humans vs. Animals

Messy fanart attempt of Parasoul from Skullgirls while my computer was trying to kill itself. It was an interesting learning experience, especially upon seeing the aspects that look "off" in my drawing compared to the reference.

Parasoul, as drawn by o_8 himself

Juusssttt a little before my art block. Was experimenting with head shapes with the hopes of redesigning characters so they'd "make a bit more sense".

You can see where I've tried too hard and where I've tried too little.

Tried to drag myself out of an art block by drawing animal heads and trying to figure out where I'm weak in terms of facial expressions...

...Long beaks/snouts are fun to draw.

Also, 'cause I'm a dork, I turned Rapture into a haunted attraction for this video gaming website:

are you looking at reference for those human skulls? they are a bit strange and more animal like than they should be. i think it would help your facial anatomy a lot to do some serious skull studies and see how the facial structure goes over it

Hnilmik

Admittedly, I was trying to go from memory of when I did try to reference skulls a while back, thinking that I got it down.

But since I don't, I'm gonna have reference pictures on hand next time I sit down and draw.

rtil

yeah don't go from memory haha. i can't even draw them from memory, they're very complex shape.

Sinitron

if you draw anime you will be naturally bad at drawing skulls it's just a fact of life sorry

The moment I saw the bearded vulture's face in a photograph I found, I HAD to draw it! So I doodled a bunch of bearded vultures, screwed up and turned one into a griffin, and when I noticed a slight difference between my referenced doodles and freestyle doodles, I planned on studying bird anatomy sometime down the road.

It's probably gonna be during a lazy afternoon or evening.

Since I've been having face/head/skull issues for a while now, and my animals are STILL freakishly better than my humans (because I study them... unconsciously), a couple artists suggested I study ACTUAL SKULLS (what a concept!)...

I tried avoiding it for some reason or other for a while, turning to my typical means of "studying humans" (read: being inspired by my favorite artists, trying to "break down" what they did)... Which I KNEW wasn't going to help me in the long run, but stylized stuff is sooo muuucchh mooore interestiiinngg than a bunch of "boring photographs of real human skulls/skeletons/diagrams/etc."

Then I watched a Gobelins animation that broke my brain and it hit a tad harder that I wasn't going to be able to achieve the results I wanted unless I ACTUALLY STUDIED THE STUFF THE PEOPLE I STUDIED STUDIED. So I drew a bunch of skulls and learned:

1. Skulls are WEIRDly shaped.
2. Not all skulls are the SAME.
3. Yes, as I thought, it IS kinda boring studying a bunch of reference images of humans (as opposed to animals with their interesting shapes), but it's going to help, so I have to suck it up.

I've yet to find a "1-size-fits-all" set of proportions and I don't think there is one, unless I want to get stuck again—I REALLY have to understand this from studying for myself, so I'm gonna be drawing lots and lots of skulls from now on...

And not from memory. I learned the hard way that this doesn't work on people who've yet to understand 'em.

9 and 10 feel very strong. it seems like you got a good grasp on the shapes there. the rest feel a bit too blobbish or unrefined.. it's hard to describe really. but your practice is improving them.

Sinitron

they're good (but anime characters don't have skulls they're not hardcore enough)

Yeah, I had no idea what I was doing for pretty much all of them and a friend of mine mentioned a need to be more mindful about planar differences... Lots of symbols as opposed to "real information". Hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to "un-flat" the things I draw, 'cause it's been another recurring problem of mine.

I don't know whether to be happy or weirded out whenever I watch anime or read manga nowadays... Their heads confuse me so hard. And the rest of their bodies too, in several cases. It physically hurts to look at 'em... dfhadfghkskj

What I really want is to be able to pull off someday are (1) unique silhouettes/body shapes and (2) unique faces. Western/domestic stuff is nice, and I do have a couple influences from that camp, but I have a preference for stuff that just pops out. Not sure if I'll ever be able to pull off anything like Alex Ahad's stuff (which is a mix of influences--crap, the images are broken) or Eyeshield 21 any time soon, but I'll just keep studying.

Who knows how many hours-days-weeks-years Yusuke Murata spent studying guns and football equipment... Among other things.

Screw the anime.

>_O; ...OR ARE MY EYES STILL BROKEN LIKE FUCK?!

Hnilmik

(Fuck messin' with those broken images.)

The Prince & The Sea

I HIGHLY recommend watching this in full-screen mode (and in HD)! It better emulates the experience Emily Carroll was going for with her comic!

Hnilmik

I wake up in the morning to ACCIDENTALLY discover that the animated webseries I provided additional voices for in the studio a while back is ACTUALLY A CHILDREN'S ORIGINAL ANIMATED TV SERIES FOR THE HUB THAT'S GONNA AIR NEXT WEEK TOMORROW!!?!? WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT!?!?!?

rtil

so.. what's the show called?

ZennyPLUS

I'm curious too. What is it called?

Hnilmik

I provided additional voices for this show: http://www.hubworld.com/secret-millionaires-club/shows/mini-series

You can BARELY hear me say "MAGNIFICENT!" near the end of the fashion show dream sequence. Couldn't see my name in the credits 'cause they shrunk the screen to talk about the show coming up next, but it's probably gonna air a few more times for me to see if I'm credited.

@@; I've been providing additional voices for quite a few things, especially lately since I've been pursuing lots of professional opportunities, but I haven't been in the actual credits before~

rtil

the premise for that show is bizarre to say the least. congratulations nonetheless

ZennyPLUS

I hope you continue your work in the VA field, I think you'll make it!
