So yeah I live in NorCal (one hour north of San Francisco) and you know it's definitely becoming a place of corruption. I don't want to get too into it, but I just want a different state or city that's more affordable... somewhere that's just really different, but also similar. I mean, the US in general is never too much different no matter where you go, but I want a different place that's cheaper to live in. Living here in Northern California, there are tons of people I know from Oregon and lots of people who praise Oregon here, and a lot of people say the people there are more laid back and whatnot. First I wanted to go to Texas because it's affordable and has some good universities, but I ruled that out because it's too far and I think Texas would get really boring, even if it does seem like a state with a booming economy.

So I know there's a quite few people here from the Pacific Northwest. What is Portland, OR like? I want a city that has a lot of good Asian restaurants in the area, a city that has stuff that usually caters to young people (a music venue around would be good), a decent community college... but what's really important is just a place with affordable living.

Is Portland good?  What about WA state?

Did anyone enter in the lottery tonight? It's 640 million, but unfortunately, I didn't win. I mean, imagine what you could do with 640 million dollars... Fuck my life.

But the winning lottery was from Baltimore, Maryland.

So my sister pointed this out. Seeing as the Trayvon Martin case has gotten a lot of attention nationwide and was believed to be a racially motivated incident, here in Northern California a 15-year-old has gone missing and she seems to be getting a lot of attention. Her purse and phone were found in different places and many fear that she is just dead, and yeah it's a really tragic and sad story but a lot of child abductions happen but it just seems like the more prettier, popular girls who get abducted get more attention. I was talking about this with a friend and we think it's unfair.

It's huge news, and there are searches being made everywhere for her, which is definitely what should be done.

..Nobody really cares because she isn't as popular and isn't a cheerleader... but she's still cute.


So I just find it weird how in America at least, this happens. My sister said in the state alone there's like at least 20 missing youth and one of them is the one girl I mentioned who is receiving a lot of attention, but the others who are in their early teens and pre-teens are not getting nearly as much attention. So what does the TBA community think of this? Totally unfair or that's just how our human mind really works?

What do people title you as in your community, or when you were in high school or in college now?

When I was in high school, some people just knew me as the "weird Asian kid who would breakdance in the quad sometimes during lunchtime when music was playing."

"COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  A University of Maryland honor student who warned on websites he was going to "kill enough people to make it to national news" was arrested after several people reported the threat to police, perhaps thwarting a campus rampage apparently planned for Monday, authorities said.

While the threat was dismissed by some online as harmless, a former student who used to work with campus police took it seriously and first called authorities Saturday night. By Sunday, authorities had set up surveillance on Alexander Song and arrested him on campus.

Song, a 19-year-old sophomore, was shaking and crying when he was taken into custody, campus police chief David Mitchell said.
"The best security we have is us looking after each other," Mitchell said. "And that's exactly what happened. Three people saw online postings and called us."
Song was not armed at the time of his arrest, and police did not find any weapons in his dorm room or his parent's home in Fulton, Md. Students and professors who knew him said there was no indication he was capable of violence.

Song was taken to a psychiatric hospital for an evaluation and suspended from the school. He faces a misdemeanor charge of disturbing school activities. Police did not know if he had an attorney and a working phone number for his parents number could not immediately be found.

The initial threat was posted on Reddit.com, a user-generated news website. Police said two more threatening posts were reported anonymously by people who were chatting with Song on Omegle.com, a website that enables one-on-one anonymous chats. In one of the chats, a person said he was going to call the police unless Song admitted that he was joking around, the police chief said.

Song responded by saying words to the effect of, "LOL. Go ahead. You don't even know what campus I'm talking about," the chief said.

Song also warned people to "stay away from the mall" on Monday, apparently alluding to a central lawn on campus.

Detectives traced the messages to a computer used by Song and arrested him on campus after setting up surveillance to track his movements.

Song was questioned about a week ago after police responded to Song's dormitory after a report of a man screaming, authorities said.

"He told us he was feeling a little stressed out. There was nothing that would lead us to believe that he was a threat to himself or others," Mitchell said. It's unclear exactly what was stressing Song out, police said.

Song was a member of a campus research program for select honor students who explore how science and technology relates with society, according to the university's website. The Gemstone Program lists Song as scheduled to graduate in 2014.

Song was one of the leaders of a student research team, Be Pure, that was studying ways to make methane gas safe for energy consumption, said James Wallace, a mechanical engineering professor and director of the Gemstone Program.

Steven Hutcheson, the team's advisor, said Song had once been one of the more vocal members of the team but had recently appeared quieter. Hutcheson and a couple students who knew Song said there was no indication that he was unhappy or capable of violence.

"I wish there had been something because I would have loved to have helped him," Hutcheson said.

Anjana Sekaran, another member of the Be Pure team, said she had known Song since last year, "and he is a very intelligent, good-natured individual. He would never hurt anyone."

In the rare occation that you do encounter the middle class, theres a very surpising amount of racism from the LA blue collar crowd. I know it mostly has to do with mexican gang related violence but jesus that made for a very uncomfertable one sided converstaion.   

Pretty much like my city, except we have more of the Nortenos, and they're crazy as hell. (I live in Northern CA) But the gang problem is nothing like LA, and the blue collar crowd here is fairly liberal, but they definitely don't really tolerate this gang banging shit.

LA is definitely a city that one is likely to struggle in, and if I were to struggle in somewhere, I wouldn't mind it being in LA. I mean, there's really nice weather there! (however, that can get boring sometimes) And there's a lot of stuff to do within Los Angeles County alone, and there's Disneyland and whatnot nearby. No wonder why there's so many homeless people down there..

there was a point in time i was interested in working at cartoon network. but then i met people who work there, and was reminded of how much i hate los angeles. that interest is long gone now. besides, i'm not an aspiring animator anymore, it's my career and i make a living off of it.

LA has a reputation of either being full of ghetto low-income people or Surenos (East and South Los Angeles), or materialistic people who drive fancy cars and work for the movie or television industry, who mainly live on LA's westside. I could understand why LA isn't the most likable city, and probably for those reasons. Plus the bad air quality and immense traffic.

just like the google images thread about that neighborhood, one fight video doesn't really give enough information on this place to make an accurate assumption about it. if this school is as fucked up as this video makes it out to be, it's because the kids there are fucked up, not necessarily just the fact that it's a predominately black school. i've been to a school like this for a week for testing and everyone was really chill

It's just a reflection of the city

yeah San Jose's pretty boss. Castro Valley I've never been to but I'm aware of the city, and from what I've heard it's really nice. it's right next to Hayward, which kind of has a ghetto rep and a lot of cholo kids/Nortenos and Surenos, and Pacific Islander gang bangers. A kid in my English class actually moved here from Hayward, and says it's a shithole.

Ever been to Oakland? It gets crazy there, but it's really beautiful and has some of the best weather in the country.

But what happens at the public schools there are pretty crazy. This is how shit went down at Oakland Technical High last May.

So I was thinking, what nationality do you think has the most difficult last names to pronounce? Like the ones you're most likely to mispronounce.

I thought that it had to be no other than Laotian people's last names. All of them have last names like Konekhamsompnou or  Oubonlamphanh. I actually know of a kid who is of Lao descent and has a last name like one of those but much longer. But some Thai have ever longer and more complicated last names. Imagine what it's like to have their name called out on the first day of school lmao..

Any fans of the rapper dumbfoundead? Dumbfoundead is none other than 26-year-old Jonathan Park. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his mom moved him and his sister up to Mexico and then L.A., in the Koreatown area, where Dumb has lived ever since. So ESPN released an article regarding Jeremy Lin today, and the article's headline was "Chink in the Armor." Of course, chink in the armor is a phrase many people use, and the word "chink" is a derogatory term for Asian people. Some say it wasn't intentional of ESPN to have used the term chink and have a pun/play on words with the word chink and the phrase chink in the armor, referring to Jeremy Lin's ethnicity. Jeremy has faced some instances of racism while in his performance of basketball games, but some say this is where it hit the line.

Me being Asian (50%), I was not necessarily totally offended, but I feel like all my fellow yellow people around the world are going to gather up against the ESPN HQ's doorstep as a massive group with torches and pitchforks, all having knowledge of kung fu, all super pissed.

This neighborhood is in a city that was among one of the most dangerous places to live in in the United States, and this city has some of the poorest quality school districts in America, but does this really look all that bad?

i used to live in mesquite, texas, and i spent two years living in york, pennsylvania. now i live in san jose. as far as traveling, i've been to canada and mexico when i was a kid, though i don't remember them very well. i've also been to new york (not new york city, some very rural part of new york), georgia, oklahoma, and maine. i haven't done a lot of sight seeing in the US, but i'd like to. and i'd really like to visit another country

I live in Santa Rosa, about 50 minutes or so north of the Golden Gate. Not a whole lot up here, kinda the more "quiet" part of the Bay Area. The "ghettos" here are well... wannabes.

I was in San Jose three weeks ago at my uncle's place in Santa Clara, close to San Jose city limits. The "Koreatown" area/Stevens Creek (all the Korean restaurants and stores). It's pretty awesome.
