There are a few gems but in the big picture I can't stand animes (the overall majority of it at least...).

i get that shit so much its so stupid
its impossible to fight too, the most you can say is "no thats my genuine opinion and youre being unintentionally trolled" which they cant even wrap their heads around most of the time

@retro

but also yeah i dont know a lot of anime even though id be willing to give some a go so i guess cartoon ye

I like both, but watching anime tends to be more entertaining for me.

But yeah I also agree with what was stated about the variation in styles amongst cartoons, which can be pretty cool. Although in all honesty I disagree with the fact that it's hard for anime to be more stylistic. It's obvious differences between 'stylistic' series can seem subtle when compared to cartoons (which is generally true), but that doesn't mean different anime series can't have more unique art direction. I'd cite a bunch of examples, but I don't have time to go image hunting now :X

Shut the fuck up about diggin into semantics, zop is right.

Anyway, I prefer cartoons a bunch but there are still some super-fuckin awesome anime series.

im not sayin anime artists dont have unique styles and all, they do have subtleties which separate them from one another, but not NEARLY as much as other forms of cartooning though

Anyone who didnt click anime on this forum is lying

I like 'em both~

They approach the things I like in their own ways, like:

Movement:
Cartoons - Exaggerated actions pack more punch and dynamism and looks a lot more convincing (as opposed to crappy anime where a punch looks stupid-weak)
Anime - At its best, some wicked, choreographed, stylized fight scenes (as opposed to "these characters do a simple action in a high-tension moment" like in superhero shows)

Writing:
Cartoons - Pretty clever stuff, especially when the comedy is smart (as opposed to jokes initially made to appeal to "Japanese humor", making it more of an inside joke only anime fans would understand), and for lack of better words, I usually feel as if the scripts are actually written by writers (and not just "some random dude barfing up stuff as he goes" episode to episode/FILLER SEASON)
Anime - When it's not written like a chair assembly manual (my god, MUST this attack/physics-bending be extensively explained to "help my suspension of disbelief"?!), the storytelling feels more engaging to me since they address themes I don't typically see in cartoons and I like continuity/character development; I like feeling smart after watching a good series too

Visual Style:
Cartoons - Overall, very, VERY distinct styles and they rarely ever bleed together into a colorful soup
Anime - The devil is in the details; Subtle differences between artists aside, they can get crazy-ridiculous in how the art looks when they kinda cut back on the overall motion (is it pose to pose or something like that?) instead of settling with simplicity. I also really, really like it when the style of the series or whatever clearly has western influences or at least took more visual risks

...Now I'm very curious as to what Japanese people learn to make anime

Quote from: rtili actually like when both are fused together, not only in style but in execution. like FLCL, panty & stocking and gumball. you get the best of both worlds

Only if the japs are producing it. I generally hate it when some american / canadian  / french company tries to cash in on the style. Usually the end
product is something hilariously bad, and makes me feel uncomfortable and want to vomit.

both have their pros and cons, but the line seems to have been blurring a hell of a lot lately (P&S, avatar, etc).

your everyman will see 'kids' cartoons as looney tunes/flapjack/dexter etc and 'adult' cartoons as family guy/south park and nothing really in between even though it does exist. however due to the west's culture, these types of cartoons are the majority of what you're mostly going to see.

same with anime - people either assume it's merchandise pushing collect-em-all shit (beyblade), fight fight fight fight (naruto, dbz, bleach) or super edgy adult gore and tits mayhem (pretty much anything produced in the late 80's/early 90's that became cult hits in their own right after being dubbed, such as ninja scroll, akira, wicked city, goku midnight eye etc).

in this sense, both offer something unique simply due to where they were made - if anything the difference between the two is a culture thing more than anything else

cartoons for me - especially in the 90's - have pretty much always felt more animated with characters based on unique silhouettes and shapes whilst anime sacrifices that for detail and more realistic body anatomy (that said, cartoons like he-man attempted this too). let's not forget the cookie cutter 'face faults' (shit like the teardrop over the head and those weird lines under the eyes when stressed or whatever) and lazy mouth shapes that even plague the best ghibli films

on the other hand i've always kinda had a problem with this cartoons/anime argument. ever seen a french comic or cartoon? that shit is amazingly well drawn and animated most of the time. it also usually looks very distinct yet borrows from other styles just like anime does/did, yet nobody makes a pretend 'genre' up for french animation and compares everything to that
