Atheism is nothing more than the absence of a belief in any gods (occasionally, specifically the disbelief in particular gods). A religion is composed of doctrines, rules, customs, morals, texts, traditions, holidays, myths, some sort of belief in (and usually worship for) something divine or supernatural. The term atheism has nothing to do with any of those things. To suggest that atheism is a religion is really just nonsense. What would that even mean? Let's live our lives based on the things that god didn't say, because he isn't real? At best a person's atheism has an indirect influence on their morality. For example, something like "It's okay to work on Sunday because it's just like any other day of the week and it doesn't matter that a commandment says I shalt not because that god doesn't exist." The conclusion "it is okay to work on Sunday" doesn't come from "I do not believe in god." Sunday is okay by default. For that matter, saying "atheism is a religion" is like saying "monotheism is a religion." It isn't. It's a very specific and individual beleif about god(s). However, a religion can be atheistic if it has no gods.

Neverminding the semantics, I think you'd find that the overwhelming majority of people that describe themselves as athiests generally mean that they are likewise a-religious and have no beliefs in anything supernatural at all.

I don't see why we feel the need to know things like this. Maybe it just doesn't appeal to me, but why do we have to analyze everything? Everyone has their own ideals and aesthetics about beauty and such but why do we feel the need to challenge and assert these ideas against others? Why can't we just go with the flow, you know?

personally i think the world would be better off without religion, and i care about the future of the world and mankind. and if i ever had kids (yeah right) i'd want them to live in a world where they didn't have to deal with religion trying to encroach on their freedoms while demanding respect from the modern world for their stone age beliefs and backwards practices.

i suggest you go to the other thread but i\\\'m an atheist and i don\\\'t believe in the supernatural but according to the definition of religion that i\\\'m aware of that is popular among most philosophers, atheism just fits the category of religion because the definition doesn\\\'t entail any belief in the supernatural or higher powers, just the fact that you have some views that make up the way you view the world
