Enjoy because this took me forever to compose and master. The opening theme from the Manga movie "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" from the mid 80's.

It's not a bad pose, it's just the lack of a background that gives the impression of floating and unevenness. She's a cutie and I think stu got down the description quite well. :D

because it looks unnatural. you seem to think i'm trying to tell you draw blandly but that's kind of the opposite.

dilly

I think what stu is trying to say is that the pose seems somewhat impossible when you look at it in a skeletal point of view

the image on the left shows that the character's back is arched when following the flow with the hips. This gives it that leaning look we always talk about. now, the image  on the right was modified so that the hips aligned with the shoulders, allowing the spine to flow comfortably while still retaining that female s figure you were trying to accomplish.

i'm not an expert in the subject matter, but i think you'll have less balancing issues if you try to align the shoulders of your character relatively to where that character's hips are.

(i also hope this makes sense :I)

<@reptilicus> am I in backwards land?
<@reptilicus> if i go to the toilet will poop go up into my rectum

naturally

yeah that's partially what i'm getting at. i only mean to be constructive though. the way they're posed in most of them just look uncomfortable, that's all.

GhostingFish

Thanks a lot Dilly for pointing that out! >< ive been getting too cough-up in attempting to build my own style vs working on realism then doing what I feel right. This help a lot and I thank you a bunch for pointing it out! Not that easy learning by your self in a busy busy world.

and on to other news, I am writing a novel composing an OST and music callobs with a few noted musicians. :I bla. that is all.

Regarding the weird pose(s), it's the wonky anatomy that's getting me. Keep in mind that there's a fine line between style and misconceptions, and though there're a couple ideas on what style itself means, as a whole, it shines more when you know what you're doing, so get a better idea of the "rules" of anatomy. That way, when you bend them (not break them), our eyes will be more drawn to how your pieces are (theoretically, stylistically) meant to be seen and less drawn to the "mistakes".

In example, the first things that my eyes were drawn to were the neck and shoulders. Why? The ribcage is turned one way, while the character's left shoulder/arm is... Seemingly disconnected/dislocated from its socket as it's closer to the viewer than the other arm. The neck doesn't look as turned as you're trying to do; If anything, it looks like it's sprouting out diagonally from the body/chest instead of connected to or arching from the spinal chord. In a way, the head/neck/arms are from one body and the rest are from another and they're fused together in a strange way.

While we could take it a step further and talk about the awkward poses in terms of balance (ex: everyone looking like they're falling), I think it's best that you work on the anatomy end first so the rest can follow. Besides, that's POSSIBLY a planes thing.

tl;dr "...the neck bone's connected to the--" ~♪

THIS is why everyone thinks your characters look like they're gonna fall over.

Hopefully this helps, since I strangely thought of your drawings the moment I saw this.

trent bortknob

do life drawing. some people swear by it and act like it's the best thing ever. some people say it does nothing.

i say it does a lot of good. i lost interest in drawing, but when i started life drawing my skills improved drastically and rapidly. focus on life drawing and just being able to construct the human form. after you can actually draw well, style will just come naturally. it's good to have a good foundation before you start fucking with stylistic shit though.

that's my artistic advice.

You got it, drawing from life is the best place to start.
