avoid excessive use of layers at all costs. it makes you too dependent on the convenience of digital technology , consequently making you worse at traditional media because you get used to the fact that you can delete layers/erase whatever you want at any time.

anyway, i would say this piece is too ambitious. you need to focus on line before you go straight into color. the values are too close together, there's no variation of hard and soft edges, and it's too much an attempt to try and make something look 'real', to the point where everything looks really plastic and fake.

if you try a portrait again, i would work strictly on line and a form of hatching that suits your for shading.
