i guess this fits in with "thread of bad"

this is what most of north philly looks like, an area of philadelphia just about center city (downtown). it's basically one big gigantic slum, stretching around 5 miles in every direction. there are a few good blocks, the campus of temple university being a good example, but for much of this area there seems to be very little hope. most inhabitants are well below the poverty line, and it seems like local government doesn't really give a fuck about the area because there is a lot of urban decay, half demolished buildings, trash on the streets, out of control weeds, etc. all of these things add up to, you guessed it, crime. as far as crime rates go, this is the worst part of philadelphia, and i've heard people say that there are more murders in north philly per capita than in any other part of the country. it's probably mainly drug related, but still. not a place that you want to be walking around in after dark.

i don't live in north philly, but i do live right next to it and have ridden my bike through it quite a few times. during the day, i haven't encountered too much trouble. i have noticed that everyone gives me stares because i'm white, and i've also noticed that they all seem to hate cops. i heard a story about a cop finding a woman who had been raped in the street and she wouldn't give him any information, she was even giving him attitude. i guess she was worried that if she told the officer anything, people would come after her or her family for snitching. eerie if you think about it.

still, i really like living in philly so far.

nah dude, where i live is really nice. sure, there are "bad" areas but honestly, most of those spots aren't even bad unless you are involved with something bad, like drugs or gangs or something. from my experience, the majority of philly is nice and safe (or at least relatively safe). also, there is a ton of stuff to do all of the time, which is a plus. the main thing that attracted me here was the thriving indie/punk music scene.
