This fucking band. The singing and instrumentation remind me a lot of a 60's pop band I used to listen to, but I cannot for the life of me remember what they were called.

I sorta know them, but I keep forgetting to listen to more of their stuff. Like, I feel inundated with new releases sometimes, there's just so much great new music coming out that it's hard to remember to listen to back catalogs, and then I end up listening to Morbid Saint's 'Spectrum of Death' for the millionth time, which doesn't fix anything, but damned if it isn't a great album.

Also, I lied, I do genuinely dislike one genre, or rather, class of songwriting, since it runs the gamut of styles, yet all ends up sounding the same. Contemporary christian music. It's all I knew until I was ~10 (well, that and chiptune, which I do still love) due to my fucking insanely religious mom, and it lacks everything that music should have. It's bland, stale, and preachy, all in one. I suppose my hatred of that is more tied to the lyrical platitudes it's rife with, but I have a strong distaste for it all the same.

It's disappointing (though perfectly legitimate) when something like this can shut off an entire genre for you to the degree that you can't even appreciate the good parts. Though I'd be inclined to agree that this is one type of music that does tend to be fairly bland as a whole, so perhaps if you had to pick one, it's one of the best to completely shut out.

Yeah, surprise orchestras in pop songs are like my favorite thing ever. You should seriously listen to Ghost if you like

really mellow, tripped out psychedelic rock?

Especially their album with Galaxie 500's Damon & Naomi. The rest of their releases are fairly balanced between melodic folk tunes and acid freakouts.

Makes a serious case for the most beautiful metal album ever created. Maybe even most beautiful album in general. Being able to portray the beauty of vulnerability in the most stoic of people has the effect to make lips quiver. Watching From A Distance is so good.

I first discovered them through their song Faggot around eight years ago after I was watching Advent Children AMV thingies on YouTube because I'd just discovered the film and wanted to pretend like I was a long-time fan in order to seem cooler. I'm glad I stuck around, for this isn't one of my favourite tracks, though I've since gotten several limited edition physical copies of their CDs.

New Deafheaven is quite pleasing to me because of the fact that they toned down the blackgaze element a little bit. Emphasis on a little bit. I've always much preferred traditional "atmospheric" black metal over the vast litany of blackgaze bands out there. As for the new Mercury Rev, I have yet to listen to it but I downloaded it. I'm curious to see if it's closer to their neo-psychy outputs a la Yerself Is Steam or the Flaming Lipsisms of Deserter's Song (amongst the other things they did, of course).

I haven't listened to New Bermuda yet but The Light in You was okay. I love the instrumentation in all their Jon Donahue era stuff but I don't think they'll ever top the songwriting of their first two albums when they still had David Baker.
