I've done it before, about two years ago I was really into roleplaying and I basically created an entire universe with an intricate backstory and plots and personalities for over 30 characters.

I still have the 11 page Google doc I wrote that synmarized the entire plot line, though it may be a little hard to follow. I don't know though, because I already have a deep understanding as opposed to some random guy reading it.

I've had some friends betray me since then so I'm not really interested too much in character development, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

is there any reason why you don't do linework on anything but the eyes?i see some places where it could be useful

I'm actually not a huge fan of lineart, but I like sketching and coloring, so I just cut out the middleman.
I'm trying to work on values rather than rely on lineart. Plus, its way easier to alter the picture when I dont have a lineart to constrain my picture.

I mean, I like lineart dont get me wrong, I just dont like drawing lineart.

but linework is also a part of painting. they don't have to be separate.

if you don't like having a linework layer, just merge everything at some point. that's what i do. i paint over some lines eventually, but i leave others intact to maintain the form. there are places where painting a line is better than trying to rely on values

care to be more specific where I could add linework?
I add a little bit of linework on my faces especially in the mouth and nose region.

basically places where the form separates and you have one part of the body overlapping one another. like on kancolle girl where her arm overlaps her body, and her body her left arm. or to avoid that 'cut-out' look like on the bottom pic with her hands, there's a clear sharp divide where the paint is overlapping and i think doing some linework on the hands and fingers would fix that. also things like folds on cloth and bent joints. like her wrists are bent back leaning on her face but without a little line there it doesn't sell the illusion as well.

stuff like this is a really hard sell without line.

So i sorta followed what you asked me rtil and I tried it.
did I do ok? I personally dont favor it but please lemme know what I should do to improve on it.

i didn't think that you'd keep the hatching but i think it's an improvement overall. once you do a layer merge and continue painting there are piece of the original linework that will start to fade away. but there are lines that i do think help define your painting, like around her fingers, the tip of her nose and pieces of her hair.

That was actually just an app on my phone that I drew with. There's one brush that makes it look super sketchy and whatnot.

theyre all looking cool as per, i much prefer the one thats just the linework but i think thats probably just my slightly worrying love for crisp weighty lines

the neck in the last one is as thick as her torso its worrying me a bit apart from that its all good.

you seem to have a good understanding of human proportions and what goes where, maybe something to try might be taking that and really exaggerating it. playing with varying body, head, face shapes ect see what does and doesnt work. you do seem to be in a comfort zone which can very easily lead to complacency

i see you've discovered chromatic aberration

i think you went a little overboard with it though as the whole drawing is super blurry and kind of hard to look at. it's best to use it around the edges and keep the focus/center of the drawing less skewed on the color channels

this is the original size too, i thought upscaling would help but not really

possibly. it's lacking hard edges so it just feels out of focus. i still don't think the lineless style is working for you. i get kind of a 'paper cut-out' feeling from the rendering on some of your paintings especially on the limbs. like the girl doing the crab pose, her legs are very flat. i think you need to pick more dynamic lighting and focus on vector shading style if you want to achieve the look you're going for

it looks painted but in order to show the roundness of her leg i use a darker color in the middle and lighter as it goes around the other side, and put some shading underneath the puffy part of her shorts. i even used the same light source that is implied on the front of the shirt to your advantage.

it's just that if you're going to commit to having no lines in your paintings you are going to have to use some hard edges here and there or things just start looking like amorphous blobs (imho)

People so worried bout diversity that it takes away from improving in other aspects.
I draw the same few characters because they each have an aspect about them I can improve on. For an example, the pale girl with red eyes is someone I use when trying to practice my values without having to worry much about color.

Diversity will come in time guys, I'm not trying to focus on that right now so obviously it's going to suffer.

one thing i've always wondered is why you always paint clothing somehow wrapping completely around the breast instead of stretching from one end to the other, especially since you usually draw loose clothing like sweaters. the material would not hug the skin like that unless it was something skin-tight with the air removed from it like a plug suit from evangelion

I'm digging that you're using sharper lines in your work. before the lineart would kind of blur within the coloring and it was hard for me to follow sometimes.
