Animations from my interactive media class

Okay so heres the breakdown. Our teacher explained flash to the class and told everyone to create a Flash animation without using sound. The other challenge was that one of the characters had to be nervous, another calm, and another have something unfortunate happen to it. Now I understand that a lot of these people it was their first time using flash, but some of them had experience with it and many of them the subject material was god awful and laughable. Of course some of these individuals are interactive media majors and not animation majors so that also works against a few people. In anycase Ive divided the flash animations up for you based on their quality according to me:

THE GOOD

To. Steal.   ---I enjoyed this one. The use of

text I thought was creative enough and the trees look pretty damn nice. Plus they get less visible as they go back a nice touch.


789  ---This was a nice flash as well. It dealt with the timeless

joke in a cute and comical way. While the quality of the symbols isnt necessarily great, the narrative and a lot of the humor make up for it.



THE BAD

The Dead Presidents Band  --- Welp someone in my class

tried to use the bone tool and made the presidents move in an incredibly gay fashion. Also its hard to understand whats going on. We werent allowed to use sound and it seemed like this person had no regard for this while making her flash. Not very high quality symbols either.

Three Men on a Beach  --- This ones pretty obviously

bad. The symbol quality is horrible and the narrative is difficult to follow. Why is there a man looking on the beach frantically? What the fuck is with the house at the end? Why is the water not moving? I will say though that some parts had some decent easing effects.

Unfortune Aliens  -- This one is just fucking awful but still

cant compare to some of the others. And while we were criticing the guy just starts going into what inspired him out of nowhere without anyone asking...like we wanted to know what inspired this (BTW it was American Dad). The graphics are kinda bad and the worm is animated really stiffly for a worm. Also the alien seems quite happy he's being devoured. It's really fucking short too. Just awful. But at least the narrative makes sense of course this is partially due to the authors INCREDIBLY CREATIVE AND THOUGHTFUL use of speaking bubbles.

Raffles  --- Okay cool! Its two really poorly drawn dogs moving

with vacant expressions strolling through the park with clouds that are turbo boosting past them! Okay this is pretty god fucking awful and I cant make sense of a lot of it. I gather that the brown dog has flees and the grey one helps him, but what the hell is going on? Why can the grey dog break his damn neck by doing a complete 180 turn to see the orange dog? What the hell is going on with the period and the grey dog stomping on it? Was he thinking about the flea and crushed the imaginary thought bubble flea and the brown dog was able to see it somehow? it was just really poorly and confusingly executed. And what the fuck is that a thumbs up jutting from out of the brown dogs back!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS WHY ARE YOU GOING TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT RESEMBLES REALITY AND BREAK ALL PHYSICAL POSSIBILITIES WHEN THEY DONT MAKE SENSE TO BREAK THEM? Oh thats right because you wear a naruto headband to class everyday and are lazy. The worst part about all of this is, she owns and used a tablet for this part. Still the worst has not yet come.

Obamacare  --- Oh boy if Rtil was watching this one Im sure

he'd have a field day! Anyway this is what happens when someone who doesn't know how to use flash and doesn't know anything about politics does politics! Bad graphics all around but they arent as atrocious as some of the recent ones Ive linked. Actually the quality of this one isn't god awful and at least you can tell whats going on in the narrative. Sure they look like paper cutouts some 1st grader did and sure they tween around like robots or zombies but its still not all that bad. Until you get the the head falling on the ground...holy shit holy shit holy shit what is wrong with that floaty, jerky head my god that doesnt look right. A sign cutting off someones head is about as believable as the message behind this flash. HELTHCAR WLL FIX EVRETHNG XCPT STUPIDTY OBMA 420 420 360 LGLIZ IT BRO HPE END TH WAR NO BLUD 4 OIL SOCILZE MEDICNE OLD PEPLE HOMLEZZ WELFARE PROGRMS! A bad flash but not a terrible one.



THE UGLY (This stuff is about as bad as the Deviant Art Thread)

WENCH  --- Holy shit I could not stop laughing at this one in

class. I was trying to be quiet as best as I could but god damn look at this! The most obnoxious sounds in the world (that we werent supposed to use), cut out jpeg background, poorly drawn everything, obviously anime inspired, the background to the site, the retarded smile the guy has on his face after he's saved, the gradients, and the groan inducing pun at the very end. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SUCKS SO BAD I was l;oosing it I couldnt hold back my laughter in class anymore. Wind just kept escaping my mouth and I made these little "kkksks" or "eeeeee" noises. Some people looked at me strangely. The worst part (yes there is a worse part) is was when the guy was describing it. He was going on and on about him being inspired to create a manga that could be sexy but not sexist acting like he accomplished some noble goal. He said he wanted to create every guys idea of the perfect woman. GOOD JOB ON THE WHOLE SEXIST THING BY GICIN HER RAGING KNOCKERS, USING SEXUAL INNUENDO ONE-LINERS, AND GIVIN HER BIG OL CHILD BIRTHING HIPS. This was obviously just some wet dream that the author wanted to put down on some form of media one way or another. But see shes a girl and shes fighting so that means its not sexist. Big Heaving Breasts and DSL's cant be sexist when a girl beats shit up. Except that the audience still views her as "WOW LOOK AT THIS THING WITH HUGE BOOBS OH SHE'S FIGHTING SHT 2 WOWIE!" She isn't even a person, shes just a pair of tits that beats shit up and says shitty one liners! WOW GOOD GOING! And then some girl in our class for whatever reason asked him "R U GOIN 2 CUNTINU THZ?" to which he responded (of course) "Well yes Ive had this idea for a manga for a very long time Id like to do something constructive while I beat off"  Sorry bout the text wall but holy shit!

BEES!  --- LUL so RANDUM AN TEH FUNNY!!11 Okay so this one

can't even compete with the last one on horribleness, but this is still horrible. I think its pretty obvious to you all why. But yes we seem to have a furry in our class. At least he animated the tail alrite. That being said the animation is better than most of the other shit here...but that's not saying much. I mean this animation is pretty bad too. WATCH AND BE AMAZED AS MY WHOLE BODY SPASMS AND JERKS ALL OVER THE PLACE WHILE A WALK THROUGH THE STAIRS. Why are the stairs even there? Apearently you can walk right through them. And this flash is so short...which actually might work in its favor since its so fucking unfunny and inconsistently animated. BEES LUL AND THAT IS THE JOKE! Give me a break you weeaboo shthead. On a sidenote, he says anime is his biggest influence. What a surprise!

What is this I dont even  --- The whole time I was watching

this, I was thinking just that. "what IS this?" I had to remind myself that I was in college...these products were the direct result of COLLEGE STUDENTS. Again I was trying to hold back my laughter and it didnt work for long. Theres so much wrong with this that Id run out of room describing all of them. Ill give a short list
-The graphics
-The flatness
-The movements
-The timing
-The speech and thought bubbles
-The suitcase jerkin its way down to the floor and pushing the fat guy back somehow
-The narrative. HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING TO FAIL ON SILENT NARRATIVE WHEN YOU HAVE SPEECH AND THOUGHT BUBBLES!? Please dont hurt me what THE HELL!!!@#@#
-The Length
-Everything

There is not one redeeming quality about this one. The icing on the cake is how defensive he became of this...saying things like "I meant that to happen it was intentional" and when someone brought up a friendly point of criticizim hed always go "What what are you talking about? This is how its supposed to work" in the most assanine way he could possibly say it. He's such a shithead the worst of the whole bunch. He's even worse than all the turbonerds in my class...at least theyre capable of being nice.

Thats pretty much it! I couldnt say any of this stuff in class because I didnt want to be an asshole but holy shit was I thinking it. I gave some constructive criticism which no one wanted to hear and I tried to follow up with some positive. For the last cartoon...I couldnt think of a single thing positive with it...and neither could the class. They all just sat there...waiting for someone to think of something. Finally someone did...but it wasn't a positive comment.

Starogre was doing one too but he couldnt finish cause he was in San Fran at the Indie Game Developers Conference. But Ill upload his when its finished. He showed me the intro of it and needless to say its heaps better than everyone else's. Even though this thread might not be a prime example, the head of the Animation Department is really knowledgeable...its just a lot of the students are weeaboo turbo fags. Ive been learning quite a bit from the head of the department as he teaches the intro to animation class.

UMBC is a top school and its cheap. Our college got top up and coming college award among a bunch of other ones. The workload here is rough but its a serious school. Mostly the schools known for Science and mathematics though. But their art department is still pretty nice. Itll probably get more and more attention to come.

some of the animation in yours was really really good i think. the only problem was the walking sequence of the long legged purple guy was kinda stiff. i think if you had made him bounce a little bit/exaggerate his motions more you might have gotten a better "creepin around" effect

other than that it was really cool though i honestly didnt have a clue what happened otehr than he had a map and it was destroyed somehow

and recently in my creative writing class i've been surprised at just how bad my fellow seniors are at writing. we had to write a short story and almost all of them were nearly unbearable to read. they all sounded like they were written by some fuckin middle school kid and they had the same generic story developments/characters. mine was a really vague philosophy based story that was meant to be confusing (though it did have a point), and it wasnt the greatest literary achievement ever but at least it wasnt SHE WAS A GIRL WHO PLAYED VOLLEYBALL BUT SHE TORE HER ACL OH NO!!!! This was the exact same thing that happened in my class with these bozoes. Nobody said anything constructive except for me and when the class had no other choice with the very last flash. It was incredible how long the silence continued after that guy showed the flash with absolutely no redeeming qualities. Everyone sat there for like a full 3 minutes silent...including the professor. And then finally someone stepped up and said "The movement of the characters could be a little better". There was seriously nothing positive about his flash and no one could think of anything
