Title: fawx's art thread
Post by: shmeckelbutt on May 28, 2012 06:33 AM
yeah so

hi

i decided to give this another try because i only have maybe a year and i half before college and i still need to get better at drawing
and from what i remember you guys are brutally honest and won't stretch my nuts just for the sake of stretching
i'm here for honest advice/criticism with the occasional compliment

so without further ado, here is some fairly old stuff that i kind of like

i'm here for honest advice/criticism

your work basically looks like a knock off of people like nogfish, shirt turtle, nathaniel milburn and other old rwd/campnorth people, only you don't really know how to draw

i thought you asked for honesty?
Title: Re: fawx's art thread
Post by: rtil on May 28, 2012 09:05 AM
it looks like your art is going in a lot of different directions, like you see  a style you like so you try to copy it. that's fine but eventually you need to find your own path and probably practice some life drawing and basic draftsmanship. there's lots of tools online for stuff like that
Title: Re: fawx's art thread
Post by: shmeckelbutt on May 28, 2012 09:11 AM
i think there's a difference between honesty and throwing the same backwater shit you've been throwing for years because you have some sort of vendetta against me especially considering i haven't really been following any of those artists for over a year or so

but i can't really complain since i expected you to say this anyway so whatever

@rtil yeah ive been practicing more realistic things in my sketchbook and i want to take a life drawing class. ill probably post some of those but i just decided to post older stuff at first. if you have any of those tools onhand that would be greatly appreciated. thanks

hahahaha dude we've spoken like twice i'm just fucking with you

generally your stuff just looks really flat and oversimplified, essentially the same things you've been drawing for years, and no, i'm not just being a dick about this part, they do still look exactly like nick and tyler's stuff but at a lower level of understanding. if you stay inside a comfort zone and draw the same thing all the time, you will never get any better. go look at things you like, figure out what kind of stuff you want to do and what kind of artist you want to be, take things you like from each one and try them out yourself, using them to make your art better out of it. otherwise rtil beat me to it, but life drawing is basically the key. do it as much as possible and learn to like it, because if you want to get better you'll be doing it most of the rest of your life. if you struggle with it, look into or ask around for decent artbooks, which can be decent in getting your shit together.

that should be a good start huehuehue

i like your drawings, i can tell you had fun drawing them, and they look fun too. also theres definately some talent in there

BUT
-you need to look at more different artists. and draw from life too: dont be just influenced by other peoples drawings and cartoons! try drawing your friends faces for example or make charicatures of peoples' faces or bodies that you think look charicature worthy
-i can tell by your drawings that you just start drawing and then you end up somewhere. in other words theres no plan/idea. lucky accidents have their place, but you should try drawing with a purpose: make up stories with your characters and think up (perhaps unique) poses and expressions for them. sketching first helps.
i used to draw everyone the same way: knees bent 45 degrees, random expression on the face, arms look like J's, flat as shit. after a while you get fucking tired of that shit. make up stories! think of cool new poses and expressions that arent just random! youll be surprised at what you can think of
-drawing in a 'cool' style is fine, but try to draw goofy, funny, dirty, creepy, serious, sexy, beautiful, ugly and cute too. and if youre good try combinations of those things

im guilty of half of this stuff too so i feel a little bit like a hypocrite saying those things (and i was gonna tell you to try some color shit too, which youre probably better at than me ), but i think this is good advice. keep drawing drawing drawing until your hand hurts and then draw some more

everything about this is true
i guess it's kind of like drawing has become more of a crutch than an aspiration and i feel stuck/too comfortable. that "start drawing" part is so true it hurts. i've wanted to do lots of storytelling stuff but unfortunately i'm not very good with creating characters, universes etc. but yes this is all good good good

anyway!!

it's good to expand but in your response to rtil you said you've been trying more "realistic" things, but i wanna highlight that and say that it's not really realism you're looking to do, it's more developing a structural understanding of whatever you like drawing. for example, say you want to draw human characters, then understanding human anatomy is important. the components of "styles" like eyes, noses, etc are just an abstraction of reality made up of symbols that to the human brain resemble pieces of an actual human body. unless you actually want to make realism, in which case go bananas. some surprisingly good words on this are here (http://whitetrashpalace.deviantart.com/art/UNDERSTANDING-YOUR-STYLE-1-169660607?q=boost%3Apopular%20in%3Aresources%2Ftutorials%20style&qo=17/) and here (http://whitetrashpalace.deviantart.com/art/UNDERSTANDING-YOUR-STYLE-2-169660702?q=boost%3Apopular%20in%3Aresources%2Ftutorials%20style&qo=19).

I like the machine and steak typography! But I def think you need to work on your anatomy, and probably various facial expressions. And I think your best bet is trying to get friends to pose for you (but I'm just saying that because I'm cheap and don't want to have to pay for classes)

not bad man, just keep drawing and eventually a style will evolve and it'll be as easy as taking shits, unless you're constipated, just don't try and force your art, let it flow BRRRRRGFNGBFgfgfgdmmf

if you post some (new) complete pieces, not doodles, it will be easier to give you advice re: composition, color etc. and go beyond the trademark "reconcile your style and intent, more anatomy studies and drawing from life" response

as always, there is a real feeling of fun in your drawings and i think that even though some of your work is deficient, its "heart" is in the right place, its obvious you want people to be entertained by them. so heres my two cents; you might not believe this as of now but i can guarantee you that out of even a few hours of life drawing, your cartoons will improve because your brain will automatically apply things to them. grab your sketchbook, go out and draw whatever you see, anything using only your observation as reference. then try to redraw this person/object/place using toons/symbols. this might seem trivial but during this process you will realize what parts of reality you are neglecting, and replacing with symbols inside your head.

in other words, if the drawing from life and the drawing from imagination are too similar, then youll know if something is wrong! good luck though

i liked eman's point about the mental differences between life drawing and drawing from imagination, because that's really good advice and something to consider. a lot of what i've had to learn the hard way came from fucking up the way i was thinking about my drawings and eman put that into better wording than i ever could have. i forgot i already ^'d at tmk's life drawing advice, sue me

the first two posts i was just poking fun at fawx because all of our interactions have literally been "anigen gay", "draw more paste on noses", i don't think anything i said after that was really dickish or unhelpful. i even pmed him and gave him a link to a bunch of artbooks and my skype if he ever needed book recommendations or whatever, so you guys can stop whiteknighting now

first of all, id like to say that in your latest drawing the shadings of the faces you drew are really well done and that face you crossed off from that "horny body" drawing wasnt that bad either, i could see a little bit of her head and face while it was covered up.

how's animation going for you my dude? you still do any of those

oh lol i think i've drawn that model before.

i don't know how serious you are about art or anything (pretty serious i imagine because: college) but i would maybe look up if there are any life drawing classes around where you live.  i'm lucky, so there's on every tuesday down the street from where i live and i've found that it's really different than drawing from photos (different in a good way).  the atmosphere, the actual 3d model, i dunno

did you do a sketch of this before you finalized it? if you were to draw the skeletal structure of this girl she's broken in like 10 places. and her face/head is kinda blobbish. try maybe basing some of your poses on a pose from a photo that you like or something. you could learn a lot from it

hi yeah i did!! but i just gave up on this drawing i don't feel like it would progress very well if i worked on it, even though it's already like halfway done.

here's some more silly sketches. i've barely had time to do any drawing recently which is rather unfortunate.

i think in your realistic drawings you're borrowing to many elements from your more cartoony style.

things like oval eyes. personally drawing realistic expressive eyes has helped me with cartoony eyes.

i think learning how to draw realistically helps with ANY aspect of cartoon drawings. you gotta understand reality before you distort it

yeah i agree with both of these. i've been struggling to get rid of bad habits that i've had for so long, but life drawing certainly has been helping me quite a bit!! so i just want to say thank you to everyone who gave me honest critique, i didn't just shit it out and flush it down the toilet. it means a lot 2 me :o)

your weak point is definitely anatomy.. especially facial anatomy. keep practicing it though. the stronger you get at that, the stronger your cartoony work will get.
