give your ideas on what the next important emphasis should be. currently we are focusing on articles on artists, flash animators, flash programmers, voice actors and flash groups.

anigentleman

you should focus on the sites

sheezyart
deviantart
newgrounds
ugoplayer
flashportal

anigentleman

you should also do musician and writer categories/templates

rtil

musicians and writers can wait for later, it would be stretching it too far at this point. people can add writing in their credits and most flash animators get their music from downloading mp3's.

W.A.C.

Maybe there can be more emphasis on flash animations.

rtil

individual animations, series and collabs, yes. this is where the whole 'notability' thing does come in to play, because people cant' be making articles about every single solitary cartoon they've done, it would be a mess.  we have to set up some kind of guidelines for WIP's and existing animations.

Maybe there can be a policy where a flash isn't allowed to have it's own wiki if nobody (besides it's creator) really cares about it. If a flash isn't very popular but has good animation and/or a good story, I see no harm in it having it's own wiki entry.

rtil

how do you judge something like 'nobody cares about it'? to some people, 5,000 views is a lot. to others 500,000. it's suggestive.

let's start it this way.

what cartoons should be allowed to have their own page? should we measure by views, awards, what? i want this to be fair, but at the same time i don't want something like three quarters of all of newgrounds cartoons being eligible for a page.

W.A.C.

Maybe it can be set it up where if some users believe an article isn't worthy enough, the article's creator has to state why he believes it deserves to remain. Then again, if the creator was on vacation and didn't have a chance to defend his article, that wouldn't be very fair. :/

rtil

Actually, i think that the author should not take part in that discussion, because he would be biased. if a panel of users can come together who were not involved in the creation of the article and make a group decision, that should be fair. we should still set up a page with certain criteria people should take the time to look at.

anigentleman

basing it on awards is a terrible idea. rule that one right the fuck out. keep in mind that newgrounds awards are more userpicked than anything else.

Daily 1-5 are based on the top 5 scoring entries which are USER VOTED. something that takes as small of effort as super mario bros z will always get a place up there because alvins fanboys will press 5 instantly before even watching, not because the movie is actually good

RCP and Underdog are similar to the Daily 1-5 except that there's only one of each and they are based on reviews. the same

if you base it off frontpages it's also a bad idea because it's only what tom likes or feels deserving of getting there

i say there should be three factors that decide whether a person is able to make articles about themselves and their movies

1. They take animation seriously and don't just make movies to get popular
2. Over a year of experience
3. They are at least MODERATELY GOOD and well deserving of the scores they got on ng

for #3 there needs to be some nonbiased talent judges or something

Quote from: rtilif a panel of users can come together who were not involved in the creation of the article and make a group decision, that should be fair.

that's what im talking about. perfect. i'd happily join something like this

W.A.C.

Even if something is very overrated, it might be a good idea to allow it on the site anyways if someone is willing enough to write an article about it.

anigentleman

why? most of the overrated shit is made by people who don't actually give a shit about animation in the first place, like Alvin Earthworm, Wonchop, Illwillpress, etc

i mean if someone is actually talented and gives a shit about it in the first place then they usually get what they deserve if not less

Even though their work is overrated, they're still fairly popular animators. Sure, it's almost disgusting how a flash movie like Super Mario Bros. Z Episode 1 can manage to have a score like 4.22 but it's not his fault a huge majority of his fans are dumbasses. I'll admit that I actually like his Super Mario Bros. Z flash series but it's definitely a very over rated flash series.

Quote from: anigentlemani mean if someone is actually talented and gives a shit about it in the first place then they usually get what they deserve if not less
True.

notorious

I think this website would be a great oppurtunity to get more quality artists in the know, something Newgrounds and other flash portal sites can't do, because since their fanbase is comprised mostly of people seeking only short entertainment and not animation quality, and since most of them don't actually animate often entries with artistic merit get left behind. If Anipedia chose to highly regard skill, originality, and stylish animations over others it might just be a great website.

anigentleman

like zwickel for example. shadow of the pennilian was very good in my opinion but it got a score around 15-20 points under a 4.

although zwickel is very talented, if that was the only movie on his whole newgrounds profile and you had to win an award to be featured on anipedia, zwickel wouldnt be featured even though he clearly deserves a spot.

on the other side of that, there are people who do win awards like Alvin Earthworm who should NOT in any way be featured because he isn't even an animator, just an average joe who ripped the DBZ storyline into videogame characters and moved around premade sprites.

im not saying sprite animators shouldnt be featured, i guess the custom spriting can be pretty challenging, but people who just take all of their graphics from other sites shouldnt be allowed

then even further on the other side there are people who don't get any awards and DO in fact suck ass. needless to say these people shouldnt get featured.

thinking over my three qualifications I came up with, I've found something better

1. They take animation seriously as a passion and animate with a reason other to get popular
2. I originally said at least a year experience was necessary, but there ARE some rare cases of people who have been animating for less than a year and are still better than some people than people who have been doing it for ages, and then more commonly, a person who's been doing it for years and since they didn't originally take it seriously and try to make anything good, are still terrible and pump out very lesser quality animations. cuz of them i think we should just not use this rule, but just consider it a good quality
3. Have made a cartoon or at least a piece of animation before that is considered good by some nonbiased judges (a Quality Control Team made of some Anipedia Mods/Admins?)

discarding things that are overrated AND suck obviously (WonChop, etc.)

What good would that do, not only is that dumb because theres no way to prove that you've been doing flash for that long, but what if someone was quite good but just never posted anything on the internet.
Obviously this isn't going to turn into NG with all kinds of halfassed things as some stupid joke, rather the screening process should be something that is hands on, denning people because there actually inexperienced rather than denning them because they have a high chance of being inexperienced would make more sense.

For instance: A board of trusted judges would be assigned like mods powers are assigned (showing that you would fit the job and being offered the position) and as things are submitted, they are reviewed and voted on "Y/N" if 70% of the board agreed by a date, then it would pass and go onto whatever would follow.

The good thing about the % system is that more judges could be assigned continuously to make the outcome more diverse.

EDIT: consider this a more complex version of your idea for the "quality control team" because i didn't read your last post (it's to damn long)

while shadow of the penillian may have been good, i'm not sure it deserves it's own page based on its own unfortunate circumstances.

since the encyclopedia is about animation, articles about sprite movies with no customs (and by customs i mean THEIR OWN CHARACTERS) will be generally discouraged, even to (and especially) the titans of the genre like alvin earthworm.

i'm not saying that a newgrounds award would be the all to end all of "featured" content on anipedia. i didn't say featured, i said merit for an article. and i would never use daily awards, as that would merit 5 new cartoons per day. underdog and rcp are irrelevant imo, and i'd only consider weekly awards. but it was a suggestion, i'd prefer views/reception (positive or negative) over awards.

on your 3 points:
1. suggestive. no one can be the judge of that under these circumstances
2. suggestive. i also am not turning this into a "who's better" competition
3. a "quality control" team, perhaps, but this goes without saying for the 'having made something'. i don't see the point in an animator even making an encyclopedia page about themselves if they have no work to display.

Quote from: W.A.C.Even if something is very overrated, it might be a good idea to allow it on the site anyways if someone is willing enough to write an article about it.
If someone wants to make an article about Alvin, fine. But the last thing I want is a diehard fan writing it. i want non-biased articles, and i only want straight facts. if it got praise, note its criticisms. most people make alvin out to be a god.

as far as a team goes, i don't think it should always be the same group of people. in fact, i'd welcome all members to take part in this voting process, in order to avoid corruption. if it was a small group of people, they could communicate off-site and plan things if they wanted. without that, it's open to all opinions except those directly involved in the creation of the article.

true, but i didnt say shadow of the penillian needed its own page. I'm saying if that was zwickel's only animation, even though he is clearly talented, it didn't get a good score or any awards so if it's awards you're basing being allowed to be featured, zwickel wouldnt be featured although HE clearly deserves it due to his talent

I do agree with your point about sprite movies not getting allowed in for that reason. I should contradict myself by saying we shouldnt let ANY spriters in here unless all the characters are their own original characters for that reason alone, besides the fact that the majority of spriters just rip their graphics from other sites

weekly awards are an interesting consideration, but i disagree with letting them be the decider. weekly awards are only judged by a movie's ability to sustain it's high score for a period of days. it's better than judging daily awards because there are some things that win daily awards that were made in like 4 hours (robot frogs for example, due to mass voting), but then again, there are movies like SMBZ intro and some of legendaryfrog's old shit that still has ridiculously high scores. plus there are plenty of things that don't win daily/weekly awards even though their movie could be better than everything won on that day.

in my opinion nothing newgrounds-based should decide what gets on here except perhaps that they released something that's deemed good by whoever ends up being part of the quality control team.

1. perhaps it would be better to base it on how much they've improved over the time they've been animating? I suppose you could say if someone gave a shit enough to improve a lot from the start of their animation career, then its obviously a passion, but since people are writing articles about themselves, they can judge it i guess
2. no, but my point was there is no second rule, im taking this one out due to the fact that its sort of irrelevant
3. i think it would have to be people that you trust (particularly people moderating the site) that should be able to rotate into it. they should also need to know what "good" flash is and can't have the mindset that animators like illwillpress and legendaryfrog are "good animators". the "at least 1 year experience" rule would apply to who gets to judge probably more than who gets featured. one of the biggest factors, is, they cannot be biased. if they have something against who's trying to get a page, it would be less likely a chance that they'd get in (like if i was judging on a day wonchop wanted to be featured on the site, it would be totally unfair to him because i would automatically vote no)
