only one day and it's up to $43k. smells like victory

reaching the stretch goal of big band would be awesome. he's cool, i even got to color him for his npc animation.

they had a falling out with their original publisher and i'm pretty sure there was a lawsuit involved that didn't go in their favor. regardless they're an independent company now (lab zero) and they need support to keep their game going forward

for the lazy
Quote
Last June, much of the Skullgirls development team was laid off. This had nothing to do with the game or its sales; Skullgirls' financial support was simply cut off as a result of a costly legal battle that was strangling our publisher, Autumn Games. These ongoing legal difficulties kept Autumn from being able to continue its support for the game. We always had big plans for Skullgirls, and hoped to keep growing the game and its community with new characters and game updates, but without funding, these plans unfortunately had to wait.

While we've been able to continue working on the patch and have recently made progress on the PC version with Autumn's help, neither of these has been able to pay our extremely talented and dedicated art staff. So, in many ways, this campaign is also a last-ditch effort to keep the Skullgirls team together, working on the game we love so.

$175k and counting
we basically have the entire duration of the fundraiser to reach stretch goals now. it took less than 24 hours for squigly to be funded

Until this moment I had no idea rtil worked on skullgirls. This is one of the most incredible, and disgustingly sad, moments of my life. I actually watched that guy from his beginnings until not that long ago, then got engaged and stopped caring about anything at all, then was left by fiancee and continued to not care about anything at all, then met this other chick and cared about her and then got engaged again.... we'll see how that one ends... wait what was I saying?.... oh yeah anyway, I grew up with this guy and he's helped to create one of the greatest contemporary games and also helped to inspire me to take up art again and all the while I had no idea. History rhymes and shit,

i had difficulty following that post
Title: Re: Skullgirls DLC fundraiser
Post by: MRat on February 27, 2013 07:08 AM
you inspired me once and for a long time, but i got distracted by other things and lost track of what you were up to and really stopped being an artist of any sort. id been really interested in skullgirls for ages though, and then played it not that long ago and thought it was so fantastic, and the art so engaging, that I actually wanted to start drawing and writing and blah blah blah, so I did. then i came here and registered again after not having been around for four years to discover that you yourself were in part responsible for the urge to come back. it's neat like a little circle. or a mark twain quote.

discovering you worked on skullgirls, therefore, was something of a miracle in a coincidence for me.
it's also disgustingly sad because it just goes to show how much of a lazy apathetic slob I've been for four years.

jesus christ, I scrolled down the page quickly to see what the last few posts were and I had to look at this picture twice (without reading your text) to figure out whether it was concept art for another stretch-goal Skullgirl character or not.
Upon realizing that it was not I was disappointed.

it doesn't feel any different. it is unlikely i will ever be working directly with him anyway as he is simply another contract animator just like myself

i already knew he was on the project anyway

i'm surprised that is considered news to any gaming "journalism" site

yes, that article is stupid

but zone is not cool, he's a waste

and hiring him to work on a project like skullgirls

it's like casting ron jeremy in a movie that isn't about his ten-foot dick

as previously stated, i had little interest in this game to begin with beyond maybe picking it up on sale on steam if it had multiplayer

now i'd rather just pirate it to spite them because fuck zone and everyone who works with him

even if you don't like his stuff, he's actually a good animator. and, he's very good at working in the style he's needed to. they wouldn't have hired him if he couldn't do that , because you have to take an animation test in order to get in. a lot of people dont' make it past that phase
Title: Re: Skullgirls DLC fundraiser
Post by: sev on March 21, 2013 07:09 PM
the way he makes his paycheck doesn't detract in the slightest from him being a fine artist and animator. also comparing an animator getting an animation job to a pornstar acting in a normal film is way too obtuse a comparison.

it will have multiplayer on steam though for the record

actually, the pledges were for people contributing towards the creation of the characters. and it's 5, not 4. squigly, big band, robo-fortune, and two fan-voted characters which people who donated get to choose.

if you just want the new characters, anyone can get them all for free for the first 3 months of their release. the base game is only $15.

the $829k in donations goes exclusively towards development - paying the extremely talented group of programmers and artists that make the game. whether you like or dislike the game, you can't argue with the fact that it has an extremely passionate and supportive fanbase, and for good reason

I had some disposable income lying around and wanted all of the donator rewards up to that point. Call me a sucker, but knowing my money goes to paying talented people like MikeZ and rtil doesn't sound that retarded to me. Richer people pay more money to dumber forms of art than this.

never thought a big ol dev team like the one for skullgirls could lose a sale over one person's involveme-

You're very good at it, for someone who's "not trying", but then again you're 16 so that's cool. But ohhh nooo my life is over, I'm just gonna quit everything now based on your insightful and intelligent feedback.
oh

anyways, sure, he's dedicated his career to drawing naked anime characters getting fucked by tentacles- but i think you're under the assumption that since zone does hentai, he must have had loli in the mix; or at the least he's done hentai involving zone-tan (which is supposed to be based off of his daughter i think), yet he's done neither of those things.

why is stanley so popular?
Title: Re: Skullgirls DLC fundraiser
Post by: Gilthwixt on April 15, 2013 08:52 AM
Hmm...now I'm unsure. It might be Minette over Panzerfaust.

Anyway, Stanley is popular because of his theoretical gameplay description.

QuotePlaystyle Speculation
Uses a variety of shark-themed attacks and high-tech weaponry. Shark Dive! Shark Knuckle! Science Upper! FEEDING FRENZY! Be sure to check your work.

In addition to shark themed attacks such as biting, diving, lunges, and even under-the-earth dives, Stanley would have a surprisingly solid boxing stance. He's something of a sports nerd; a fan of boxing and hockey. He'd also use his advanced ASG arsenal from his Lab 4 days to his advantage. This could include various laser guns, missiles, or something akin to Iron Man's Proton Cannon. He may even have laser skates or...a jetpack!

Gameplay Inspiration
Captain Kidd (World Heroes 2), Street Sharks, Slayer (Guilty Gear XX #Reload), Richard Feynman (physics!), Iron Man (Marvel vs. Capcom series), Cyclops (Marvel vs. Capcom series), Gordon Freeman (Half-Life series)

Come on, Science Upper? Proton Cannons? Street Sharks?! It sounds pretty hype if you ask me. There's a lot of potential for whacky attacks and catchphrases, which would easily set him apart from the entire cast. The fighting game community eats that shit up.

BIONIC ARM!!!!!!!!!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwWLfY920Bk#ws)
Flo Rida - "Whistle" UMVC3 Parody - "Foot Dive (The Doctor Doom Song)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2Nz3eo57vQ#ws)

And of course Ego Raptor's Pound Cake video.

that world is somewhat unfamiliar to me, so i don't know. also, to me, visual appeal comes first before anything, for two reasons - i am a visual person since i'm an artist, and i'm actually going to be working on these characters, so i want them to be ones that i like. i'm sure no matter who is picked, the attacks chosen to be made will be cool, but i definitely have my favorites. two of them didn't make it this round so i'm a little disappointed. but i think out of the top 8 stanley is visually the least interesting.

i went for minette and aeon because i like their designs best. minette just overall looks really cute, and aeon is both really important to the storyline and has a really cool playstyle concept (hypothetical post-skullgirls characters from alternate timelines? that would be fucking awesome if done right). i didn't notice it at first, but i think the idea of a girl with an ACTUAL HOURGLASS for a body is pretty fucking clever. and yeah i also would prefer to animate both of those characters, if we already have Big Band to work on, i'd prefer to go back to drawing cute girls afterward and not something like panzerfaust

i'm surprised umbrella didnt even make top 8 though

i know the game is called skullgirls, but am i the only one who thinks it's really weird to have only one male character in it? strange that he's singled out like that. i was hoping for brain drain and ottomo, sad they didn't make it. i honestly don't like beowulf at all, but isaac is cool and i'll gladly vote for him.

I suppose that's true. But then again, Arcana Hearts has been going on for 3 games now. But that game is heavily Japanese orientated and mostly appeals to the target audience. I think it was only released on the PS3 here in the USA.

I suppose that's true. But then again, Arcana Hearts has been going on for 3 games now. But that game is heavily Japanese orientated and mostly appeals to the target audience. I think it was only released on the PS3 here in the USA.

I think there might be all of 10 serious Arcana Hearts players in the entire US.

I'm sure there's a small but dedicated fanbase, but you never see Arcana Heart at major fighting game tournaments.

Judging from those numbers I'm kinda sad. It seems that during round 1 a lot of people included Isaac in their top four but not in their top 3. That, or annie/minette fans rallied and pushed him from the #2 spot.

And if in round 2 Beowolf only won because of minette hater's spite votes, why couldn't they at least have voted Isaac ;_;

i was watching the most recent mega64 podcast the other day and they had some girl on named muriel who said she was one of the animators on skullgirls and that she was working on big band, and i was all hey wow maybe she knows rtil but also skullgirls has so many animators holy shit. i can't believe how many people they need to animate just one character.
Title: Re: Skullgirls DLC fundraiser
Post by: rtil on August 3, 2013 03:15 AM
her name is mariel cartwright aka kinuko (http://kinucakes.tumblr.com/), and she is the lead animator on the project. she is the one who predominantly sends out assignments to people, and she also does most of the key poses.
Title: Re: Skullgirls DLC fundraiser
Post by: sev on August 3, 2013 07:04 AM
mariel's really talented and nice. it's pretty awesome how she manages to get that much work done for SG and also corresponds with 20+ animation contractors and answers everyone's questions and stuff. i know she does work with wayforward and on cryamore too, kinda blows me away that she can do so much

oh cool so you guys do actually know her. thats really cool, i was wondering how they got all of the characters to look the same style and have so much consistency with so many different animators, but I guess when you have a talented person organizing everything, making character sheets/doing key poses it will all come together nicely. also wow that's really impressive that she is able to organize all of those animators around one project.

that's part of it, but the other thing is that alex ahad designed every single character (bar some npc's hanging out in the background in future maps), so everything in this universe is done in his style.

It's going to be incredibly difficult for you unless you map your keyboard to resemble a Hitbox (the fighting game controller I use). Map left to 'a', down to 's',  right to 'd', and up to 'space', then just roll your fingers across asd and end it with your thumb hitting space.

Here's a video of how it works. You won't be able to do slides because it's a keyboard, but you should be able to do the 360, and that's all you'll need in Skullgirls.

skullgirls is going to arcades in japan thanks to studio French Bread - their game "Under Night In-Birth" will feature Filia as celebration of Skullgirls releasing in Japanese arcades through the NESiCAxLive digital distribution system. as for the change in art style here, they are actually drawing all the Filia sprites themselves for their game
