well you basically just proved my point.. the games barely improve (according to you), and they're all virtually the same except on the visual aspect - but you still buy them despite your numerous complaints.

sev

I think we can all agree that Skyrim would have been a much better game if the main character was voiced by Michael Cera.

Sinitron

no, a lot of areas are improved, but some that would be important for an rpg (immersion) just reek of cop-out, and people have been giving them shit about it for years

oblivion's awful character models and animation pretty much became a running joke, the gameplay was heavily watered down from morrowind to make it more user friendly but it was still kind of irritating and weirdly balanced at time and retained the character classes from morrowind so it still wasn't accessible

skyrim corrected this by just ditching classes altogether, which was an improvement, and a much better move - if they had also made the introductionary sequence less mandatory, it would have had the best starting point for a new player of any bethsoft game

my point is that for each game, they pour more resources and money into graphics, voice actors, etc etc... things that are supposed to improve player immersion, which makes sense in a role-playing game, but they still use character animations that could have been lifted from 2001s morrowind, as an example of things that don't make sense since most characters you come across use the same 4-5 voices anyway but they're all stiff like dry wood

paying people to to sub-standard work isn't a business model

rtil

you don't understand their business model at all. their business model is purposely holding back on making the "perfect" game, while simply introducing a handful of things their customers want to keep them buying the sequels. you seem confused why some parts of the game are sub-par and could clearly be better. well i'll tell you why - it's so they can make money on elder scrolls 6 when they add the things you're whining about not being there, and have something new to whine about for elder scrolls 7, while they have another $60 of yours in their pocket.

Sinitron

um no bethesda are just a shitty developer/publisher

skyrim was the only one i paid full price for anyway so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

rtil

i never said they were a good developer. i said they were good at business. i'm right and you know it

Sinitron

uh making a broken console port that deletes saves isn't good business

Sinitron

as in the version ported to the ps3

rtil

every game has glitches. i wasn't talking about glitches. i was talking about features.

interesting argument, I wonder if future elder scrolls releases will start to show signs of heading towards a dynasty warriors/ CoD level of redundancy

sev

they come out like every 4 years, so i doubt they'll ever be like madden/CoD

to me, it's on the same level as like, Starcraft II. a good game with a lot of playability (although to a lesser extent with skyrim because starcraft II's main feature and biggest attraction is the fact that it's its own esport) but not really a masterpiece with any deliberation or soul put in by the developers. it's overall a good game and the time you'll put into it if you're into the genre will definitely make up for the fact that it's a full-priced game, but i wouldn't call it like an amazing game

plenty of fun though

where the fuck did you get "you're not allowed to write negative reviews of games" from "gamers feel a sense of entitlement"?

i got it from you calling gamers "entitled" for wanting some satisfaction from what they buy. sure there's the whiny elitist "hardcore" crowd but they are shrinking a little bit more on a daily basis and are not who i am talking about.

are you mad because you paid $60 for a game you didn't like without doing any research? you can't take that out on me, you have no one but yourself to blame.

why do you assume that? i am defending the very things that make that "research" possible, such as footage, un-paid off reviews and demos. you can't trust major sites/magazines or trailers, as they are extremely biased.

quality products in an industry are driven by competition

sales may be what determines the direction of the industry, but they are not what determines my spending. quality is, and i find the best way to gauge the kind of quality i seek is to listen to the opinions of other players. if they were not at least a little "entitled" they would not share their opinions at all.

i call gamers entitled when they complain that a game does not live up to their manufactured expectations, and complain about it like it should be fixed to their liking. you can't please everyone and anyone who develops games knows this and won't bother trying.

you don't need to bother to defend independent reviewers and opinions - i don't read gaming review websites and magazines and i really have no reason to as i'm not much of a gamer to begin with and most of them are paid off to give high scores. but i don't know where you get this idea that my explanation of how game developers work and how whiney and jaded that 4chan poster sounded have anything to do with censorship.

listening to players is definitely a legitimate gauge of a game's quality - but you also have to factor in personal experiences - some people blame game performance on things like setups, some people are just plain stupid and can't figure out how to play a game properly.. and then there's personal preference. there are some games i enjoy that bore the shit out of some people and vice versa.

i think the people most disappointed in skyrim were people that actually expected it to be a perfect game, which is a lot of people. it is pretty fun all around, but it's by no means perfect, but anyone who expects the game to ever be tuned to their liking in future sequels should let their hopes down. it's a full price game ($60) that's sold millions of copies -- their formula is working, and they don't need to change anything.

i can agree with rtil's side to this argument because out of the masses of people who play skyrim, there are not actually that many people, proportionately speaking, who are actually critical of the game to the point where they give a shit about some of the more specific opinions i've heard. most people are actually just digging their skyrim, having fun in the fairly open world and making dumb arrow to the knee jokes. in every demographic of people who converse on the internet, there's always something, for a few months at a time usually, that's the "thing" at that point, where the party's at, and right now, it's definitely skyrim.

however, i don't see this lasting for more than another couple of months (given that good games come out in the next couple of months, please let there be more good games in the next couple of months). i got my hours out of skyrim and now i pretty much don't have any other reason to pick it up. was a pretty good game, just like starcraft 2, but party's just about over for me.

^ tl;dr really passive contribution to this conversation kekeke

Blordow

anyone seen that pebbles cartoon about the arrow in the knee joke? fucking hilarious shit!

Jon

At least there's going to be that Steam Workshop thing where you can browse and download mods. that'll probably satisfy most people with animation mods and stuff like that
