Bleach's English Dub In Review

In this thread I will review, and point out all the high's and low's of Viz media's English dub.

I have watched [and recorded] all 25 episodes of Bleach's first season dubbed in English. I figured I would wait and finish an entire season before I cast judgement on this dub, and here is what I have to say.

The Good:

The main cast is great, Ichigo, Rukia, Chad, Orihime and Ishida are all extremely well casted. I wouldn't say perfect, but definately 90-95% range. they have kept the original openings and endings, the only alteration to the video seems to be that imbedded Japanese. There are no edits or wash down in the script, even cuss words are accurately translated without being watered down for television, unlike there Inuyasha dub. The original back ground music is used through out the show, no changes or odd enhancements to make it seem out of whack like funimation did with DBZ.

The Bad:

As the dub begins approaching the second season and the cast grows in size, alot of the secondary voice actors do not match up to the main cast. Renji is medicore, Captain Byuaka doen't seem quite as cold as his Japanese counterpart. Ganju doen't quite meassure up to his Japanese counterpart.  Zaraki Kenpachi is not manly or scary enough. Ichimaru Gin who in the Japanese version had an Osakan accent was given a formal British voice, the exact opposite of his persona when he would have been much better suited for a slangish southern american accent. And most of the other officers and soul reapers fall in the "so average it hurts" catigory of 70-75%. While the only voice I truely hated was Ichimaru, the rest of the secondary cast is simpally medicore. The fact that these characters have a major role in the second season may hurt this dub even more beyond this point. However despite this, the main cast manages to stay sturdy through out.


Overall: Great main cast, medicore secondary character casting. I can't blame viz really, they had so many characters to voice you can't get a good voice actor for everyone.

I hate this show so much, mostly because its just like Avatar, the supporting characters are 10x more interesting than the main dude.

But yeah, the voice acting is okay.

I like the show when its in japanese and thats it, it doesnt really make any sense in english

Tries to stretch out plot lines, too many sub plots, cliche characters, a lot of fillers. The english voice acting is horrid, but decent compared to other dubbed animes.  I still watch it though.

i kinda liked season 1 okay, actually. but then season 2 came, the fights started lasting 30 episodes and it became dbz all over again for me, only with less testosterone which is a problem for me. at least dbz was a lil' brutal in between the screaming
