Not that huge of a difference really, but I noticed you refer to rip off games as opposed to flashes in general. When it comes to fangaming in general, there are probably more Sonic fangames out there than Mario ones. Unfortunately, there isn't a very good way to try to prove this as the most well known Sonic fangaming site stopped allowing demos on their site back in '04 due to a change in management. :/
