Arbalest http://www.darkestdungeon.com/wp-content/uploads/Arb_final_logo.jpg

nice klan/lynching narrative in a fantasy fiction setting

Lovecraftian KKK

My fav one though was the highwayman one, the comic was actually readable and the emotion in his face in the last panel coupled with how the shattered window the viewer looks through seem like dark teeth make for a dank composition

yeh lovecraftian horror is something i really enjoy, id hope to create some kind of meaningful tribute to it when im a more competent artist. ive seen a few films recently adapted from or inspired by lovecrafts work (Castle Freak, The Resurrected, In the Mouth of Madness plus a few other). most of them are pretty damn good but a lot of the time they end up getting schlocky, castle freak was a fucking mess of a film
I've only seen In the Mouth of Madness but I'll check out the others. The Outsider is one of my favorites so that sucks they botched it in Caste Freak. It's not really supposed to be gory. Then again I can't really imagine how a story that is constructed around the narrator not being described could be faithfully adapted into film unless it was shot completely in POV.

Lovecraft is one of the most singular American authors imo. This is the story the opening cinematic of the game most immediately reminded me of whilst watching a friend play it:

It's not my favorite but if you haven't read it you'll notice structural similarities.

That channel has most if not all of his stories uploaded by readers of varying quality. My friend said Red Hook found DD's narrator through a Lovecraft audiobook, but I prefer the lack of emotionality these guys bring. Makes the prose/horror stand out more.

Really fun to listen to when you're alone at night, for the full effect.

i actually liked that one too and the abrupt end suited his sudden moral crisis

My favorite was the Leper one. The rose petals were a nice touch. The Arbalest one was good too.

I didn't really get the Abomination or the Man-at-Arms.

i'm trying a party of occultist/occultist/bounty hunter/abomination (only using bounty hunter cause i dont have another abomination)

the occultists are very effective at healing the abomination but i'm not sure how well this party will work long-term without stress heals

yeh i really liked the Lepers entry, the idea of him being shunned from society through some kind of ordained ritual is pretty hype and also raises more questions.

The Abomination appears to have been locked in a tower and branded, where he then breaks out. its not too interesting but having played the game i like having an explanation for the big A stuck to his face

however i also dont really understand the Man At Arms entry. its quite hectic and chaotic but i think thats to simulate the mess of a fight he appears to have been in. im assuming its a survivors guilt issue considering the battlefield looks very bleak and he couldnt save the little dude he was carrying with him. maybe the green flag surviving is representative of how ridiculous it all was, they all died fighting for a flag?

the bounty hunter is actually a very good character with really high damage output and those sick flashbangs to mess with the enemy formation. he combos well with characters that mark and stun. the abominations would probably be ok considering they can both hunker down regaining health and losing stress. ive used 2 abominations before, usually i have the one on the second row lashing out with Beasts Bile and Manacles while the front row abomination spams Absolution until hes ok to Transform.  but yes unless you put down a campsite there isnt really a way to stop the occultist and the bounty hunter losing it.

especially if youre transforming 2 abominations a lot and the process of turning stresses everyone out.

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

Oh I read it as him being like a beloved member of the colony and then he has to leave to go play DD and everyone's sad. Yours makes sense too though, like an Ashitaka scenario.

I like your readings of the other two also. Man at Arms especially makes more sense looking at it that way.

yeah the two abomination thing didnt really work out very well in a medium dungeon, long dungeon is not likely to happen without a stress heal, it's fine in short dungeons though

i have been wanting to try occultist/jester/abomination/abomination, just have the occultist do nothing but heal, and the jester do nothing but stress heal
