Oh, he's designed to be easy to animate :y
eventually the middleman is cut out, and he gets headphones that don't have the band.

With all due respect, those sound like the words of somebody who is reluctant to flow with the times, not learning to do something a new way because the old way is better.
I'm not too worried about being turned down from jobs because of which program I use, either. Sai can export as photoshop documents, as well.

yes and no. in japan they use sai a lot. i only say that 'cause i know all the art for catherine was done in sai. it's likely that they use sai for tons of things. it's an incredibly popular program and is really useful. i can't say how it fares for artists in north america.

i'm not incredibly familiar with either sai or photoshop so i have no say in which one is 'better'. it seems subjective anyway.
i think photoshop offers more functionality than sai, but that won't necessarily make the artist any better for using it. it's less about the tool and more about the skill of the artist. what program you made it in, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter.

Not necessarily. Photoshop is raster-based and Sai is victer-based.

mhm. i want to start learning how to paint but i'm not really sure which program i'm going to end up using. it's pretty much a matter of preference it seems.

It's always good to be fluent in photoShop, but I generally like the way the tools in Sai behave more.
I'll probably be using them in tandem, which seems like the best path to take imo.

okay this thread has now gone off topic

This one came out worse, imo.
I'm not really a fan of soft shading, I think it looks kind of cool on the fabric, but her hair is fuuuuuuuucked.

Jon

the neck seems a bit too long to me

Not even gonna disagree. This one's gross.

rtil

i think you're not a "fan" of soft shading because the way your shading doesn't match the material. you're coloring the hair as if it were some kind of glossy laminate, and the tones don't offer anything in terms of volume or dimension. maybe you should try cel shading or only do soft shading in places where you think you absolutely need it - especially if you are going for this line-heavy style.

RadWalrus

Yeah, I still like Pokemon...

...and I'm only slightly ashamed.

I think I've learned my lesson with style of shading vs. line style

rtil

yeah, i think cel shading suits you better. still, the pose is a bit awkward (looks like he's about to fall over), and the unusual amount of detail on the shoes i think is unnecessary, considering how much simpler the rest of the drawing is.
