I wish I didn't look at RottenTomatoes recently enough to remember CWC's half brother exists (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/critic/cole-smithey/) and he runs a website entitled "The Smartest Film Critic in the World (http://www.colesmithey.com/) and most of his Youtube videos have under 100 views (https://www.youtube.com/user/colesmithey/videos) and most of the sad, dumb adults/therapists I know say I should go into film criticism.

Billing himself as "The Smartest Film Critic in the World," (a title that esteemed film critic Roger Ebert once mocked) Cole regularly posts his reviews to YouTube, but his videos have hilariously low view counts, rarely more than a few hundred per video and sometimes not even more than a few dozen, even on reviews of well-known films. Whatever the reason, this means that, ironically, the various videos Chris posted to YouTube over the years were literally many thousands of times more popular than those of his theoretically more successful brother.

This is my second time making (and obligatory eating of) PB&J.
I had it with sliced banana this afternoon. Right now, I wanna trim off the crust to see what all the hype was of soft bread and good PB&J as a kid.
No bananas in this serving. I'm eating it right now. Sliced it down the middle. No toasted bread.
This makes me cry. Good stuff.

I get kinda of sad when I see people fill the artistic gaps that I feel like I saw before them, but I didnt because I didn't want to try hard enough to learn how to beat them to punch, I guess. It's like they're saying it before me, theyre defining what's inside me, this generation. I think I have that seasonal thing Yvonne was talking about earlier. It feels like a post teen mid life crisis. Whatever it is it's got me learning guitar and writing poetry and working harder than I ever have. I thank and I fear it and want to kill it. Sorry. I hope I can articulate it artistically someday before someone else does. In my heart I know people feel the same.
That kind of depression/pain sometimes fuels the best kind of artistic creativity/escapism.
What, might I ask, is this generation defining? It seems like we're too busy commenting on stuff to say anything original. There isn't a single work of fiction or art I feel has even come close to capturing the zeitgeist of the 21st century. The entire millennium is up for grabs.

if thats the case that gives me hope. even if it aint the case thats not a bad mentality to have perhaps.
for what its worth the things ive consumed recently that i feel sum up the current gen it would be garden of delete by oneohtrix and car seat headrest (kinda). maybe these are poor answers cuz theyre kinda niche but they blew my mind

I don't know if I agree with that. 2001: A Space Odyssey came out a year before we faked the moon landing you know, Serial Experiments Lain a year before Y2K. We shouldn't deprive ourselves deciding what's important and God save us if it's Undertale.
i think car seat headrest defines what it feels like to grow up 'weird' in the 21st century. nervous, self-glorifyingly shy, downloading music, talking to friends on the internet all night. every time i've heard a contemporary artist try to summarize what it's like to grow up i find it pretty contrived and condescending ("We are the New Americana" or "We Are Young") and it rarely gets into the specifics of life like car seat does. i think it shows that modern music has the potential to be about current modern things that matter (that aren't necessarily about the rights/oppression of black people, heh
maybe what im trying to say is that there are things about this era that music hasnt fully explored (fetishes, forum discussions, online dating, idk heh) maybe that's a little exciting to me.
i dont really enjoy my own answer personally, i guess i need to think of better answers. sorry. neither of thse artists are really era defining a nirvana sense, i just feel like theyre doing relatively newish things (car seat's modern lyrical focus, for oneohtrix he has this post-electronic dance music aesthetic, he sounds like hes making new genres on his new album alot of the time heh) and i hope people follow them. ok, none of this answer was good. goodbye!
on second thought, i think that death grips would also be an acceptable answer. they're sort of the first 'meme band', which is a pretty modern thing

Well yes those are definitely things any serious musician/writer/filmmaker worth their salt would be trying to explore. I also lament their virtual absence. Those things are hard to make into narratives though because there's very little element of physicality and meatspace is generally where people have sex and get killed, hence most cyberpunk blends reality with the virtual. There should be a more streamlined approach that more closely resembles contemporary netizenship. A few works I think have gotten close but this is subjective.

i know how cringy it sounds and death grips might not have the most eloquent commentary on the times but in terms of basically being the first meme band (in the well intentioned beloved way not the smash mouth way) that's a pretty new, neat 21st century 2010 thing. i can understand if someone is repulsed by that idea tho
i am writing some songz because i have heard enough times that if you dont like whats out there, you best do something about it boyo.

bonus thought: im scared of irony.
But honestly how are they the first meme band? What even is a meme band? Do you mean first band largely popularized by /mu/ during its heyday? Do you mean meme band as in "Using the genre it operates in as a reference point (meme) to explore sonic textures and song structures not traditionally associated with it, or to take it to absurdist conclusions," because in that case any of the bands I posted would fill that qualification. If you're defining meme more traditionally then literally every band is a meme band because memes compose the totality of human culture.
Having sex and getting killed are the two most dramatic things that can happen to an individual, and they can't happen online as of yet, hence the reason most web-themed fiction like .hack, SAO, Neuromancer etc. make it a physical space where those things can happen in some form. I think there should be a way to write about the internet without doing this, or making it boring like the alt-lit scene is wont to do. That's all I meant
I think Sweet Trip gets close to sonically representing the internet even if their lyrics aren't about it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSRVyQ1gfLM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSRVyQ1gfLM)
And most every glitch/microhouse album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lyd9PwXM-A8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lyd9PwXM-A8)
And every vaporwave track ever if only because the genre wouldn't exist without it.
I honestly think about what you're talking about every single day and have been since 2012.
i think they're a meme band in the sense theyve been sensationalized due to the weirdness and just like, the pure aggression that they give off with their music. i think the reason they ARE a meme band at all is because of the pure shock value of what they do. and i can't think of a band that's done that since uhhh. nirvana i guess? does that make sense? am i still failing to grab you? that's what i mean. they're the 'internet age meme' band.
im trying to think of things to write about when it comes to the internet and i feel they would be about feely stuff like making friends with someone while trying to imagine what they look like, or something. another one is seeing artists you know and admire making stuff and getting jealous of how they're filling a void youre not trying hard enough to fill. i dont know, like all stuff it has to come from a source of frustration, love, admiration, whatever. and through conversations with other people, probably. i feel like thats an underrepresented source of inspiration. if you have a funny ass conversation with a friend and if it makes you laugh there is probably something there. you just have to try. i feel like this thread is a group diary, it's pretty cool. i hope you're having a good day, bamyasi.
i think its ok to write about the dorkier nichier sides of internet age life if its funny and it comes from a source of desperation. idk, if you wanna write a song about trying to make it as an internet artist or whatever then there are a lot of things you could talk about that wouldnt work as standalone songs imo (like idk using discord or something)
i also had a thought earlier i wonder how long itll take before shitposting becomes common lingo. thats the kind of shit that scares me and maybe those fears of internet culture would work in the context of a song
what if sam hyde becomes a household name we would have seen it from the very beginning
wouldn't a meme band be, well, a band that is better known for a meme than being a band? like songs that became memes and transcended their creators - 'never gonna give you up', 'never come down', 'call me maybe', etc.
i don't listen to nor do i even like death grips with the exception of one song but there's nothing shocking about what they're doing and afaik there's hardly anyone imitating them to the degree or impact nirvana had on the music world.
Looks like death grips isn't as memetacular as I hope, although there are songs by them that are kinda memey (that takyon song). I would still argue that they're doing something unique and special during this era, though. Glitchy songs about technology and government distrust are relevant to me but i guess theyre not nirvana level. Maybe someday but I wonder if they're too extreme for mainstram. Some other artist is more likely to water their style down and popularize it. Is there any music you find yourself shocked by
i've never really paid attention to death grips lyrics so i'll have to take your word for it. nirvana was the epicenter of grunge, a genre and counterculture that spread not unlike a meme from seattle in the 90's. it met all the qualifications of memetics before the term was ever uttered in the context we use it in today. death grips probably isn't as digestible to your average person as nirvana is or was in most respects so i don't think the same thing could happen with them, but their music certainly is different in that it mixes two genres that generally don't mix.
the only thing that's ever shocked me is that people would willingly go to concerts where they would probably be injured - namely HANATARASH's early shows in the 80's that centered around mixing destruction with live music, which included things like chainsaws, smashing walls and throwing debris and miscellaneous shit into the audience. of course this is an outlier, your average injury at a concert involves getting your shit pushed in in a moshpit or something. and while i don't find those shocking i do find them kind of stupid. i never liked them personally.

Quote from: Our resident JRPG aficionado Sam BrooksCut to 20 years later and the JRPG is no longer really a thing. Final Fantasy XV, the game intended to save the once titanic Final Fantasy franchise, skewed so far towards the open world and side-quest driven tropes that litter Western RPGs that it was more Dynasty Warriors than it was Final Fantasy. The things that made JRPGs special, the things that made the genre stand out like the Lynchian design or the almost Korean soap opera tonal shifts, were nowhere to be seen. Final Fantasy XV seemed to announce that the JRPG was, if not dead, irreparably changed.
From the moment the game begins, you feel like you're settling into something iconic. It's like Aerith walking out of the alleyway in Final Fantasy VII, the blitzball game in Final Fantasy X or hell, any Final Fantasy opening. You're thrown into an anime cutscene, and then you're escaping across chandeliers in casinos. The lighting wants to give you a seizure, the music is Engrish jazz and the design choices are insane. Persona 5 announces. I have arrived. I am important.
There's a lot of gameplay elements to cover in Persona 5, like the fact that hanging out with people in the game powers you up in battle or that you collect monsters (the titular Personas) like Pokemon and then cut off their heads in a guillotine in order to fuse them together into more powerful monsters. But honestly you guys, it's a JRPG.
It's an honest-to-God JRPG where you sit down and play for 50 hours. Where you get into random, turn-based battles. Where you walk three seconds from one cutscene into another. Where the characters talk in poetic and iffily translated Japanese. Where the boys are prettier than the girls. Where the plot, no matter what, is actually secretly about friendship.
And even better than that? It's a great one. There's a momentum to Persona 5, a drive to keep you playing, to make friends with that disgrace politician because he'll teach you how to be better at speeches which will make you better at winning Personas over to your side. It's a momentum that a lot of JRPGs lacked, and it's probably part of what killed the genre. But Persona 5 makes you want to cancel meetings, cut friends out of your life, and stop eating.
And even better, and more shockingly? Persona 5 is about something. I'm only 15 hours in, and there's already been a shockingly mature and developed plotline about systemic abuse that I never expected from a video game, let alone an RPG. The game, sometimes a bit too obviously, is about teenage rebellion and what place that has in society. It's something that's more relevant in Japan, but even if you don't know a lot about Japanese society (and why would you), there's an honesty to the way that these characters deal with trauma that's rare in a videogame.
This man has never played a JRPG that wasn't Final Fantasy.

You mean to tell me that seeing songs being destroyed by nightcore

Yesterday I had coffee with a bunch of recently graduated college educated liberal yuppies I knew from high school.
Never have I interacted with such a sleepy, boring, dispassionate group of people. It's almost as though these institutions are run by vampires. No wonder they're bending over for their southern invaders. Tried getting them to discuss politics and current events but they all "preferred not to think about it."
I mean if they're all like these the culture war is as good as won but goddamn is this a difficult lot to want to save.
with the ever-growing prevalence of the internet, i'd say the supposed "culture war" you're talking of has less to do with location and more with shared ideas via viral media
they're all probably wiped from complaining about things on tumblr until the wee hours
Oh yeah no doubt. It's just they mostly went to universities or small liberal arts colleges in New England and I can't shake the feeling that had something to do with it. They were so full of life when I last saw them five or so years ago.
And you say the culture war mostly happens online and you're right, but then stuff like this (https://twitter.com/AngeloJohnGage/status/853409222729629696)[1] (https://twitter.com/shane_bauer/status/853353232151609344) and HWNDU happens.

It's incredibly stupid but they really did say it to their face faggot not online and saw what happened.
is antifa good at anything besides smashing windows and ganging up on people wearing hats they don't like
I would never invoke my
actual political opinions in a conversation with old friends for risk of mortifying them or ruining our friendship, but I was at the very least interested in their perception of the world from a recently graduated college educated liberal yuppie point of view. They still presumably knew me as a liberal and general relativist and I'm surprisingly good at flying under the radar with my opinions. Maybe they saw through me. Their only clue that I was no longer one of them was my not having gone to college and being a fair sight poorer than them.
Scenes like the one at Berkeley I think arise due to a lack of willingness to have meaningful dialogue, combined with irreconcilable differences in life experience and probably aesthetics.

Yeah I didn't really make my position clear. That's an accurate assessment I think though. A lot of alt-right rhetoric was born on humor websites in the first place.
Got any stories of people letting their political freak flags fly and ruining friendships?

Related and also topical. Gwoemul is about a monster that attacks Seoul and kidnaps a man's daughter, but the media are too busy creating hysteria over a virus outbreak to bother reporting on it.
