i'm not entirely sure if that's true. the pc game market is a growing industry and it's not going anywhere, but the only successful handheld of this generation is the 3ds. mobile gaming is often cited as the "future" of gaming - but these are the same people who say things like "pc gaming is dead", when clearly it is doing the exact opposite of dying.

i would not mind if consoles died, though. as the tv becomes less relevant in society, so does the console. someday, one piece of hardware is going to do everything. and i don't think it's going to be a console. i think it's going to be a pc.

this is why "iThings" are such a successful market for games. i think the future of gaming is going to be all phones and PCs. the ithing market is taking over the crowd that bought into the original wii, which there is no longer a market for. the ithings are definitely the future of gaming for a lot of people. I stopped playing console games and have a hard time comitting myself to an entire 3DS game anymore, and honestly I think the handheld market is going to get murdered by the ithing market in the next few years, but PCs will always prevail for real games. this next generation of consoles is looking really iffy though, i'm starting to think it might have been wiser of these companies to release these consoles a few years ago, as having such a long break from a new console release seems to have weaned a lot of "hardcore" gamers away from consoles and onto steam and gaming PCs.

i think the respective notions of PC beating out console, and mobile beating out handheld are too different to compare. at this point in time, PCs are more powerful and customizable than consoles, and can be changed up to feature controls (such as buying a USB controller) that fit the needs of a player. a PC doesn't need to be small, because a PC is stationary and can be whatever size you want, so generally the only logical reason to go with consoles over PCs would be because of exclusive titles. phones and other mobile devices, on the other hand, are not the same as PCs in this situation, sporting arguably less powerful hardware for gaming, very different designs that aren't particularly friendly for bigger games, and are also physically much smaller than the Playstation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. similarly, you also cannot plug in a controller to customize your mobile gaming experience. you are stuck playing on whatever phone you have.

for this reason i can't see mobile gaming replacing handheld consoles for a long time — at least not nearly as quickly and to the extent as i can see PC replacing console. the exclusivity of console titles is decreasing more and more every year... in contrast, handheld titles are not only pretty exclusive, but a lot of them probably wouldn't even be playable on mobile devices. i see no reason why nintendo or sony would want to jump on the mobile train anytime soon.

yeah, im not saying this is gonna happen tomorrow, i just see nintendo/sony having a hard time keeping up with the ithings in the long run (looooong run, im sure the 3ds will last for a while and maybe another handheld after that)

Bamyasi

But can it play FINAL FANTASY X??

the idea of playing games off 'the cloud' seems like an awful concept that will barely ever work

Flash

so as long as you share accounts you can work out a scheme in which you can play all of your friend's games, and he can play all of yours? isn't that like trading used games?
maybe i misunderstood the way this works

soup

yeh supposedly its like all the fun of trading games with a friend

without having to move, or physically see your friend.

hahaha well it isn't all that horrible though! being able to play a game i have when visiting a friend, at the shortest whim, seems like it could really come in handy.
like rtil said though, i wonder if downloading a multi-GB game off the cloud will really let me play what i want "at a whim".

hate to rain on your smug parade, but microsoft's console department and microsoft's windows department are two entirely separate entities. also a pc doesn't have to run windows

RichChap

fun fact i applied for a job at a microsoft store opening at my local mall today. so excited!

rtil

wait, where do you live? i didn't realize microsoft stores were spreading. they opened the first one in the world here about 2 years ago right next to a mac store. but then the mac store needed a bigger location and moved upstairs :wile:

for real though, this shit is pretty ridiculous. microsoft have really fucked up atm and are going to need to find a way to dig themselves out of this hole pronto. i don't know a single person who is looking to purchase xbone at this point. i can't even insult them, i just feel embarrassed for them.
