Did you see the "Recobbled" version of the piece of crap that was released by Mirimax when they took the project away from Richard Williams?

This is probably my favorite Williams cartoon, aside from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I have Raggedy Ann and Andy (Williams was also the supervising animator on it) on VHS and I haven't been able to make it past the long intro song because I can't stand it.

mishkamash

yea i saw the recobbled version
they took it away? wha?

rtil

incredible movie. never seen the 'arabian knight' chopped up version. recobbled final dvd should be out soon, i think the people making it are only selling it for $10. i'm definitely buying one

This is the only good thing Michael Eisner's done that I can think of.

Also, the thief is awesome.

rtil

Eisner has nothing to do with the recobbled cut, that's being put together by Garrett Gilchrist. unless i missed something

what the fuck is this shit. I don't know anything about this film but I want to see it now, but I was reading that wikipedia article I mean... How are they just gonna go and take away someones baby like that? William's masterpiece is what I'm referring to. That's just messed up man
Oh, wretched ephemeral race ... why do you compel me to tell you what it would be most expedient for you not to hear? What is best of all is utterly beyond your reach: not to be born, not to be, to be nothing. But the second best for you is—to die soon.

Gerkinman

Not only did they take it away, but they got Koreans to fill in the blanks.

I thought I read somewhere that Eisner is a huge Williams fan. And Disney bought out Miramax during Eisner's reign, and Eisner was the one who pushed for the Recobbled one in the first place.

Hmph. I could be wrong though. I read this a year and a half ago when I first saw it on Youtube and I can't remember where I read it. My older brother might've been the one that told me, as he was the one that sent me the playlist.

Squeef, the very same thing happened to the entire Fleischer studio back in the 1940s when Paramount forced the Fleischers out of their own studios and took away the rights for Betty Boop, Popeye, and all the other characters Max and Dave came up with.

sQueef

Jesus the art industry is a big steamy pile of shit isn't it. Kill or be killed is the mentality those studios have? The world sucks.

Not so much as money hungry corporate bastards rip off anyone that they can

He's not the only person who's had this happen. Terry Gilliam has his "babies" taken away and 'finished' by other directors/studios all the time.

terrible what was done to this film but im glad its resurfacing in a new and improved version

i still think that scene with the falling down the staircase is easily the best animation ive ever seen. it boggles my mind how on earth it could have not been animated in 3D on a computer
I have more of a life writing this review at 1145 pm than you guys do making these movies. . .

This.
And that counts for pretty much any of the chase or action scenes.
Its mind boggling.

it makes me wish computers had never been invented. imagine if mainstream traditional animation had just kept advancing beyond the point of thief and the cobbler. like think if american filmmakers had continued animating without computers and were making stuff like the triplets of belleville right now instead of fucking bee movie.

if computers hadnt been invented most animation these days would still suck.
no sane networks would dare to pony up the money to make animation like the theif and the cobbler
or anything even close to that sort of level of animation
everything would be the same except no cartoons on tv would be made with flash or aftereffects and cgi. we'd still have horrible stuff on tv and in theatres.
its not an issue with skill. i'm sure there's at least SOME modern animators with that level of skill. its an issue with how much doing it costs on cels.

maybe someday someone will do something like this in flash. but i doubt it.
