QuoteGermany’s Interior Ministers are demanding that the government ban violent videogames before the elections at the end of September. A major part of their argument involves the effect games allegedly have on children. In their translated report they directly referenced the Winnenden shootings of Mar 11, where a 17-year-old gunman killed 15 people before taking his own life.

The Germans have always had it tough when it comes to censorship of games. For instance, in Carmageddon they had the dubious pleasure of mowing down hordes of robots instead of innocent pedestrians. However, there could be more serious consequences for German game developers such as Crytek, who are currently working on Crysis 2. Unless the sequel involves dishing out lollipops to naughty North Koreans, before spanking them on the bottom and sending them on their way, chances are the Ministers will take issues. This could even mean a total relocation for the developers, if the demands are met.

Video games dont kill people. My Halo 3 game disc does not shoot up schools.

I can see the effect its having on children, its allowing children to get away with violent crimes using cruddy excuses like "I saw it on DOOM" (ever heard of a free will?).

This new German law isnt going to do anything but piss off a lot of German gamers.

that\\\'s a pretty crude statement. i\\\'m sure in germany there are plenty of people who believe in freedom of expression and anti-censorship. you don\\\'t have to play games to be upset at this kind of government intervention.

these kinds of laws are steps into a government-controlled state where politicians can tell you what you can and cannot play, see, taste, touch, say, the list goes on.

Now that you mention it sorta does seem crude. I respect the government of Germany (and every other country) for trying to prevent violence and all that, but I dont think banning violent media is going to do anything. Violence is a unfortunate part of life that we just have to live with (they might as well excersise their totaltarian powers to censor life). Why dosent governments educate the public anymore, people in several other countries (including the U.S.) are trying to do the same meaningless thing.

Their cause is good, just not the way they're carrying it out.

do you guys really believe that a law like that would pass

a very few people in the parliament want this to happen, everyone else is like "fuck you".

Greenkitten

Banning it will do nothing, hardcore gamers will get chipped consoles and just download games. The sick ones that actually do shoot up people will still do it, but this time they'll blame Marilyn Manson again.

Violent people will still be violent no matter how much you deprive them of violent media.

in other news the german government has agreed to release videogames with references to nazis as long as there's a big motherfucking N on the cover right next to a swastika with an X over it

I just bought those and am playing them now.  Did you take advantage of the weekend deal?

Also laws like these blow goats and thankfully they haven't passed, yet.
