Since the flap on her helmet is on the right side, would that make her a left-handed hitter?

If so, I think that's a fun angle to write into the story, making her different playing wise from the rest of the team

nice catch. she is indeed a left-handed hitter. the advantage comes from classic defensive positioning. with no one between 1st and 2nd, a LH hitter has an easier time hitting a base hit into the gap, whereas a RH hitter will often be stopped by the shortstop. but a trend in baseball becoming more popular is the infield shift, where the infield defensive positions shift 1/2 a base to their left, moving the SS position to between 1st and 2nd base - effectively taking away the advantage from lefties.

it does have drawbacks though - more stolen bases, harder to pull double plays, left field is barely covered - but now the LH hitter can no longer easily hit a ball into the gap into right center. the shift has been around for a long time but it's becoming more popular now because scouting reports are so advanced that defensive coaches will have a plan for almost every hitter on the opposing team. you can "beat" the shift but obviously it's not as easy for lefties.

in the story there is a pitcher from her old island home city who recognizes her (much to her dismay) and i'd like for his team to bring out the shift for her when they come to play her team.
