he's pulling a typical creationist argument - that everything in science is a theory and stands not to be proven, but only to be disproven, and therefore nothing can actually be true. but if that were true, we would not have a lot of the technology that we do today. our current understanding of things allows us to innovate based on theories that have not been disproven. theories have to be rigorously tested to stand on their own, and from that we improve life and technology.

but he's being irrational on purpose - he might as well be the bible-thumper who says that gravity is just angels pushing things down. no sense in arguing with him

I'd say "I can't believe explaining 8th grade science to a grown up is a lost cause" but I guess I have to believe it.
