This thread is a celebration of a certain rare beauty French people call macabre (not strictly horror, dark surrealism/sci-fi/fantasy/etc. is also welcome). I had these lists prepared and formatted beforehand, so apologies if there are any repeats. I also had a paragraph or two typed out for every game/series explaining why everyone should play it, but then I realized most of what there is to say about these titles has been said and nobody would want to read all that anyway. Instead I'll bold the ones I recommend the most and write my favorites in blood. Most of the games I know are Japanese because I don't really pay attention to Western horror, but maybe someone in this thread can convince me to do so. Why am I doing this? Well winter is coming so what better time than now? Also autism.

So yeah, list your favorite horror/not-horror/death obsessed consumer media! I'm going to list a fuckton of stuff because I love horror and have too much time on my hands. Also autism.
Japanese Survival-Horror console games
Obvious/obligatory stuff out of the way first. All of these titles have been localized (may post unlocalized list later). Listed in descending order by number of titles in franchise.
* = Haven't actually played.

I'm more than happy to discuss any of these titles but please use
boo
to avoid unnecessary spoilers for other posters.
Will post more lists soon! Get excited!

as a dreamcast fan i appreciate that Code Veronica and D2 are on your list.

in the spirit of dreamcast horror i will put up Typing of the Dead. an arcade-style type zombie game where you defeat zombies by typing what's in front of them. you needed the Dreamcast keyboard peripheral to play it of course, and its novelty has been ruined by video game vloggers like pewdiepie, but it's still a classic in my book.

All of you old people with old games that are actually scary.

I know EA sucks pretty hard in everyone's mind right now, but I enjoyed the original dead space's atmosphere.
The first time I played the game was at night, and most of the surprises really creeped me out in the dark.

ESPECIALLY THE FUCKING MED BAY

Code: Veronica will always be my favorite Resi game, and totally not because
it was the first one I played and had a huge crush on Claire. D2 has to be one of the most unsettling games I've ever experienced. Most J-horror titles at least has the courtesy to tell you what they are and when to be scared. D2 had no such luxury, which just made the weird as fuck storyline/atmosphere even stranger.
And I totally missed out on Typing of the Dead! I have the official DC keyboard but I only ever used it for Phantasy Star. I also did not know PewDiePie played Dreamcast games. I guess I have a bit more respect for him now. Unless of course he emulates them, in which case I have less.

My favorite game of the current/last gen, Dead Rising!  :D
Dead Rising was one of those games I wish had gotten a PS3 port because I didn't get to played it as much as I'd have liked. I definitely have some pretty hot opinions on action-horror as a genre, but DR was one I found really enjoyable.

enemy zero is great
I've heard so many great things and want to play it really bad.

Gothic/Horror Commercial/Doujin Sound/Visual Novels and PC Adventure games
I haven't played many VN's so I combined these two lists. The first part will seem sparse/obvious for the same reason. I could just link to vgperson's blog for most of the latter part, but I like doing things the hard way. Also autism. List in descending order by number of titles in franchise.

  • (Ryukishi07 - 07th Expansion) Higurashi/Umineko no Naku Koro ni/When the Cicadas/Seagulls Cry 1, 2, 3, 4

(Hugely popular Doujin SN series structurally inspired by Key's nakige games (and just as long, but without branching narratives)
DDL Parts 1-4
    DDL Part 5
    DDL Part 6
    DDL Part 7
    DDL Part 8

Parts 1-4 DDL
    Parts 5-8 DDL
    Parts 1-4 Torrent
    Parts 5-8 Torrent
• (Nasu Kinoko - Type-Moon) Tsukihime/Lunar Princess, Kagetsu Tohya* (fandisc)

(Perhaps not as beloved as Fate for it's anime adaptation, but still worth playing for it's influence in Doujin circles and the ever necessary H scenes)
Tsukihime DDL
    Tsukihime Torrent
    Plusdisc DDL

DDL
    Torrent
• (Hayashi Naotaka/Shimokura Vio - 5pb./Nitroplus) Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes*

(Steins;Gate is getting an official English release next year, but in the meantime you can still read the unofficial patch (Chaos;Head is also good)
Torrent

Steins;Gate Torrent
    Steins;Gate 8-bit Torrent
• (Miki Sugina - Innocent Grey) Kara no Shoujo/Girl of the Shell 1, 2*

(Fantastic horror/mystery VN from the creators of the perpetually untranslated Cartagra!)
DDL
• (Ryukishi07 - 07th Expansion) Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni/On the Night the Red Spider Lily Blooms

(Based on Ryukishi's manga of the same name. Not nearly as long/popular as 07th's other SN's, but still immensely enjoyable (arguably superior)
DDL
    Torrent
• (Nasu Kinoko - Type-Moon) Mahoutsukai no Yoru/A Magician's Night

(Far shorter and less expansive than the other Nasuverse VN's (no branching narratives), but I'd argue just as good)
Torrent
• (Urobuchi Gen - Nitroplus) Saya no Uta/Song of Saya

(Saya no Uta is the greatest love story ever told. I literally cry every time)
Fan translation DDL
    Official translation DDL
• (Hajime Ninomae - Nitroplus) Phenomeno

(Promotional VN illustrated by none other than Yoshitoshi ABe. Doesn't quite make up for Despera never coming out (RIP in peace Ryutaro Nakamura), but still lovely)
DDL
    Torrent
• (C's Ware) Divi-dead/Dividead

(Ugly as fuck by today's standards, but supposedly important the genre. I liked the story)
DDL
• (ZIGZAG) Yachoukitan - Ballad of an Evening Butterfly

(Short as fuck doujin VN from the creators of The Noose)
It's on rutracker.
• (Team GrisGris) Corpse Party

(Classic PC-98 RPG Maker adventure game, and one of the first to become extremely popular (preceding Palette by at least a year)
Rebuild DDL
• (Kikiyama) Yume Nikki/Yume 2kki (fangame)

(Probably the only RPG Maker adventure game literally everyone on the internet knows about. Has spawned literally a hundred fangames. Literally.
YN Japanese
    YN English
    Yume 2kki
• (lol) .flow

(The best known, and probably best, YN fangame. A bit more violent and disturbing than it's inspiration and therefor cooler)
DDL
• (noprops) Ao Oni

(The other really popular RPG Maker ADV with a hundred fangames.
v5.2 DDL
    v6.23 DDL

  • (kouri) Ib

(I don't think I've encountered a single person who didn't like this game. It is a healing experience)
DDL
• (Fumy) The Witch's House

(Another short puzzle focused adventure game with multiple endings. Possibly my favorite)
DDL
• (Sen) Misao

(A cheaper version of Corpse Party in many respects, but still holds a special place in my heart due to subject matter)
DDL
• (Sen) Mad Father

(Lovely art lovely music lovely everything. Lovely)
DDL
• (Parun) Kinder*/Re:Kinder

i just found out typing of the dead is available on steam. it's not the same one as the dreamcast version, it's called typing of the dead: overkill. i think it came out for the ps3 or something? anyway, if you never got to play typing of the dead on dreamcast, buy it on steam.
