it's a very traditional and interesting instrument actually
both in hawaiian music and brazilian music (since the ukulele is a modified version of the brazilian cavaquinho), it can be used to play everything from samba to traditional folk music. also, ukulele instrumental music has become increasingly popular due to people like leonard cohen and jake shimabukuro.

unfortunately it's also the first choice for taking the fun out of most rock songs on youtube covers!!
