yeah basically what jekyll and hyde said

i dont remember using black to shade most of it.  heres my argument where ill try to defend myself on the use of black as a tone, (and ill probably lose but thats fine). Even though I draw a lot, i am visually an idiot. i dont see any reason Not to use black as a tone YET, even though i know it doesnt exist (only in total darkness). so i have every reason not to use black except i kinda like how it looks. but thats still no excuse.

this is how ive been working with most of these, it might help you judge iuf im doing something wrong.

a)have a layer with the basic colors
b) have a layer to "shade" using other colors, but staying away from black
c) since i still want some parts to look darker, add a layer with black ONLY to shade some stuff, then lower the opacity.
d) the fourth layer contains the lineart only. which I guess i should also not keep in black because most of the line drawings ive seen where the lineart doesnt get in the way look a bit more...alive?? i dont know. i also dont know how to change the color using modify tools. I KNOW theres a way to do this using any other color i believe except for black. care to help with that?

on the second layer i described I try to use blues and greens for the most part. but the tones never appeal to me. i feel like i need darker colors to "make my point". i dont want you to think i havent been listening. its simply i havent found a way to separate my tone logic from my color logic.

i think this is probably a bad habit i got from painting with oils/acrylics because i was trained to begin with only black and white, then wait till it dries, then apply color. color theory makes more sense to me when im doing enviroments i think because temperature is key. as oposed to drawing like this.

aaand a few extra things:
-i dont use burn and dodge, but my stupid black layer is basically the equivalent of it.
-i think the blend does show volume, but maybe im just blinded by that wall of self delusion that art causes after you finish. this is probably the case

i just looked at it again and yes the stokes are shit (especially on the hands at the bottom... (and i dont like the lineart either). i guess i could excuse myself on the "i needed to finish this fast" card but honestly  it could have been better. ill probably fix this next week

emanhattan

you know what wait a minute i think i can see now yes yes yes its bullshit yes what the fuck is going on with his legs OH NO THE TRUTH

I SEE IT

IT BURNS

emanhattan

btw! this will eventually become a 3d character and im trying to come up with ideas for more interesting guitarrs... the pentagram doesnt really translate too well

also while we are talking about color, this is my issue, this is one of the guitars +the same thing with "bullshit black shading" thoughts?

emanhattan

also this was literally made in 15 minutes so... do you think i should spend more time in this stuff?

rtil

the way you get your coloring done is different for everyone, but the fact that people say the coloring looks bad, trying to explain why it looks the way it does doesnt change anything. i think there's a lot about color that you dont understand and your paintings reflect this. it might be good to try something more simple or practice more with color theory instead of continuing to color in this fashion.

and i htink you should spend time on something until you feel it is finished

haha thanks guys

i think the superhero and the rest of these files are not forever lost, they might be waiting for me to find them somewhere on my computer back in seattle. so idk they might have a future :)

i did sketch a few more thingies recently though! i have a tendency to always draw skulls from a profile view which gets old fast- will fix
