Why? It's a good topic starter for equal ones if you're bad at starting conversations and would like to get to know people with the same interests as you. Not this shirt in particular but generally, wearing a memeshirt is nothing but a silently hinted "hi, I'm from the internet", only understood by people who are fond of it as well.

As for the haters, it's pretty much a declination of a certain fascination for the relative issue that they definitely have for even knowing enough about it to think they should have a certain hate against it. (I'm not saying that hate generally is a kind of reversed fascination but in this case it most likely is. One should keep in mind that it is something neutral that doesn't even conflict with anyones interests or opinions in any way.)
They doom it because they want to avoid any unnecessary contact with these kinds of things to prove others, sometimes even themselves that they are totally not part of this fandom and don't belong to either the mindless masses or the deviant weirdos.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that if a hater would actually meet someone wearing a shirt like this, he or she will probably even feel a touch of sympathy and recognition, although mixed with a certain attitude of declining despise. The rest would depend on the character and the behaviour, mainly the first impression apart form the shirt that the person has on you but most likely it will have a positive impact one you.

^Replace the keyword with the relative fad and you got a rule of thumb. It's an unproven fact. Yeye, oxymoron... I like metaphors, ok?

it's less about being "a hater" and more about a corporate entity taking a joke from the internet everyone could enjoy, turning it into merchandise, and making millions off of it by people they used to sell foamy dvd's to

Kött

Well, if you're clever you make yourself a custom one on cafepress anyway. It's not like this site/shop is a monopoly and there have always been people, trying to make money by using the ideas of others or the goods belonging to everyone. Communism only works on the internet itself.

internet memes belong on the internet. taking an already stupid overused joke and wearing it on a t-shirt in the real world, does nothing but make you look profoundly annoying

edit: J can't handle the pressure of that huge burn I laid on him so I'm just gonna edit it out to save him the hardcore embarrassment.
