Quote from: HnilmikWhy is it that I draw animals many times better than when I draw humans? I tried thinking in shapes for people and it's a hit or miss and when I tried to think of relatively similar anatomies and bone structures (to an extent), I'm not sure how that works either. It puzzles me to no end.

It's because we're constantly exposed to people (even when we're born we're surrounded by people). and we know, when protraying them realistically, what is right and whats not, even if all our knowledge of anatomy and body shape is subconscious. It's why I find drawing faces and hands realistically to be the hardest thing ever. As social beings we focus mostly on the face, and then the hands, to read the emotion of the person we're looking at. So we know what to expect, and even non-standard proportions in a face have some sort of acceptableness to them. So mistakes are just really really easily noticable after a short duration.

It's not quite the same for animals because we don't have the same exposure with them that we do with humans.

I do like your sketches though! I'm loving the lizard to bits, haha.

This is my audition from the voice acting competition I participated in during Anime Expo 2010.

While the other girls were doing namby-pamby, weepin' monologues of sadness and lukewarm performances from Ouran, I chose to do a monologue from a Chinese psycho lesbian ninja, Soifon from Bleach. I didn't place, yet apparently, I was so close to doing so that they included my monologue in the "This is the challenging competition the finalists were up against this year!" clip reel, even when it was a bad shot featuring a lot of head room.

6+ flippin' hours just on lineart for my flash project.

No, I did not sleep. Yes, this is an improvement from an earlier sketch. Wow, I can see the anatomy/proportion/perspective issues.

I have 1 week to finish this project. Hell no I'm not gonna do much frame by frame.

In other news, have some Tegaki. I made this for Y. Chang's birthday!

I wanted to take a figure drawing class this fall, but it had a CHAIN of art classes as a prerequisite and my educational funding/budget is... Tight. I'll figure something out.

Hnilmik

First time I've ever colored in lineart. Flat colors. Fill abuse. So to get better at coloring, similar to drawing lots of stuff from life, I gotta color a lot stuff from life, right?

...Gawd, those arms and hands are big. Excuse: Waitress arms... But I wanna make them more appropriately sized. I plan on giving her a more curvier figure, especially a wider upper body, in later doodles.

Meanwhile, I voice for Ultimecia in this:

Hnilmik

So, for the sake of getting a rough idea down (since I changed my flash a lot; the storyboard I submitted for class looks nothing like what I'm doing now), I Tegaki'd a quick "storyboard picture" to know where I wanted to end up, but cleaner...

After doing some work so more can be seen on the stage (regretting that I drew my scratch doodle on Tegaki) and learning that Photoshop clearly knows perspectives better than I do, here's the result...

The "problem" at the moment is... When we did our work-in-progress presentations, people in class liked my made-in-20-minutes, children's doodle more than what I was going for, the reason being that my hand drawn stuff "looks more organic and interesting than realistic/pretty textures and designs". Plus, it was more consistent with the drawing of Sam from behind. Semi-realistic setting + "animated" colored character = jarring

What do you think? What would work better for a Bioshock-y setting, 1958-pre-but-getting-to-fall of Rapture? I think I'm going to re-draw the scene since the messiness bothers me.

What I'm trying to achieve: Start at the view of the city/fish/bubbles through the glass and slowly zoom out, intersperse with picture(s) of Sam, end with black. Sam will be nowhere in the scene itself. Overall mood should be ominous. Inspired somewhat by the following (fan-made) video.

 It's an Atlantic Bluefin Tuna!

rtil

the problem with going for realism , especially including persepective, is that the characters have to match it as well. another problem is that realistic art tends to be boring as it leaves no room for artistic commentary or exaggeration. what you should do is pick the style that interests you most. some people really like to do hyper-realism, and that's fine. but if it bores you then don't do it. you should pick a style that you enjoy to draw

Nice fish!

I also really like this:

You're doing a lot of fun looking stuff! keep it up!

Hnilmik

Been having a tough time drawing scenery. Artist block in Rapture means "Quick, draw something else!"

Guess my inspiration.

Haha, leftover tuna... Now back to work.

My first complete, non-Tegaki, done-in-Photoshop piece! For my flash~ Posting this here since all this won't be in the frame.

Also, facing a few image quality issues in flash. It gets jaggy in Flash 8. Where do I change the quality using that one trick? Best versus High quality?

I finished my first flash! Yay! And I wanna put it on NG, but I don't want to upload something without a play/replay button and I'm not quite sure how to make those (and make them not look like crap; it's a pet peeve of mine to have to click thin letters to play a video).

I'll be trying to figure out how I want them to look and the API stuffs, but I wonder if anyone is bored enough to help make the buttons for me?

rtil

just use the NG preloader and swap the assets with your own

Hnilmik

A friend helped me figure out how to make the replay button. Finally on Newgrounds~

My brain wouldn't let me come up a design for the preloader/play button that didn't look slapped together, but I'll be sure to make something nifty for later animations!

Tablet practice time! Doodled Dedede to get some colors and a pose down. Will draw something less doodley and more pretty/detailed/bigger in Photoshop later.

I totally did this as a joke for my friend.

 My jokes kinda suck.

Finally scanned in the random stuff I sketched/doodled. I wonder if I'm getting too comfortable with sloppy-ness? It's like the things I do are getting sloppier... And yet, I used too be too scared to even start drawing because "it'll be sloppy/messy/a waste of time" and I'm kinda broken-improving, what with getting some "ink mileage" outta me while slowly understanding things. Hm.

I draw/doodle when I'm stressed. My dad got into a car accident just a few days before I doodled all these, which was during the final round of AX Idol, in which quite a few of my friends made it into finals.

How do I perspective. Was trying to design Sam's apartment for my Bioshock project, before I took ZILLIONS of pictures of buildings for research. Dunno how to draw a Tommy gun, much less someone holding one. Lastly, how I brainstormed the script for my Bioshock trailer. If I know the general key points, I write 'em down, then rearrange everything.

...Meanwhile, I was trying to redesign Dahlia, evident through me reusing paper above. She used to look like this:

Out of all the auditions I got, I liked this one the best because it added additional dimension to her.
http://www.4shared.com/audio/eN61KpWZ/Dahl...lowe_AD_01.html

So, voila, a character who's supposed to be easier to like.

...And an audio diary profile picture ain't gonna cut it. She's gonna be in the next flash, so more character development time for her, along with Virgil, whose appearance must be based off of Y. Chang's performance from yay long ago~

SUPER sloppy rough storyboard/thumbnail things. Like... 5-year-old-drawing sloppy, but I think in pictures/rough drafts, not fuzzy outlines in the head. How do I storyboard for animations. I'm scared of frame-by-framing, but if folks who can't draw can do it...

...Aaanndd that's it for now. I'll upload the ZILLIONS of pictures of buildings (and streets) I took of New York New York (Las Vegas), San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills in another thread. In a way, I feel I'm putting in WAY too much effort for this Bioshock project of mine, but it's kinda fun!

While in San Jose, I tried that 30 seconds, 3 glances thing on my aunt and uncle's doggy. THAT DOGGY HAD ADD.

sdfgdjfkfjdfhjgfkjm but at least later I learned that my sloppy rendering of the doggy's outline was the basics of gesture drawing? Or something like that?

Hnilmik

This guy is fun to draw.
Quote from: HnilmikAny bit of feedback would be appreciated!

Lawrence of Arabia Romania got really, really fun to draw/expand upon.

He's also a Gerudo but don't tell him that

CVG

You're a busy lady!! Wow nice to see things like concept art and storyboards and sketchs and voice. It looks like this is shaping up to be real nice! :]

Hnilmik

So I drew...

Medic - Enlai
Engineer - Chriselda
Scout(s) - Banshee
Sniper - Lawrence

Now a heavy (yet to be named)

Also, a result of boredom/procrastination.
