i can understand why they want to change their business model (not that i agree, but eh)
but i disagree even more with using kickstarter for the whole operation. they've got two big-ass conventions under their name, videogames, merchandise, a bunch of special sales/auctions... I'm pretty sure they could save the 500 grand by themselves, if given some time.

using kickstarter when you're one of the most famous gaming icons on the planet, who has a very good chance of getting things done yourself, seems a bit unfair.
