This is a pretty game-changing discovery. Scientists have been theorizing its existance for almost 50 years and now a particle which behaves like the higgs boson should has been discovered. They need to evaluate the results now to find out whether it is the higgs boson (which will lead to a grand unified theory and prove the big bang) or not (which would open new doors for all fields of science).

Exciting!

i think so far what's been confirmed is that it is indeed a new particle, which is a big deal. whether or not it is the theorized higgs boson remains to be seen. what that actualy means though i have no idea, but it is kind of exciting.

Well the properties of the observed new particle are similar to those of the higgs boson, although they now think that there might be more than one kind of higgs boson particle and they merely discovered one of them.

For those who don't know: The higgs boson particle is the one providing the mass of objects. Before that, gravity could never be worked in into unified theories which of course bothers every scientists because gravity is one of the 4 forces of the universe along with electromagnetism, weak force and strong force (each having particles supporting them).

this is what a physicist had to say:
QuoteActually, we observed a new state at 125 GeV and it seems consistent with a Standard Model Higgs boson. We have NOT discovered the SM Higgs boson because we simply haven't confirmed that this new particle is the SM Higgs because we're only looking at mass itself. It could be something else with a mass of 125 GeV. To actually claim it is the SM Higgs, we need to confirm that it has spin 0, the right coupling ratios, etc. And that's what I'm working on right now. But it is very exciting because we have discovered new physics.

apparently stephen hawking owes somebody $100

i'm mostly excited for what it might mean for technology in my lifetime

Yeah the mass thing was the propertie i was talking about, that's something that no other particle has and up to now it was speculated that the SM higgs was the only particle with that precise mass of 125 GeV. Although, as I said in the first post, it can still be something different which would be just as interesting - if not even more interesting. Factually speaking, it's certainly a new particle and that in itself is amazing already.

And stu, I'm not exactly sure what technology could arise from the discovery of the particle. I mean there will definitely be some new technology for scientists to use, but for people like you and me, i don't think too much will change. Unless the discovery of that particle would speed up the process of building reliable quantum computers; that would be jaw-dropping amazing.

my guess is that its first application will be in warfare if it is possible

naturally

but we could already blow up the world if we felt like it

i wish the world wasn't so gun crazy

Quantum computers already exist and are being used, but not in warfare but in science! They're functional but can break rather easily (once observerd, it breaks. That also counts if an electrone was to pass by the processor for example)

that's pretty cool and all but what is your least fav. song on a tuesday to listen to psi ??

psi blew this question off so im gonna come out and let everyone know that listening to "moves like jaggar" on a tuesday just fucking sucks do not try it

i hate how 12 year old girls just copy/pasted those shitty lyrics all over their facebook and twitter accounts and not a single one of them has any idea who mick jagger is

naturally

how do you even manage to not know that. i mean rolling stones are like second to the beatles and you'd have to be living under like 50 rocks to not have heard of him, even if you lived in another country.

funzop

i dont mind that all that much because i rarely have to deal with 12 year old girls and i am overall kind of impartial towards the rolling stones, i just think the song is horrendous and especially horrendous on a tuesday

Shida

GUYS STOP DERAILING THREADS JESUS CHRIST.

g3no's thing is the best thing I've seen out of my confusing explanation.
We haven't had a successful quantum computer yet psi - but there has been successful components. There are 5 to 7 criteria to be met before we can call something a quantum computer and nothing has met them all yet!
