Talk about movies that, in your opinion, have a great concept. It could be something like shutter island or memento.

As for me, I'd love to mention "The invention of lying" by Ricky Gervais.

The film is about a parallel universe, so to speak, where "the gene for lying hasn't been developed". Nobody knows that lying is even a thing - they always say the truth, no matter how hurtful. Things, such as "Your baby looks really ugly", which nobody gets offended by though, they would just respond with something like "Oh it was even uglier when it came out".
Then, at some point, the main character finds out that you can lie, and since everyone is only familiar with the truth and telling the truth, they believe whatever he says, seeing as they take it as the truth.

the truman show

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
v for vendetta
the game
groundhog day
battle royale
coraline
stranger than fiction

i think there are a lot of movies with great concepts. i've also seen shutter island, memento and the invention of lying and agree with all of them except for shutter island.

I blame Jim Carrey for my being incredibly self-consciousness and paranoid.

You're all watching me. Right now. As I'm picking my nose.

Dude mine too... no joke.  :O  I don't usually cry at movies but that one gets me every time. Maybe it's because it's so existential and makes real life seem more real. Most things that people cry at in movies I just find cheesy.

Speaking of the guy who directed that movie, he made another movie recently with an amazing concept called "In Time." It had Justin Timberlake and they lived in a world where time was currency and all the richest people were practically immortal because of all the years they had. It was actually a pretty bad movie though, I just thought the concept was cool.

rtil

i remember a trailer for that. never saw it but i did like the idea

the truman show had a great script, cast, performances and soundtrack. jim carrey can play a great serious role, i think that film is his best example, even though it can be funny at times.

Well, I don't know if it entirely counts (seeing as they're short films as opposed to feature length ones), but I think a number of the works by Don Hertzfeldt explore some pretty interesting concepts and themes. In particular, I believe his films Everything Will Be Ok and The Meaning Of Life explore some pretty thought provoking concepts, such as themes concerning existence.

<+fawx> im trying to animate a dick coming out of a toaster how do i go on about doing this

i think a scanner darkly's narrative was way more complicated than it needed to be.

dark city was... weird.
the only real problem i have with it is that it pulls the amnesia card and doesn't even do it well. it basically goes from oh no i'm being framed and don't remember anything to holy shit i have psychic powers.
edited for potential spoilers
