so i'm sure by this point everyone's seen this ridiculous thing. i remember hearing about it awhile back based solely on the amount of funding it received, but i was pretty convinced it would be quite a few years before i was able to experience it for myself, given that it's just one of those things that doesn't mean anything until you try it. most people felt similarly, and have forgotten about it. however, since the successful kickstarter finished about a year and a half ago, the technology has received a fair bit of attention.

since, september 1st, 2012

-oculus has shown off a 1080p prototype, and another that features reduced latency and positional tracking
-an oculus rift simulator is made, visually comparing the devkits to the expected consumer version
-the boiler room scene from spirited away has been recreated
-the first vr film posts an interactive trailer, while game of thrones films their own short experience
-priovr starts a kickstarter for a full body tracking controller. it looks pretty silly but this thing has like $200,000 as i write this with 28 days to go
-a company named infinite realities creates hyper realistic 3d models
-sony has been strongly rumoured about working on their own for the ps4
-valve has made their own prototype, added a vr support search function on steam, and have made it very clear that they plan on giving it a very big push

although i could go on, i'm only trying to point out that this technology has made more than notable progress over a fairly short period of time. noticing this, it made me pretty interested in where all of this is leading. there's already a multiplayer game on steam greenlight that is literally played by using your mind to throw objects. i've seen both of these threads, so i'm aware this isn't the first time it's been mentioned.

oculus will be at gdc this month and will be talking about future development hardware, (crossing my fingers for dk2 shortly) and the word is sony is finally going to show off their hmd as well.

i'm not trying to sell anyone on this, i'm just interested about your thoughts on the sci-fi looking, not-so-far-off-anymore, future.

rtil

heh, the art team on throw trucks with your mind are all friends from my graduating class at digipen. cool idea for a game, but it basically will cost you $80 because you need that special headset to play it. it's going into open beta tomorrow.

vr gaming was inevitable, it was just a matter of when the technology was there. now we're here and an oculus is probably going retail this year. while i do think it's really cool i think a lot of people are wrong when they say it will replace the tangible interfaces we have like mouse and keyboard. it's difficult to compare a tangible, tacticle interface with one that simply reads your motions. they will coexist forever.

that being said, i will purchase an oculus rift the second that i can without hesitation. i think it's the first motion-based controller worth owning, and the fact that it offers real depth perception is necessary for immersion. and a lot of great games will be supporting it as well

naturally

i actually thought the art direction was pretty awesome looking so i think that's fantastic. i probably won't buy it 'cause of the headset thing but maybe when there's multiple games that use that kind of technology i'll take the dive. i completely agree that it won't entirely replace other technologies like keyboards, but i do think it might have serious economical effects on certain things. specifically, and this might just be me, movie theatres. the only reason i say that is because you can already download a vrcinema app that can run any mp4 or avi on a giant screen right infront of you, and there's a multiplayer version too, so inb4 that. it can also play 3d movies if you're into that kind of thing. apparently valve wants to create something similar so you can play games that aren't compatible on a giant screen in front of you using your hmd.

i mostly just want to jump off a cliff with it.

oh also i need to be the first person to post this gif

zwimmy

so you can fuck Miku now?

but how long before I can be Miku? ;__;

naturally

to be realistic, probably not very long. at all.

it's literally a thing right now for japanese oculus devs to use miku as a utah teapot. there are a stupid amount of vocaloid vr demos.

rtil

yay can't wait for even higher movie theater ticket prices.

as for the rift vr sex thing, it's already been done.

Heh, I remember that vid.

Also how will third person games work on this?

Stu4U

anything for the oculus without first person doesn't seem like a good idea.

naturally

actually it's a pretty common question.

i'm not really sure how 3rd person would look while wearing the thing but i've seen a few attempts at demos whipped up in unity that most people said were surprisingly immersive. i actually hope there's an audience for 3rd person games too, because i'd much rather play a 3rd person horror than a 1st person one. maybe i'm just a pussy, but it's a small part of the reason why i like silent hill so much.

this fantastic piece of japan was posted earlier today on twitter

I don't know why you'd say that. Third person horror games have always been scarier.

Can't wait for society to be atomised completely. This will be a huge step towards extinction, especially for Japan.

an incredibly immersive 1st person vr horror game might j u u st by spooky enough to drive someone mad

really the possibilities for vr are endless. hopefully some incredibly creative people will find ways to make the best and most impressive use of it

and not just as a tool to have sex with things that dont exist

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

anyway japan's birthrate has been in the gutter for a fuckin millenia already
i'm just gonna go ahead and save people some googling time and state THE VR PORN FACTS that i'm aware of

-tenga plans to take that shit even further
-there's a company named frixion that plans to bring people together using 'teledildonics' (lol ikr) so people are gonna sex through computers now
-a game named wicked paradise is supposed to be a launch title and it's being dev'd by people who worked on cod, rage, planetside 2, madden, and lost planet. so AAA porn games are going to be a thing i guess.
-there's already a porn site dedicated to filming specifically for the device
-a genderswap experiment has been done, which is more of a genderqueer experiment than porn but i still think it's really interesting.
-remember infinite realities?

Maybe it's just a generational thing (even though we're like the same age). I already feel old for not having a smart phone or subscribing to any social medium. The Oculus Rift gives me future shock like nothing else. I hope to god my virtual 2D waifu will hold me and tell me everything is going to be okay.

so if you're a seinfeld fan, now you can walk through jerry's place.

i still haven't finished half life 2 all the way through and now i'm happy i haven't yet. i guess i'd need a razer hydra or something for this though.

porn was brought up pretty fast in this topic. why waste good technology on medicine and discovery when we could be *fucking* our virtual waifus.

naturally

and so sony joins the ring. vr confirmed for ps4, neat.

hopefully oculus dk2 tomorrow.

rtil

oculus dk2 preview video makes me want it so bad. but i will be smart and wait for the commercial release, because it will be cheaper. although i will definitely shell out for the 1080p version.
