2012

@@; ANOTHER piece of impulse fanart?! At 2 AM?! Art peers, I sowwy. This was practice, I promise, and future impulse fanart will actually involve effort to get out of my comfort zone.

This time, I blame this Skullgirls countdown: http://party-cat-anthem.tumblr.com/post/19528771535/hey-skullgirls-fandom-i-have-a-proposition

Hahaha, out of all the characters, Squigly is probably the only one I find "easy" to draw... Which makes me feel kinda sad that I've yet to draw the character I actually voice ASJHFLKLKJ

xP For the record, I drew Parasoul (http://hnilmik.tumblr.com/post/9729865566) before I was cast as Ms. Fortune. Hopefully this Skullgirls attempt doesn't look as stiff. If there's one thing I wanna redo sometime, it's the sleeve(s) and perhaps adjusting Leviathan to make the whole thing "flow" better, but otherwise, I'm a bit proud of the fact that I drew this in under half an hour.
