I will wait for this thing to come out before I can say if it was a terrible idea or not.

And as terrible as that new Looney Toons  cartoon looks the rest of the new cartoon-network lineup is looking really good

i donated because i like the idea of supporting independent animators. and unlike most independent animators, this guy's got an actual history of getting things done.

also it doesn't really sound like this is going to be something everyone can just submit to, there's probably going to be a quality check or something before cartoons get submitted.

like i said before i don't really care about froginasuit, if kaboing ends up being a failure i don't have much to lose, i didn't put much money in. i just think that because he's been in the animation field for so long , made two great shows, that he might have some idea what he's doing and actually care about animation.

By comparing it to Ng I didn't mean to give you the idea of a bad ripoff, using the same user based voting system, making it even possible for shit or spam to get on the site. I am more or less saying that it would slowly develop into something like Ng if it ever got popular. As you know, Ng has started similar. Its creator ran a website with nothing but selected content (despite the quality was pretty bad). (Un)fortunately it got popular after some time (a user based voting system for approving new content was developed) and if something gets popular, it becomes something bad for a certain type of people.

The problem is that things apparently can't be popular and anti mainstream enough -to be considered good- at the same time and this kaboing thing may just become just another evidence for this theory. It will either be something, not popular enough to promote decent work or it will grow into something you will learn to despise...
Most likely, though, I think he will just use it as a platform for his own shit but I doubt that it will ever become a great symbol of animator's independence...

Although I love Rocko's Modern Life, how is Camp Lazlo a great show? A few years, I watched like three minutes of an episode and thought it was so stupid that I stopped watching it. I just watched the episodes Lumpy Treasure and Bowling for Dinosaurs off of this site and I cannot find the appeal of this show.

Fucking awesome. As a kid, I never would have gotten that joke.

In the episode they go get gym memberships, Heffer knocks down a wall and you can see a naked lady standing in the shower with full frontal nudity.

There is already a site like this called CartoonMojo.com and it features independent animation by amateur animators and professionals in the biz (especially Pixar and Dreamworks). Any independent animator can post there (and upon screening/approvable) it can be viewed and used as a place to showcase your work. But its true you will only get at most like 200 views there... although I did submit a piece there and it was featured on the front page for a bit which was cool. Overall though, this kaboing tv idea already exists and its doing very modestly/dead at times even with big name animators posting their independent stuff.

Frog in a Suit btw has its charm in drawing style and pace, but gah it was pretty boring and went nowhere. Was I supposed to like the frog guy? He was so one-demential ...he didn't even really feel threatening when he choked the guy. But whatever, good luck to him and at least he has ambition to try self-starting with the resources of his fans who want to see more work by him  I can only hope to be that lucky one day where people appreciate my work enough to donate to help it grow! In fact... maybe I will try this kickstarter.com to get some funds to make like a set of screen-printed t-shirts with my art on it :> I've always wanted to do that but my funds are limited to get them made (and i have no idea if anyone would actually contribute but its worth a shot  haha).

while I dont think the idea of a website "for independent animators" has big chances of being successful (even asuming these will be people serious about animation and not like in dugtriofantasies.org) I think i can see what murray is trying to do...

for some reason I try to think of this as some sort of future "what a cartoon show" where essentially good quality cartoons are aired in blocks.
if you can believe something like that can be done "on the internet".

(im only thinking this because as far as I know the what a cartoon show was essentially made to finance upcoming/unknown/independent animators to give them a chance to jump on the scene and sort of expose all of their works in a single place, wether that be a website or a cartoon show, and since joe murray is actually caring about animation it could probably work if implemented correctly)

I just spent over an hour watching Rocko's Modern Life episodes. I'm amazed the show is still really funny even as a 20 year old adult. o_o

I'd love to have hope for once that a GOOD video upload website for animation will one day be made that isnt a steaming corrupt pile of bullshit that feeds off the latest fads that are dancing about the various media sites of the net in a poor attempt to be hip and edgy.
But Joe Murray isn't the first person to try to do something like this.
new-grounds was, for the most part built by artists. People who later became as corrupt and stupid as the users on the site.
Aniboom was originally created by artists. And slowly turned to bribery and hackey "contests" to attract people.
Cuppa Coffee. Became a closed off studio due to copyright issues and turned to television.
Mytoons. Greedy owner took money and ran. Site died. Millions of files deleted.
iLaugh. Scammy contests. Copyright issues.
Heavy. Look at it.
Flashportal. LOOK AT IT.
SuperU. WHY AM I LISTING REASONS.
TGSNT. WHY.
CampNorth. Killed off for no reason. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

All sites that have tried to be one-stop-shops for easy-access independent animation. The few of those that still exist pretty much all failed miserably due to a variety of reasons.
The most common being that they simply cant compete with youtube. The second being that most people, and it hurts to say this because it fucking drives me up the wall, but most people these days just plain dont give two fucks about animation. We are in an industry that is simultaneously trying to reinvent itself and commit suicide.
And the audience that is the internet just DONT CARE to go to a place where they can watch a cartoon that MIGHT be funny or MIGHT be thought-provoking. A place they've never heard of. Not when theres sewers like Youtube that they can easily visit for a moment of time, satisfy whatever pitiable need for pop culture entertainment they need, and then turn it off.

These sites dont have the draw that the modern internet plebian wants.
And so they die.

I'd fucking dance around like a chimp on steroids if someone could make a good indy-animation site that NOT ONLY treats its users fairly AND allows all sorts of content, but can simultaneously keep itself alive and profitable. But I don't think its going to happen. Not in this case either. The internet is just too hopeless now.

I'm going to predict the possible outcomes of this site:

a.) joe never gets the HUGE amount of money he needs and it dies. he sets up a new site called froginasuit.com or something and sells products on cafepress/etsy/zazzle/printshop like most people online who are trying to carve a niche for themselves here.

b.) the site is created, and either dies very quickly, or has to do a complete 180 and start hosting "seth mcfarlance's calvacade of cartoon comedy" or something else thats popular so that it can pay its own bills.

Maybe when the internet completely replaces television one day and money flow online isnt restricted mostly to online games and retail online outlets, maybe then something like this will work.

Until then, f.
