tomoko feels like a genuine character. whoever writes this stuff had to have lived it. she reminds me of my middle school and about half of my high school years, including the cynicism, which stayed with me up to today. and that's why her crippling shyness and perception of people in general is so funny to me. even though they dissolve in to comedic situations, i like the brief touching moments as well. i haven't laughed this much at an anime since season 4 of minami-ke. hope it continues to be this good

It's great to see an anime with an "everyman" type character, especially one that is relatable. I just finished the first episode and I can't wait to see the rest.

That ending is funny and painfully cute.

glad you like it! episode 4 out now

just saw up till ep4 today, love it
i found it extremely watchable, the funny bits are actually funny, and its surprisingly endearing
and wowoww the intentionally awkward scenes are truly cringe inducing

What is this sweat!?
Is this a basketball manga or something!

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

"...it stimulates the part of the brain called "shatners-bassoon", and that's the bit of the brain that deals with...time perception..."

still the greatest anime of all time

this episode was pretty meta and introspective. i didn't catch some of the references near the end. i could tell they were parodying something but i don't know what.

ZennyPLUS

Even the ending was worthy of a few "..huh?" on ep 5.

rtil

apparently the ending is a reference to this (minus the ahegao face)

Even though they to take their time for the punchlines (just as the manga itself), they just manage to execute it to wonderfully. I really love the style of this studio. Most of the stylistic devices used in some scenes are pretty damn clever and so are most of the cuts/transitions to the subsequent scenes after the spaghetti moments. Oh, and they actually manage to maintain this thin line of love/pity and despite that you feel for the main character.
I feel kinda bad for already having read a major part of the manga and already knowing the punchlines of each story, but the way they managed to adapt it really makes up for it. Another nice aspect of the show is how they manage to play with her emotions and interact her thoughts. Despite completely knowing what she thinks, it is still pretty hard to analyze her actual feelings (especially at the end of each episode). This show is a mixture of extremely sadistic comedy on a social level and very subtle drama and one of the few that actually make me feel a bit sorry for the main character.

The firework in the end was a pretty nice way to conclude the episode and I guess the tune in the background was some Miku song. If that's not a tba bonus, I don't know... In any case, this show already is a piece of cult for me and considering the clever execution and the many details and references built in by the animators and directors, it should become a cult show in general. Unfortunately, I am not quite sure whether or not it has the same success in Japan... Watamote seems to be more of an oversees thing.

Also thanks for posting that video! I was wondering what kind of reference the ending of ep5 might have been.
