"well if making a new character and sidekick for sonic is gonna make you brats complain we're just gonna give you another sonic to play as ARE YOU HAPPY NOW" - sega spokesperson
it's bizzaro sonic
You guys have no idea how happy this trailer made a lot of old school Sonic fans. >_> Best Sonic teaser trailer ever.
They haven't made a good sonic game since the Dreamcast.
sonic colors is pretty good
I'm excited I like the cartoony-ness I see in both Sonics and it's a good 3d translation they did for the classic sonic.
this makes me legitimately happy
could it be that i'm actually quite hyped for a sonic game for the first time in fuck nknows how long?!?

That is what sonic 4 should have been.
that's a fun fan game, but it's more like sonic 2 HD and not a true sequel
Nope, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmpIkrl-B5M&feature=player_embedded) is Sonic 2 HD. Sonic Fan Remix however, is a project that intends on remixing a bunch of different levels from past Sonic games, not just Sonic 2. Personally, I wish the guy would just make the levels 100% original in design since the art style is unique enough to be entirely new levels.
remaking sonic 2 with slightly better graphics? what a waste of time
yeah seriously, i think i'd prefer to just play the original anyway.

The graphics are a dramatic improvement.
it looks less stylish (the monkey and the bee look like something out of a flash game)
plus, it doesn't really make any difference.
it's not an improvement, it's just vectorizing everything from the pixel art. besides, when you're playing the game you're not going to see the baddies or the playable characters at that size, in fact you'll probably be seeing them at around the same size or smaller than you would back when we played sonic 2 on our tv's. you're not going to notice the little details. that's why from an actual player-size standpoint the graphics only look slightly better.
and for that matter, if that's the only change they're making to the game, i don't see the appeal. part of the charm of sonic 2 is the lush 16-bit graphics. if a game is getting remade, you better add something new to it in terms of gameplay. better graphics don't change the experience.
now it's sonic 2 with shitty vectorized sprites that lose all the charm of the originals.
also, every time sega announces another sonic game people get all excited for his GREAT REVIVAL.
until it comes out and it's "another shitty sonic game, who'da thunk it"
yeah but sonic colors
They do plan on making some major changes including new levels based on some of the scrapped levels, online multiplayer, flying ability for Tails, etc. They're also likely to include a hard mode.
none of that will be worth it if i really have to jump up those platforms (like in that trailer) at full sonic speed WHICH JUST DOESN'T WORK
Quote from: Flashnone of that will be worth it if i really have to jump up those platforms (like in that trailer) at full sonic speed WHICH JUST DOESN'T WORK
Eh. It's not like there aren't any slower sections in the game. That, and it's up to players if they want to spreedrun levels or go at a slower pace. Also, Sonic 2 has a lot of scrapped zones. I know they're definitely planning on bringing Hidden Palace Zone but I wouldn't be surprised if Dust Hill and Wood Zone also made it into the game. There's also Genocide City/Cyber City Zone, Rock Zone, and Winter Zone, but so little is known about those zones that I doubt they'll ever get into the HD remake. Maybe Genocide City has a chance but I would be shocked if it got in.

sonic mechanics don't work in 3D. Also the 2D Sonic mechanics have never been as good as the 2D Mario mechanics and have always been about memorization rather than skill.
heh
ok if they're adding new stuff then that will be cool. there's a lot of scrapped sonic stuff from the 16/32x generation i'd like to see
I don't really understand the purpose of fans remaking games in general. Unless your doing it for some weird college project or something, it really doesn't seem work it to me. If you want to take a game you really liked and improve on it in various ways, that I can get, but eh, whatever

In other news, the PC version has been confirmed and the specs are really demanding. If you pre-order it, it's only $25 but $30 for its standard price is also very reasonable for a brand new PC game. Pretty sweet deal overall.

pretty standard spec requirements for a next gen game. i'll definitely get it if the reviews are good
that gameplay footage actually looks really neat
betcha it will be fucked up one way or another
anyone actually looking forward to a sonic game in this day and age deserves to have the DVD fly out when the case is opened and surgically slice out their eyeballs with a razor sharp edge and pour in a vial of sulphuric acid then release a swarm of cockroaches, blowflies and beetles to nest in the burnt gaping holes and lay eggs that gradually fill their veins and organs with countless squirming bloodsucking larvae that feed on their vital fluids and reanimate the corpse into a shambling insectoid abomination that roams the earth seeking the flesh of the living until their body fully decomposes and crumbles to dust OR until they realize sonic had his day back in the 90s and will NEVER ever return to form in a billion eons
but i have to admit that gameplay video does look pretty nifty and i might just grab a PC copy
looks actually good

i still feel like this though. i also want a sa3
I honestly don't understand why they just don't make SA3. It's one of those games that people obviously want yet sega seems to be ignoring the idea. Unless there's some weird legal reason...
Another example of this is Star Wars: Battlefront 3. People have been asking for it forever, and if you go to most star wars games youtube videos, top rated comments are people saying that they'd rather have Battlefront 3 instead. Although what's worse about that is the fact that they started then cancelled it...
i think it's mostly because nostalgia isn't usually enough to bring a series back. nintendo is one of the only companies that manages to run off of that, though. it's the reason why both mml3 and battlefront 3 were cancelled. they thought it would flop and tbh they were probably both right.
there are tons of sequels i want made but will never happen because they wouldn't make enough money to justify it being developed.
edit: grammar

have you played sonic adventure, sonic adventure 2, sonic unleashed (sonic levels) or sonic colors? those are all excellent 3d sonic games from this last decade (although sonic adventure came out late 1999). bringing sonic back to pure 2d isn't the only way he can "return to form". sonic works just as well in 3d as mario or any other 2d platform did, it just has to be done right. imo it's a lot harder to do it with sonic because the game involves speed. but it's been done right and sonic team just needs to get their shit together.
the promising thing about this game is they're showing actual gameplay footage and not a pre-rendered cutscene like they did with all the bad sonic games (most notably sonic the hedgehog from 2006 for xbox 360).
Probably
I just played a demo of Sonic Adventure DX for PC once and it stank

And then Dreamcast bit the dust! Honestly I'd get this game, the last major sonic game I played was SA2, great gameplay, especially those damn chaos (raising those little monsters was addicting and fun). I'm kinda eeehh, about it being released on the 3DS. Don't get me wrong, I want it be there, maybe it'll help Nintendo get more sales on those devices (I'm still holding onto my DSi). I just hope they don't ruin that port with some shitty gimmick with 3D. Sonic could have a good home there.
And isn't that what we all want? A good home?
~ Zenny
the 3ds port is actually looking surprisingly good so far and supposedly plays well coming from people who have tried it at gameshows or whatever. also the 3d in any game would never be game ruining, considering the majority of 3ds owners prefer to play with it turned off anyway. although if i do get this game it'll be on the ps3, just because i only like playing sonic games with a controller.

in the us, yea pretty much. but it's still very popular in japan, and regardless of its short stunt in the US, it was still an amazing console where a lot of amazing games started.
All of the ports of Sonic Adventure have been bad ports. The latest PC version is a port of the XBLA/PSN version, which was a bad port of the PC version from 2003, which was a bad port of the GCN version, which was a bad port of the Dreamcast version. Sega is usually pretty shitty about ports unless the games are 2D. Kind of surprising the GCN port of SA2 ended up being such a strong port that was an improvement over the original version. Sonic Adventure DX has its advantages as well, but it's generally considered inferior to the Dreamcast version.
the 3ds port looks pretty good, i guess. the 3ds is in a bad way and could use some good games
and sonic adventure pretty much made my childhood, then I played it again many years later and it was a traumatizing experience

I think I recall the reason as to why the system was unplugged. I think the newest CEO or president of the SEGA at the time wanted to focus mainly on software. Which is a shame, because it did have an amazing library for the time. Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio, Street Fighter 3 and the original console MMO, Phantasy Star Online. Who knows, Sonic could be around for a series of great titles. Colors was definitely fun.
@ stusader
Is that so? That's good news then.
yes, they did say that they were never gonna make another console after the dreamcast, which i think is a real shame. but ya, one of my friends lived in tokyo for a few years and he found a couple of stores that specialized in sega and dreamcast games and repair, and there were lots of popular homebrew dreamcast games.
what are you niggers talking about
SEGA bought exclusive rights to some fancy pants high-tech 3D graphics crap for use in arcade machines a while back, it's not entirely unlikely that it could also be applied in the development of a new console, especially considering that they won't let anyone else use it and nobody actually gives a shit about arcades, my cousin was all over that shit a while ago and talking about how great it would be to see a dreamcast 2.0
however considering how long they have been out of the game, i am personally convinced that any new SEGA consoles will be marred by the same shitty motion gimmicks and eye-obliterating 3D effects they're trying to implement with every fucking console to squeeze out a little extra money from backwards retarded consumers so even if they do unfist their own assholes it will probably be a god-damned mess RIP

I just read that with Randy Savage's voice in my head, it was the most entertaining thing I've read all night, thanks.
well in japan arcades are still very popular and that's why sega is still a very successful hardware developer there. but yes, outside of japan, arcades are unfortunately becoming a thing of the past. but i do remember sega saying they would never make another console again after the dreamcast.
but if there ever was a new sega console, i think they would be an innovator instead of a follower. sega was always ahead of its time in the console world - i mean look at the dreamcast. first 128 bit console, first online gaming console, tons of never-before-seen peripherals, the VMU.. nobody was doing that kind of stuff before sega.
yeah but WHEN did they say they wouldn't make another console
minds change, and more importantly, executives and employees do
there's tons of ol' sega fanboys lurking about just pullin their dicks
endlessly waiting for a piece of fresh ass to jump on and devastate
it was quite a while ago
but this is the longest sega has ever gone not making a console
i think it's safe to say they'll never get back into the console business
the sega 32x needs more games... i've been waiting 14 years for a new game, and nothing!
maybe i put my birthday money in the wrong place =(
Sega isn't going to go back to the console business. I think their only console that was a major success world wide was the Genesis and back then they only had to compete with Nintendo. Later on, it was difficult enough for them to compete with Sony and Nintendo, but now they would also have to compete with Microsoft. It would be a failure and they know it. Not to mention how much they benefit by releasing their games multiplatform and how their games outside of Sonic and Platinum Games titles generally don't sell that fantastic. Sega has also made a truckload of money off of the Mario & Sonic sports games and they can't make games like that without being a 3rd party. As for Sonic Adventure 3, it's very possible it'll never get and that might not be a bad thing. Look how disappointing Sonic 4 Episode 1 turned out. Trying to create a faithful successor to an old game is very difficult and the Adventure games were a mixed bag. Some of the gameplay was fantastic in those games while some of it was just... Very flawed. It's probably best they just keep trying to improve the Unleashed/Colors/Generations formula for now unless it gets stale.
but nobody truly loves sony or microsoft unless they're fucking gay and nintendo just overloads their junk with crappy gimmicks
the ps3 is starting to get more popular now. but the thing i always found interesting about sony is they don't have a mascot. with nintendo you have mario, with sega you have sonic.. sony doesn't really have any time-tested franchise to stand behind. for a while i guess it could have been crash bandicoot, but even that's hard to argue
it used to pretty much be crash and spyro with the PS1 but they sorta fell out of relevance when the later games were kind of below the expected standards
they have... um...
that vice president douche?
wow... they really outmarket themselves with shooting titles so much that they forget to have something to remember them by... =(
Naughty Dog, Insomniac and their associated IPs are kinda like Sony's mascots in my book
Not that I give a damn about their PS3 stuff
Games by Naughty Dog and IG are pretty much their mascots. Nathan Drake could probably be considered the PS3's main mascot since the R&C games aren't promoted like they used to be.
Edit-
Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are going to be console manufacturers for at least another generation or two. It's just too hard for Sega to compete and they would probably make more money as a third party.
You never know... Apple may end up releasing a home console to play your ANGRY BIRDS on a a 58-inch plasma TV. High Definition avians!

What the hell could that game possibly be about? I mean, really. If wanted to play a game as a gay ninja, I'd pick up any one of the 50 Naruto games there are and play as sauce-gay.
On topic: Sonic's first adventure into "3D" was Sonic 3D Blast. That game was probably one of my all time childhood favorites. Many could argue that the game was just isometric not true 3D, but meh, it was kickass for 1996. My only gripe is that the bonus stages were waaaay too easy. You could practically have all the chaos emeralds by act 2 of the second stage. The music was amazing too, both for the Genesis and Sega Saturn. Here's an example:
Sonic 3D Music: Gene Gadget Zone Act 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuWXGH3UBbM#)
Sonic 3D (Saturn) Music: Gene Gadget Zone Act 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z2Q8maJTOo#)
It was actually pretty clever of Sonic Team to make the soundtracks different from each other. Obviously, the Saturn benefited from using CD technology, so overall, better sounding music. Also, the stages were quite different from the two ports. With the Genesis having a less colorful and natural looking environment:

While the Saturn had lush areas for Sonic to run around in, with increased textures:

Sonic 3D Blast is an underrated classic and the PC version is the first Sonic game I ever owned. I love the game.
people like 3d blast?
even mark from CGR didn't, and he's a fan of cosmic carnage for the 32x.

What? ._. 3D Blast was released for the original Genesis and Sega Saturn, not that shitty hardware nightmare known as the 32X. To best of my knowledge at least.
zenny quit missing the point. the system is immaterial to the discussion. -_-

uh not really? its more me trying to say "i personally disagree" in a slightly humorous manner without actively seeking an argument or being maliciously confrontational, as i respect your opinion and understand what youre saying but i just personally hold a different opinion. do you really want me to explain myself? i dont think something like this is worth debating really, and i dont care that much about the subject matter at all but i mean if youre really looking to be confrontational about it, i guess i could deliver a few paragraphs about why i think super mario 64 was a better translation of a 2d series into 3d than sonic adventure, so you could tell me how wrong i am. idk

the new spyro game only has his name on it and that's about it
why does "perfect chaos" look like the ported textures from SA1?
Personally, I don't feel Sonic is as good in 3D as he is in 2D, but Sonic in 3D can still be extremely fun. My favorite 2D Sonic game, which is also my favorite game of all time, is Sonic 3 & Knuckles. No matter how well Sega can pull off Sonic in 3D, I don't think anything they can create will ever be able to top that game. The game has excellent physics, outstanding level design, simple but addictive gameplay, tons of multiple paths, three different characters to play as that have different routes, etc. Not to mention S3&K's levels were fucking huge (http://www.soniczone0.com/games/sonic3/downloads/s3-cnz-act1map.png). Despite how many times I play the game, there are certain locations and secrets I still have never found on my own. Another thing worth mentioning that the main three people in charge of that game no longer works at Sega. While Yuji Naka did a fantastic job programming the 2D Sonic games, S3&K was the last Sonic game he ever programmed and Nights into Dreams was the last game he ever programmed. S3&K released in 1994 and NiD released in 1996. From Sonic Adventure to Shadow the Hedgehog, his sole job was simply to be the producer and he proved to be a much worse producer overtime than he was a programmer. Hirokazu Yasuhara, the guy who was responsible for the excellent level design in the 2D Sonic games, has not worked on a single Sonic game since Sonic R and his view of that game wasn't very high.
"I was opposed to [Sega's] decision to create games that use 'Sonic-something' so that they can sell it easily. I wanted to make good games, not any games that used the Sonic character in a haphazard way." -Yasuhara on his work on the Traveller's Tales-developed Sonic titles
He later quit Sega to work for Naughty Dog but left that company after Uncharted was completed because he wanted to work on character games. He later joined Namco-Bandai America in 2008 to work on a Pacman game, but nothing has been announced since then. It should also be noted he worked on Sonic X-treme. Wikipedia claims he was the head designer but judging from interviews, I dunno if he had a massive role in the game's creation. Some of his concept art for the game is pretty cool though and the plot he wrote took part in writing for the game is surprisingly similar to Sonic Colors' plot.

QuoteNo less than seven other storylines were created over the project's lifespan, the final one authored by Hirokazu Yasuhara and Richard Wheeler. In this version, Dr. Eggman returns with a Death Egg that is larger than planet Earth, its gravity causing other planets to fall into an orbit with the space station. Miles "Tails" Prower teleports Sonic to the Death Egg in the hopes of stopping Eggman's latest scheme, but the beam is intercepted by one of the planets now in orbit. Finding himself on a strange world, Sonic also discovers that the badniks Eggman are using are powered by an alien species called "Mips," the natives to the planets that have become a part of the Death Egg's defenses.
Speaking of Sonic X-treme, one of the reasons why a lot of people tend to bash the hell out of Sonic 3D Blast is because they were hoping for a major 3D Sonic game. Instead, we ended up getting an enhanced version of a Genesis game as opposed to something that truly took advantage of Sega's Saturn hardware. A lot of people have mixed opinions about Sonic X-treme, but I think it would have kicked ass.

As for the third guy, Naoto Ōshima was responsible for the art direction in the Genesis games and Nights into Dreams along with the creation of the characters Sonic and Dr. Robotnik. While he had some role in Sonic Adventure, Kazuyuki Hoshino took over as the art director which explains the very different art direction and changes to Sonic's universe. Kazuyuki continued being the main series art director with Shadow the Hedgehog being the last major Sonic game he worked on. Since then, they have been going through multiple art directors which is why the art direction in Sonic '06, Sonic Unleashed, the storybook games, and Sonic Colors are all so different. As for what Yuji Naka and Naoto Ōshima do now, Yuji Naka founded some company called Prope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prope) and Naoto Ōshima founded Artoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artoon) which is probably most well known for Blinx: The Time Sweeper (lol remember that game?) and Yoshi's Island DS. Both companies mostly make games that usually get either a poor or mediocre reception. I do want to play Prope's games Ivy the Kiwi? and Rodea the Sky Soldier though.

it isnt about who has the better games. my point was that any 2D series can be translated into 3D if done properly, it just needs to be done right. i've never even played super mario 64
sonic xtreme looks like it has the same gameplay as sonic adventure eventually had but with more confusing level design and colors

That was a good read. I didn't know much about Sonic's history in development, and HOLY shit, look at the size of that level.
The only thing I really dislike about S3&K was the ten minute time limit. The levels were so much larger in S3&K that getting through an act in under ten minutes could be a bit difficult if you want to explore the multiple paths. For comparison on the level sizes, what I previously linked was Act 1 of Carnival Night Zone which was the fourth zone in the game. The fourth zone in Sonic 2 was Casino Night Zone.

WHATEVER bomberman is a better game anyway
i like mischief makers better. way better.
So the game came out last week and I think it's the best Sonic game released since the mid '90s. Really great game and the PC version turned out to a pretty solid port that's actually far better than the console version. Not only does it look much nicer, but it runs at 60 frames per second where as the console version runs at 30 frames per second. It's amazing what a huge difference that makes. A lot of people who played both the console version and PC version claim the PC version's controls are more responsible because of the higher framerate. Not to mention a lot of reviews bitched about the framerate for the console version.

would it kill video game controls to take the goddamned trash out more often
Ive been playing this and the game is so good! Both sonics play great and the levels are complex and you can explore. I love classic sonic and the fact he's mute and cant do anything but spin and jump and they didnt try to add on things to him...and the levels are so lush I want to look at them and hear the sounds of the environments, its all very fun
all i heard was that it was a glitchy piece of shit
