it usually goes like this:
sketch -> rough bg colors underneath -> clean up sketch -> paint underneath sketch for foreground -> eventually merge sketch and fg paint layer -> finish fg paint layer -> finish bg paint layer

i merge the sketch and paint layer when i feel like i no longer need the linework to guide me. then i end up painting over most of the lines

i referenced a 6-cylinder engine but i gave it 4 sides so it could be a very cool looking traffic light

but now i realize with such shoes you would need some strong legs
