MEKTEK MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries

basically this is a free version of the old MW4 expansion with a lot more mechs added in and possibly functional multiplayer

download the MTX client and start installing the MW4 game in it (it's like a basic version of steam sorta, not too had to figure out)

the game is a little dodgy to start, but give it some time to give you the settings window (make sure to set resolution) and EULA

depends on what you think is good, i thought mw3 was better but mw4 is playable too

the mechs aren't as moddable as mw3 for example but it's more in line with the lore i think

mektek also adds a lot of stuff and balances it out compared to the vanilla version of mercenaries

Some cool mechs to get settled into are the Cougar, Shadow Cat and Vulture, outfitted with just missiles and lasers. None of them are particularily hardy, but are decently mobile and still pack a punch at all ranges, though keep in mind missiles need a lock to effectively hit anything at range, which can be achieved by simply hovering your reticule over a target for a moment.

I also like the Hunchback IIC for its massive close-range damage, though it's a little sluggish compared to the Shadow Cat, and the Hellhound and Wolfhound are also nice if you can get used to mixed weapons systems and heat management respectively.
