name things you've kind of liked despite a quality that usually gives said thing a bad rep or makes it a widely considered (at least on some level) "shameful" thing to like - qualities might be something like a really bad fanbase or something else that tends to ruin it for a lot of other people
i thought avatar: the last airbender was good
i also haven't played this in a long time and don't know how i'd feel about it if i played it now or if it was ever actually good, (i'd need to replay) but i thought kingdom hearts wasn't a bad game and liked it when i played it. the fanbase is really naruto-tier though
Liking an anime like Clannad, cause the last thing I thought I'd watch was a moe blob show. But it's definitely cute and the characters grow on you.
i like the bands mindless self indulgence, boston, coldplay, tool, coheed and cambria, radiohead, every time i die, incubus, system of a down, and green day. there's something about these bands that makes it embarrassing to admit that i like them. when people find out i like said band, my next sentence begins with "yeah, i like them but....."
i like cassettes. they have such a bad rep but i really like them. i like the way they look, how they sound, and etc. it's part nostalgia and aesthetic appeal. and they're analog.
i like all of they might be giants' albums, from their first to their most recent. most people started thinking they were boring after "apollo 18", when they got a band to back them up, but i love all of their records regardless.
i still think the flying spaghetti monster is funny, even though most people on the internet are really sick of the joke by now
also donnie darko, free jazz, burritos, inspiration point, fork balloon sports, cards in the spokes, automatic biographies, kites, kung fu, trophies, banana peels we've slipped on and egg shells we've tippy toed over
FSM is cool because it's a big fuck you to religious bias in schools and fags who whine about global warming but don't understand it
MSI makes funny music sometimes, coldplay is cool, radiohead can be cool? system of a down has an ok track or two but the gayest fans ever
i like playing terran in starcraft even though two thirds of the people who play the game whine about terran being overpowered so there
martial arts movies, pearl jam, sonic adventure 2, 'chill out music' like those stupid buddha bar compilation CDs, tenacious D, funk, j-rock
i liked the watchmen movie. it's the only good thing zach snyder's ever done. the direction was odd in places (slow motion fight scenes) but i thought it was a solid film and a much more faithful adaptation than we could have ended up with. it was never going to do for superhero films what the source material did for comics, so i'm glad they had some fun with it
i have a soft spot for dragon ball z even though anyone without nostalgia for it probably thinks it is complete garbage. this goes for a lot of things though
i don't get why you put avatar as potentially shameful, it was really well received and generally recognized as something with actual time and effort into it - unless it's the whole 'americanime' thing or season 3 (which was really badly paced) that you're talking about.
etemon was cool but aside from that digimon was GAY AS HELL DAWG

yeah fsm is cool in principle, but there are just a lot of annoying people who never shut up about it and i don't like being associated with them really
i've only heard one msi album but i do enjoy it, though most of the time if i meet someone who likes them, MSI is the only band that we both like. i don't relate to their fanbase much. coldplay is cool but they've made so much bad music, their new album, that album x&y, etc, that when i say i like them i have to classify that it's only their first two albums. i don't like saying i like radiohead because they're the most over-hyped band in the world. if i talk to someone who worships them i usually get into a conversation about how "amazing" they are, and if i talk to someone who hates them i have to get into a conversation about how radiohead is over-hyped, makes stupid electronic music (most of these people liked radiohead as a rock group more than what they did with "kid a" and later) and how i'm a tool for liking them. system of a down and tool both have in general terrible fanbases. tool fans are like fans of rush and dream theater, they think that something isn't good music unless it's in a wacky time signature or is otherwise incredibly difficult to play. system of a down fans are just system of a down fans. i like system, especially their first record, but really. they aren't THAT good. rhyming "die" with "sky" and "high" a hundred times in every song doesn't make you a good lyricist. serj and daron have cool voices and they were really inventive with the whole crossover of metal and middle eastern music (although mr. bungle had been doing that for a while), but that's it.

haha. i know a few people like this, judging songs purely on technicality. my friend once made me sit through a 30 minute long dream theater track, insisting that they were the modern pink floyd, and i can barely remember anything interesting happening aside from tempo changes, time signatures that only 3 other people have even bothered using and guitar wankery.
i mean i just like a lot of band's music, i'm not as picky as i used to be with bands. it shouldn't be bad to like any band but people always associate your personality with what kind of music you like. for me they're pretty separate. i like jazz but i'm not an old person, i like some underground hip hop but i'm not some ghetto ass kid. so i don't know why it seems like if i opt to liking bands like tool and king crimson, people start to think i'm one of those guys who only likes prog, who only likes music that is complex, etc. this happens a lot. people shouldn't be so quick to judge
Came in here to defend digimon. When youre 10, that show is awesome, but its awesomeness did not scale with age. :|
System of a down does have a terrible terrible fanbase. I was a minor fan before the 3rd album and i could not bring it up in conversation without somebody going all uncomfortably crazy.

I guess I could say I'm somewhat embarrassed by my growing Transformers collection, but they're great for stop motion.
Well, I guess I'm another one of those to say anime that doesn't contain torrents of blood or other forms of those things that are considered "manly" by the broad masses... It's a mix of shame and joy, even though I know that no one's watching.

Actually, I think that these little pieces served as a form of comedic entertainment rather than being used as masturbation material...
Back then, it was a way to break the taboos, directed at a rather small underground audience who enjoyed the extraordinary, while today's consumption and production of drawn porn(erotic art in general reaches far beyond that and is way more popular, therefore I think it's hardly comparable.

I personally think that most people who visit places like these regularly have a somewhat biased opinion when it comes to topics like hentai.
It is a familiar concept that most of internet regulars have grown up with and have either come to tolerate or to enjoy, simply because of its high occurrence in the internet in general. It definitely feels more aesthetic than actual porn because it is completely based on imagination and not limited by certain factors, no one was harmed or defiled in its production and it is more appealing to our imagination as it is a simplified concept of reality. The most important point is that art can destroy or simply leave out the flaws that bother us about reality and that especially applies in this area.
On the other hand, drawn material that attempts to have an erotic appeal does seem awkward for those who don't get in contact with it on a regular base.
For hentai, especially certain mannerisms of the anime/manga style (way too big eyes, wacky hair colors, extremely simplified noses, mouths etc.) may seem weird to those people and the thought that someone has erotic feelings for a fictional creation with an extremely simplified depiction of a humanoid body might definitely be considered abnormal for people who see it as an alien concept.
And then there are people like Sinitron who generally prefer cartoons over anime and who would have to try to find their equivalent counterparts in the universe of American cartoon porn or other, in his case more vintage areas and I can understand why that experiment usually fails as the abstraction on this level is even bigger and makes the entire concept seem like a joke rather than anything else.
Anyway, I can understand why someone who generally dislikes anime would find the thought of masturbating to an anime-styled piece of art more than just weird, but I refuse to believe that even these people, provided that they regularly browse the internet, have never come across a single work as the one mentioned above that gave them at least some erotic thoughts or feelings...
whenever people make fun of someone for something they enjoy, it always seems to stem back to some sort of insecurities they have as a person. ridicule is a weakness, and i feel sorry for those who feel the need to point out the flaws in everyone else as if they are some authority on what is acceptable and what isnt. there is nothing wrong with or nothing to be ashamed of enjoying what you do so long as it doesnt harm anyone else, and there's nothing more to it
there's a difference between doing something you enjoy and telling the world about it
yeah, i think people can enjoy whatever they want and that's fine
but it's how they go about enjoying it that sometimes deserves being pointed out as stupid or terrible (see: nudestuck)

that's why the reasoning doesn't make any sense - the popular belief that if i don't understand the way someone else thinks, it's wrong, weird or threatening to me in some way.
everyone has their own preferences for all kinds of things, including what turns them on, whether it be different fetishes or visual appetites. i dont understand people that have, for example, a foot fetish. but i'm not going to judge someone because they like something i dont. that's their thing and that's ok with me.
even further, something like furry porn grosses me out. but i'm not going to walk up to a furry artist and tell them that. what good is that going to do? they put their stuff out there and it's there for a certain audience. if you don't like it, don't look at it.

there's a difference between doing something you enjoy and telling the world about it
no shit, what does that have to do with anything
basically nobody needs to know what kott and magyar yank their unwashed foreskins to, and if they do decide to share it i would damn fucking well tell them to fuck off and call them fags without any insincerity or insecurity because it is really something that nobody needs or even wants to know
nobody uses the word "fag" unless they are insecure/insincere.
that's a pretty general statement, don't you think?

cracker, white trash, white devil, uhhh probably dozens more, i know i'm a 'fjordmonkey' for example (which sounds fucking STUPID)
Not really. The problem with these ones is that a black person could say them in public without causing the same shitstorm as a white guy, saying, writing or even hinting at the word "nigger", even if it is clearly meant in an unserious or ironic way while it works perfectly fine the other way around.
Of course white people have never gone through slavery, oppression and exploitation based on their etnicity but that lies way back...
Quote from: Sinitron on February 4, 2012 09:08 PM
you're a kraut btw
Damn right I am!
The Brits would also sometimes refer tu us as "the Huns" due to Germany's imperialistic megalomania but I don't really consider either of these terms insultung and they also don't have as much of a nice ring to them as "nigger" does. Fjordmonkey sounds lame as well.

you can't really say a lot to offend a white guy. at least there's nothing really i can think of.

http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/05/28/101-being-offended/ (http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/05/28/101-being-offended/)
QuoteNaturally, white people do not get offended by statements directed at white people. In fact, they don't even have a problem making offensive statements about other white people (ask a white person about "flyover states"). As a rule, white people strongly prefer to get offended on behalf of other people.
It is also valuable to know that white people spend a significant portion of their time preparing for the moment when they will be offended. They read magazines, books, and watch documentaries all in hopes that one day they will encounter a person who will say something offensive. When this happens, they can leap into action with quotes, statistics, and historical examples. Once they have finished lecturing another white person about how it's wrong to use the term "black" instead of "African-American," they can sit back and relax in the knowledge that they have made a difference.
White people also get excited at the opportunity to be offended at things that are sexist and/or homophobic. Both cases offering ample opportunities for lectures, complaints, graduate classes, lengthy discussions and workshops. All of which do an excellent job of raising awareness among white people who hope to change their status from "not racist" to "super not racist."

I like going to 9gag.com, although i know that they steal and watermark other shit; it's just an easy and quickly accessible collection of funny pics.
I liked portal 1 a lot dispite its fan base being shitty as hell. And for some reason I didn't like portal 2 as much (i still liked it) and portal 2's fanbase seems to be not as bad as far as i know.
i like the movie "The blair witch project 2: book of shadows" although a lot of people - even critics - consider it to be one of the worst movies ever.
I enjoy watching big bang theory, how i met your mother and scrubs.
what im wondering, when you say 'i like this despite the horrible fanbase' how do you know you're not one of those horrible fans yourself?
for example i can hardly imagine a person liking big bang theory the 'good' way but maybe im just jaded
i think its down to their attitude and the way they appreciate it in public/on the internet/etc
for example SOAD fans have this stereotype of being 12-16 year old rejects with a sense of humour on par with seth macfarlane. some people may enjoy SOAD but don't want to be affiliated with this crowd. same with big bang theory, the stereotype of that audience is a bunch of people who laugh at everything nerdy in the show simply because it's nerdy. you kind of have a point though, because in the few eps i've seen of BBT that's all it seems to be (nerd references)

I didn't say i don't associate myself with the fanbase of BBT. That was the case for portal 1, and i can safely say that i'm not into those "the cake is a lie" jokes (or space jokes from portal 2). I like BBT, HIMYM and Scrubs and I know that a lot of people dislike the show, that's all.

you can openly dislike something and can criticize anything you want, but i wouldn't actually make fun of people for liking sprite movies or hate on someone for making them. hating on the work is different from hating on the person imo
i dunno, continuing with the (dated) example of sprite toons, i feel pretty comfortable saying alvin earthworm is a talentless hack and his fans are/ were pretty big morons for liking his material. i feel like you can judge someone based on what they like and what they make, as it shows their personal interests and oftentimes their values, which gives you insight on their personality and sense of humor and other things

i'm not sure i follow. am i criticizing the author for attracting that audience? the cartoon for its content and merit? or the fans? either way it's fruitless to me. yeah i spent years making parodies and rapping on all kinds of things , but i didnt do it because i thought i had something to prove to them, i did it because it was funny to me. it was just as big of a waste of time as the stuff i was parodying. at the end of the day they're not going to change their minds about the kind of garbage they like, or at least most of them arent, so what good is saying something like "only fat idiot nerds like this" going to accomplish?
its not going to accomplish much of course but i thought you were implying that there was something wrong with saying it at all w/e

yeah that's where i think the real problem is. there is nothing wrong with liking any music, it's when you're putting a limit on what you can and can't like/going out of your way to like or dislike something, all in order to uphold or maintain a certain reputation or self-image, that you're going too far. that's just being dishonest, and it doesn't do any good for anyone.
but seriously you guys really shouldn't feel bad about, for example, liking an egoraptor cartoon or finding 4chan shit funny. lots of people like that shit. i've laughed at a few things egoraptor has done, i don't care that he's considered a huge loser around this group of people for whatever reason (probably because he makes a lot of cartoons referencing pop culture). i am certainly not a fan, i don't keep up with anything he does and haven't watched something he's done in years, but if you like him you shouldn't feel bad about it.
i don't go to 4chan, and i don't usually find the memes there funny. however, i have found some funny in the past, and usually felt bad about it before. but i really think it was dumb of me to make such a big deal about that kind of stuff before.
he's a huge loser because, well, he's a huge loser. he's an awkward, self centered douche who can only keep a conversation if you're talking about video games. you dont have to feel bad for liking his garbage, but you should be aware that you enjoy garbage. it's bottom of the barrel youtube fodder, he's the dane cook of video game jokes.
makes me want to puke when i see how many people copied his ugly ass art style and shitty screaming humor as well
rip originality and effort I SHALL MISS THEE
while we're on the subject, i also like egoraptor. i like some things he makes much more than other things he makes, but i think overall he's pretty funny/entertaining and i like some of his viewpoints on gamedev.
and we don't talk these days as much as we used to, but from everything i've seen out of him in the time i've known him, he's a decent guy. i remember back when i was like 14 or something he used to live in the town my dad lived in, so i hung out with him a few times. even though i was basically just some socially awkward kid who messaged him every once in a while, he was really cool to me, and the few times we hung out he picked me up, drove me back and pretty much paid for everything. so i always had respect for him and looked up to him like i have with other friends that were much older, more personable and better at shit i wanted to do than me, but still talked to me all these years like rtil, lenko, red, etc. i'd probably be just as socially awkward as i used to be if i hadn't met any of these people.
his fans are pretty ridiculous and obnoxious, but i've come to accept that the majority of people who identify themselves as parts of a "fanbase" of anything are generally retarded. (see: bronies) needless to say people can definitely change for the worse (especially when fame/popularity is involved) and we don't talk enough for me to say i know him really well these days, but to me he acts like the same guy he did a few years ago so as a person he's alright with me.
i'm not saying this to argue or whiteknight, but i did want to give my two cents on the dude since i've been hearing about him a lot over the last couple of weeks and this topic seemed like the most fitting place to put it
egoraptor is my fave jack white lookalike of all time

but i don't enjoy garbage. i don't even remember what the last egoraptor thing i saw was, and i don't find everything he does funny or anything, i just remember not hating him/maybe laughing a few times at something he made. he may be a "loser" in a social context, but that's not really any of my business. i don't anything about the guy.
i didn't even know egoraptor vids were on youtube
i dont care about his personality. in fact i dont care about any creators' personality or background when i listen to/play/watch their shit
also, ego's stuff isnt utter garbage. he has great sense of comedic timing and draws funny drawings and good animation in his more recent stuff. you can tell hes starting to care more about his craft than he used to
while some of his cartoons heavily rely on his formula (screaming, video game injokes) to the point where the cartoon becomes cringeworthy (early awesome series), others tickle my funnybone because of the fast-paced slapstick madness and funny observations (girl-chan and others). hes getting better and i like it
@taylor who said i felt bad?

whenever people make fun of someone for something they enjoy, it always seems to stem back to some sort of insecurities they have as a person. ridicule is a weakness, and i feel sorry for those who feel the need to point out the flaws in everyone else as if they are some authority on what is acceptable and what isnt. there is nothing wrong with or nothing to be ashamed of enjoying what you do so long as it doesnt harm anyone else, and there's nothing more to it
doesn't it seem like you're not exactly practicing what you preach here? i mean telling people who have ever laughed at something egoraptor has done that they "like garbage" seems very condescending, as though you are on authority of what is and what is not garbage. if someone made fun of you for drawing anime influenced art (which happens often from what i can tell), you would react in a defensive way (which you've done a lot), you wouldn't just accept that the other person was correct (why would you?). so why should anyone else in this scenario?
i'm not defending egoraptor, i'm just defending someone's ability to like his work without getting made fun of or talked down to. if you want to describe the objective quality of his work, that's fine. i'm not trying to say that just because people like it, it's good. there is obviously a lot of popular creative media out there that is awful. but you shouldn't just say it's garbage without any sort of back up to what you're saying, and you shouldn't talk down to people who enjoy it regardless.
it sucks cuz people think i'm an opinionated shithead for not liking egoraptor cartoons. seriously, when i was like "meh, i don't like PokeAwesome", on 2 separate occasions people were really pissed off by it. but i guess fuck those people (ie, family and other animation students)

it is my opinion, i dont expect people to accept it as truth but i will say it anyway if i feel like it

i typically ignore people who criticize my work. i know it is bad and that's why i continue to practice, i dont need people to tell me it is bad.

i'm not going to post some deep psychological analysis of a video game parody with non-stop screaming and swear words, it is what it is and it's quite clear what kind of audience its targeted at and that it's low-brow humor.

this weakens your argument. you're comparing the critique of someone's work to the critique of someone's tastes and those two things are both way too different to compare.

GaiaOnline - It's basically grinding virtual gold for pixelated items. But what REALLY keeps me there are the artists they hire to create their assets/characters/whatever. I got exposed to some of my favorite artists, like o_8 (http://oh8.deviantart.com/), Fayren (http://sarahstone.aftertorque.com/)pickpocket (http://fayren.tumblr.com/), and Reapersun (http://reapersun.deviantart.com/), because of Gaia.
Homestuck - I like it, up to the end of Act...5? But I have no idea how to defend why. I like a lot of the characters, but no lie, you DO have to endure a lot of pointless shit to like the better acts. I stopped reading after they introduced even more characters, 'cause all of the transcripts ended up "telling more than showing". I like the music though. And maybe it's 'cause I'm lame, but I like a lot of the (tween-tastic) flash animations, especially the act finales.
Anime - No need to elaborate what others have already said. I like Eyeshield 21 and Gurren Lagann, people somehow think I like all the "mainstream?" stuff.
Shoujo/Josei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josei_manga) Manga - Romance stuffs that makes me feel like a loser for reading mushy girly stuff. Josei manga actually target an older demographic, so the stories are a lot more thought out and tend to be more about realistic romance instead of idealistic romance (like shoujo), but everyone else sees it as "magical girl wants handsome prince d00d" (shoujo).
I don't get how liking anime is a guilty pleasure.
Egoraptor, I do enjoy some of his stuff yes. I wish he'd put out more videos on game analysis. He did a fine job comparing Castlevania 1 and Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (a series of which I'm a major fan, and I can say, without a doubt, I'm part of a "fanbase" if one actually existed). His video about MegaMan and MegaMan X was all right.
I am, however, ashamed to say that I found quite a bit of anime I like by stumbling into the hentai first. -_- Rule 34 at its very finest.

agreed on this, i liked homestuck a lot until somewhere around the end of act 5. the fanbase hurts me more than any other fanbase though honestly. the music is really good and hussie pretty much pioneered this sort of thing but there were a few things that i didnt like so much about the plot
^that, and the man can't tell a story to save his life

1. yeah i mean i guess that it's true. as long as you're aware of it then w/e
2. it's not even necessarily just your opinion if you can back it up
3. even if it's good criticism? like from someone with a lot of experience who is being nice/constructive? or just when they're saying stuff like "it sucks i h8 anime fuk u"
4. i get that, but i dunno. i think it's hard to just say anything is "lowbrow humor" and dismiss it. for example, i really like tim and eric, and i know you do too. but there have been plenty of people who have seen me watch that and think that it's the dumbest thing ever, and i think it's widely considered to be "lowbrow humor". i don't think it necessarily is, i think there is a lot of genius stuff going on in some of their work (though yes, they have sort of delved into more lowbrow stuff before). and pretty much everything the SS ever did was purposefully lowbrow. i dunno, i don't think that makes it less funny automatically.
i'm really not trying to get in an argument about all of this because i don't care about egoraptor or why you do or don't like him, i was just pointing out how quickly you went from "no one should make fun of you for liking what you like, people who do have insecurities" to "you guys like total garbage if you like egoraptor cartoons"
i actually think death note is probably one of the best ideas for an anime ever, and i really wish i'd thought of it

if someone gives me good criticism i more than likely asked for it. i hardly ever hear any valid input on anything i ever make - i don't expect to hear it and i don't ask people to give it to me. but, in the rare event that someone critiques my work for no reason, they're usually right about everything , and this is why i don't ask for critique. because when i make a painting or a cartoon, the second it's done i look at it and i instantly see everything that's wrong with it or what i could have done better.. i'm not the kind of person that thinks everything i make is gold, it's not.
and you're misquoting me, i said "it's ok if you like garbage so long as you're aware that you enjoy garbage". let's not pretend for any sake of argument that making humor of observations as old as the average viewer base of youtube about how sonic gets the rings and mario eats the mushrooms are the pinnacle of comedy. there are some things i like that are garbage, what i mean by garbage is that the humor is cheap, the production is cheap.. something in it is blatantly cheap. do i feel bad for enjoying it? no, not really. do i make fun of/parody the content? yeah, i do, because i think it's funny. hell, i make fun of myself for the things that i like. i do it because i like to do it - that's my shtick (if you haven't had the last 7 or so years to notice). if that bothers you, ignore everything i say and do and stop pretending you care.
the difference between you and me as i can take a look in the mirror and laugh at myself for what a complete joke we
all are. i'm not pretending i'm any better than anyone else, or that i have any taste in anything. but my brand of humor is parody and there's nothing wrong with that.
it would be different if i said, oh you like this? you're this and that, etc. i'm criticizing the content, not the people that enjoy the content. if you're getting offended by the fact that i don't like something you like, well, that's your problem and not mine, and it has nothing to do with what i said earlier and it doesnt make me a hypocrite. people will like what they like regardless of what i do or say, i don't care. if it makes them upset that i parody or jab at the things they like, they need to lighten up.
i know you're very quick to jump to find a way to criticize me and what i do, but you need to take a step back and realize that what i'm doing has very little to do with what i said about ridicule.

it really isn't a personal thing, i don't have a grudge or anything. you just came off boldly on two ideas that seemed to conflict, so i was clarifying what you were saying. it wasn't supposed to be insulting.
