Yes, it is pretty cool... Because these guys are playing actual instruments! And I will never understand why people spend their time, mashing in a couple of plastic buttons to get the high score at Through the Fire and Flames instead of just learning to play actual instruments to play the classical rl rockband. Compared to being able to handle a piece of plastic that actually is something you can write in an application or impress and entertain people with.

it is a videogame designed to be silly and fun and make you feel cool

ok, that's a good pro... Still, for the money people invest in this game plus controlers, you can easily get a decent guitar if you got the basic interest...

ye... video games... where you can be harder, better, faster, stronger than everyone else and be a superhero in your virtual world...
It's true, we all do it and we all enjoy it but the difference is that you can't just grab a gun in real life and play war or shoot some undead rotting corpses and monsters, getting hit by a thousand bullets without dying, or experience an adventure in ancient times.
In the case of the game guitar hero or rockband people deal with something that they could actually accomplish but the fact that it is just a game they are playing makes the entire issue seem so abstract that most people don't even think of trying it with actual instruments as it is 'just another videogame to have fun with' after which you can continue with your normal life activities.
The typical rockstar feeling may be a pro argument but believe me, I've seen quite a lot of guys looking happier than any King of Rock after learning how to play smoke on the water in a semi decent way as their first actual musical accomplishment in life, giving them a feeling that no game achievement could ever replace. And I can tell that because I know this feeling myself.
