Art progression (from old to new)

So the other day I opened a bunch of old folders from art I did back from when I was young (like 10yr-14yrs) old and I thought it might be fun to make a thread as a chronicle of how your art has changed/or stayed the same , through the years. I still actually like looking at this stuff because it reminds me that "Yes, we as artists do get better the longer we practice." :]  Anyone can post in here btw....it's not just for my stuff.

Okay first post:

When I was 14, I made this lizard character named Marking10249741 (wtf was I thinking?), but he was called Mark for short. The story behind him was that he was a subject in a lab which subjected him to experiments his whole life and labeled subject 41.

Here is the crappy Photoshop picture I did of him lol. Wow, I can't believe I used that brick texture haha man that was bad. And he had a HUGE eye. XD

I even found the super old MS-DOS animation (music video set to Korn, omg) that I did of him. Keep in mind I was 14, and geez was this violent! And now I look back and realized like my parents weren't even concerned when I showed them these things?? Haha, I think nowadays if I were that age making this, I'd be pumped full of Prozac or something by freaked out counselors. It was made on a 75 MHz computer and the program had no sound function...so I would listen to a CD of the song on replay and actually draw lip-synch by ear! Then when I showed it to anyone I had to play the animation and play the CD on a boom box and push play just at the right time to line then up haha.

Anyways so I captured it on my PC and uploaded it to Vimeo. It was the first time in 14 years I had ever seen it finally inlayed with the music :3

Today, Mark is a dead character who exists only in my old files.


But that's not true for this next piece:


2. Clash the duck. I was 10yrs old when I first drew a happy little duck named Clash (a name I gave because his colors clash badly).

Here is the first version of him (at 10years old) ms-paint: note he had like no neck or legs haha

Here he is at (14yrs): grew some legs and his three hairs took more shape he was still pretty fat and short though.

And now recent, I'm STILL drawing him, gah! (24yrs): Major feather head and has a leaner (more duck) body.

LASTLY (for now) a progression on my paintings. I started painting at around 16-17 and hardly took docs of the oldest stuff but I found a few in these folders!

Here is one of my oldest paintings 2001-ish: I really kind of embarrassed (gag!) by the quality on this, but it at least shows how they looked back then...notice the horrid lack of anatomy in that guy, the hand holding that axe all wrong, the lack of any perspective/depth, and the whole thing is almost all white paint :C and its tiny, only 2ftx3ft.

I liked how in 2004 I made this painting: it's about 4-5 in height...

Then this year 2009 I went back and actually redid it and its 7ft tall now: I think it's much better although I kind of miss the plugged wall things and more grotesque legs from the old one hmmm...

All of that was damn good. The animation you did in DOS was actually pretty amazing.
I gotta say tho, your paintings creep me out. ... a lot. But they're pretty fucking awesome.

anyway instead of just posting comparisons i decided to redraw some characters from a cancelled flash that was gonna come out after RC1. i didn't know anything and didn't have a tablet either!!! the flash in question was some sort of RPG 'parody' but rather than being affectionate it was more like a brutal assault on everything that makes them shit because i hate most of them. anyways i realised the idea was gay and the script was too long and i didn't have the skills to make it all without tweening into oblivion so into the 'dead' folder it went. the 'angry faic' on the guy's shield wasn't intentional i swear

original .fla is circa 2007, around winter so its pretty much two years. wow look at the medusa woman's titties!!

anyways i decided to go one step further and see if my colours had improved. success i guess. i'd have changed some of the designs if i did them now, especially the tifa/sakura girl, but i wanted to stick as close as possible to the original 'intention' if you get me.

i've also noticed some of the quirks i used to do are now gone. i think the 'swirly lines' thing has been replaced with 'sexy hair'.

plus my linework's a tad more loose and organic. it used to be really stiff and well not many of the characters on the top row look 'alive'. there's also a lack of balance in a lot of the poses and the snake girl doesn't make sense anatomy wise. i'm glad i didn't join tba in 2007 cos i'd have been ripped apart lmao
